Hollywood actor TOM CRUISE is determined to be a great dad - to make up for the difficult relationship he had with his own father.
The Jerry Maguire star has two adopted children - Isabella, 16, and Connor, 13 - from his marriage to Nicole Kidman, and daughter Suri with his wife Katie Holmes.
And he admits he is very much a hands-on parent after being brought up without a father figure from the age of 12, when his dad Thomas Cruise Mapother III split from his mother Mary.
He says, "I’m a great parent. I want to be with my kids, and they get to do all the stuff that I wanted to do when I was growing up. My own father wasn’t there much for me and I want to be a different dad to my kids. My family is the most important thing in my life." Cruise also reveals he was determined not to let his divorce from Kidman affect his relationship with their adopted children.
He adds, "Nic and I are very committed and successful in sharing the parenting."

HARRY POTTER star EMMA WATSON has hinted she may quit acting after she takes time out to attend university.
Watson previously announced her desire to continue her education and has even applied to a number of colleges, both in the U.K. and America, to start her studies next year (09).
And now the 18-year-old has admitted she is "uncertain" she will return to the big screen after her break.
She says, "It’s weird, because I’ve always felt uncertain that acting is what I wanted to do. Just because this has happened to me doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right thing."

BRITNEY SPEARS is determined to stick to her New Year resolution - she wants to quit chewing her fingernails in 2009.
The Womanizer superstar hates biting her nails, and longs for manicured and attractive hands.
But the singer insists there is a valid reason her dirty habit - she can’t stop worrying.
She says, "Next year, I have to learn to stop biting my nails! I would like to stop worrying so much, because I worry all the time. And to learn how to be happier, just in general. I have to learn to take things not so seriously." But Spears doesn’t hold out much hope of sticking to her 2009 promise because she’s never kept a resolution yet.
She adds, "I end up breaking them. It’s hard."

MARIAH CAREY’s decision to call her album E=MC2 doesn’t add up - leading mathematicians insist she "misread" the meaning behind ALBERT EINSTEIN’s famous formula.
The Hero hitmaker used Einstein’s mass-energy equivalence sum as the title of her 2008 LP.
In interviews to promote the record, the singer’s eleventh studio release, Carey told reporters she re-interpreted the equation to stand for "emancipation equals Mariah Carey times two".
But Dr David Leslie, lecturer in Statistics Department of Mathematics at Britain’s Bristol University, has slammed the star’s choice of title insisting Carey didn’t properly research the meaning of the equation before using it.
He tells the BBC, "(Carey has) misread the algebra. The ‘two’ in the equation means C squared, not MC multiplied by two. The correct reading of the equation is E=MCC, so perhaps Mariah’s re-interpretation should have been ‘Emancipation equals Mariah Carey Carey’?"

TOM CRUISE is loving marriage to KATIE HOLMES - admitting he feels "lucky" to have the actress as his wife.
The pair wed in Bracciano, Italy in November 2006 following a whirlwind romance, and have a two year old daughter, Suri.
And Cruise is happier than ever with the Batman Begins star - admitting she brings out his romantic side.
He tells British newspaper The Sun, "Married life is very good, very lovely.
I feel lucky to have Kate as my wife. She’s an extraordinary woman. She is funny and smart and she likes the same things that I do.
"She’s a very strong, gracious woman, and a great comedian. I like doing romantic things, such as bringing flowers and surprising her with things. I love candlelit evenings with nice music."

KATE WINSLET spied on elderly people from the corner of cafes to prepare for her role as a weary pensioner in new movie THE READER.
The British actress underwent a complete transformation in the make-up chair as her character, a former Nazi concentration camp guard, ages 30 years on screen.
And the star ensured her body language was realistic by going incognito in cafes to watch the elderly.
She says, "I observed older people. I would watch them in cafes to see how they would stand up.
"I didn’t mind looking in the mirror and seeing myself as an old hag! It gave extra dimension to the character. The make-up was very difficult to wear and really uncomfortable.
"It was on the teeth, eyeballs, hands, feet and body. And it took seven-and-a-half hours to put on."

Supermodel KATE MOSS was left red-faced over the holidays when she reportedly misplaced a ring - three hours after her rocker boyfriend JAMIE HINCE gave it to her.
The Kills guitarist Hince was said to be furious after Moss lost the $4,400 (£3,000) tribal piece he had custom-made for her while recently touring the U.S.
And Moss was so desperate to find the jewellery the pair nearly missed their flight to Thailand, where they plan to celebrate the New Year.
A source tells Britain’s Daily Mirror, "There was a terrible panic when Kate realised the ring had disappeared. Jamie’d had it specially made for her in Santa Fe. It was a Native American ring designed to symbolise Kate’s happy future and Jamie’s role in it.
"It was solid silver with a gorgeous blue stone, and was supposed to have all sorts of protective powers. But Kate forgot to put it back in its box… Jamie almost lost his rag (went crazy) when he thought they were going to miss the flight. He had to practically shove her into the car. Poor Kate kept apologising. But she later joked that the ring’s protective powers left a lot to be desired."

