MARTIN DREAMED UP VIVA LA VIDA
COLDPLAY frontman CHRIS MARTIN has hit out at accusations the band stole an idea for their track VIVA LA VIDA from guitarist JOE SATRIANI - and insists he dreamed up the song "in the middle of the night".
The British rockers are facing a lawsuit from Satriani, who has accused the group of copying segments from his 2004 instrumental If I Could Fly for their 2008 hit song.
The band issued a statement denying the allegations, and now Martin has come to the defence of the tune - declaring he can still remember when inspiration for the track struck him.
He tells NME.com, "When these things happen it’s a coincidence and we’re as surprised by it as anybody else.
"Oh, I know exactly where the song (Viva La Vida) came from. It came in the middle of the night, on a piano. I just get embarrassed about having to talk about these things.
"I do feel a bit upset about it because I wrote the song. But, you know, these things happen. Whatever will be will be." Satriani filed a lawsuit at Los Angeles federal court last week (04Dec08) seeking damages and profits from the Viva La Vida track.
