American saxophonist HANK CRAWFORD has died, aged 74.
Crawford, a leading jazz saxophonist and songwriter, died on Thursday (29Jan09) at his home in Memphis, Tennessee due to complications caused by a stroke he suffered in 2000.
Serving as music director for late R&B singer Ray Charles’ big band in the early 1960s, Crawford also recorded tracks of his own through the 1970s, including blues hits The Peeper, New York’s One Soulful City, and I Hear a Symphony.
He played baritone on several of Charles’ records, including Ray Charles at Newpost and What’d I Say.
Crawford also worked as an arranger and sideman for artists including Eric Clapton, Etta James and B.B. King.
A widower whose first marriage ended in divorce, Crawford is survived by his sister, Delores Crawford, two brothers, Danny and Ceylon, three sisters, Shirley, Marva and Alma, a son, Michael, a daughter, Sherri, and a granddaughter.