Former child star JAIMEE FOXWORTH is five months pregnant with her first child.
The Family Ties actress appeared on the U.S. reality series Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew earlier this year (08) to battle an addiction to marijuana.
She has since kicked her drug demons - and is now looking forward to raising a child with her longtime boyfriend.
She tells People.com, "I haven’t been this happy in years. I am excited about what the future holds for us.
"Being sober has opened my eyes to a whole new world. I’ve been through a lot of pain in the past and I never really wanted a child until recently. I now look forward to years of joy to share with my child."

Japanese pop star AYUMI HAMASAKI has undergone surgery to her hand after injuring herself in a fall.
Hamasaki was scheduled to kick off 2009 by appearing on one of Japan’s most-watched countdown TV programmes, aired by public broadcaster NHK.
But the highly-anticipated performance was thrown into jeopardy after she took a tumble last week (begs22Dec08).
In a post on her website, Hamasaki explains the accident was due to anaemia caused by overworking.
And although doctors have recommended she takes several weeks rest, the star is hoping to continue with her New Year schedule.
She writes: "I feel frustrated as this accident was due to my own poor self-management." A statement released by the star’s agency adds: "She is continuing treatment to recover from her injury, but her condition is still not good.

THE X FACTOR winner ALEXANDRA BURKE has received more good news - her cover of LEONARD COHEN’s HALLELUJAH is the best-selling U.K. single of 2008.
The British TV talent show champion is currently occupying top place in the British chart with her version of the classic track, and it’s now officially the biggest single of 2008 after shifting 888,000 copies.
And Burke also features on the second biggest-selling single of the year, a cover of Mariah Carey’s Hero sung by The X Factor finalists, which sold 751,000 copies.
Welsh singer Duffy’s Mercy sold 531,000 copies to finish third on the end of year singles chart, while Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl and Nickelback’s Rockstar rounded out the top five.

Dance star MOBY had his sights set on a career in science - before legendary punk group the SEX PISTOLS "scared" him into forming a band.
The Porcelain DJ was focused on making a name for himself as a scientist until he found music - taking up guitar lessons aged 13.
But it wasn’t until he watched late hellraiser Sid Vicious perform on TV that the star decided he wanted to become a famous musician.
He says, "Up until I was 13 I wanted to be a scientist. Any type of scientist would have been good. After 13, I really wanted to be a guitar player. I saw a Sid Vicious video and it scared me so much I decided to form a punk rock band."

NICK JONAS dreams about marrying the perfect woman - and often discusses his plans to wed with brother JOE.

Pop star ANASTACIA understands why people download music illegally for free and can’t see a way to prevent it.
The I’m Outta Love hitmaker has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide, but concedes her music has probably reached many more because of the boom in online music sharing.
She says, "I understand why people steal music. If you’re a teenager and all your friends are getting music for free, you’re not going to be inclined to pay for it. Why would you? "I’d prefer it if people bought my music, but I understand why they might take it illegally. We’ve got a whole generation who believe it’s fine to take music without paying for it. How do we begin to reprogramme the way they think?"

The development of a New York hotel rapper JAY-Z invested in is on hold because the star and his partners cannot pull in further financing for the project.
The Big Pimpin’ hitmaker - real name Shawn Carter - ploughed money into J Hotels, which acquired a $66 million (£45.5 million) plot to build a high-end hotel in the Big Apple.
But due to the ailing economy, partners have failed to pull in investors and there is now a $370 million (£255 million) shortfall in funds, as even the banks won’t back the property development.
Charles Blaichman, one of Jay-Z’s partners, tells The New York Times, "A year ago it would have seemed a reasonable amount. Not now. Even the banks who want to give us money can’t."

Hollywood movie star TOM CRUISE is planning to have seven more kids with his wife KATIE HOLMES.
The actor adopted two children - Isabella, 16, and Connor, 13 - with ex-wife Nicole Kidman before becoming a biological parent for the first time in 2006, when Holmes gave birth to their daughter Suri.
And the Top Gun star is enjoying fatherhood so much, he wants to extend his family further.
He tells British newspaper The Sun, "I want ten children. I love kids. I feel really fortunate to have the teenagers and a two and a half-year-old. It’s a great dynamic." And Cruise reserves special praise for his youngest, Suri, adding: "She’s so charming, she’s so beautiful, she’s just great."
