Veteran Indian actor M.N. NAMBIAR has died. He was 89.
The star passed away on Wednesday (19Nov08) in the city of Chennai, formerly known as Madras, after suffering from a short illness.
The actor, born Manjeri Narayan Nambiar, made his name in Tamil cinema with a career spanning six decades, with more than 1,000 films to his name.
He was frequently cast as the villain in his movies, and is most noted for films such as 1957’s Makkalai petra magaraasi, 1965’s Ayirathil Oruvan, and 1982’s Thooral Ninnu Pochhu.

Actress ALICIA SILVERSTONE has turned her hand to writing - she has penned a book on vegan dieting.
The Clueless star, who has been a vegan for 10 years and is an animal welfare activist, wrote the tome, entitled The Kind Diet, in a bid to promote healthy, natural eating.
According to Silverstone, the book "explores the connection between what we put in our bodies and what we’re doing to the planet, and how choosing the right foods in the kitchen can help you feeling lighter, sexier, and more alive".
The Kind Diet will also include a three step diet programme, along with 75 vegan and macrobiotic recipes, and is due out next year (09).

Comedy scriptwriter IRVING BRECHER has died at the age of 94.
He passed away on Monday (17Nov08) in Los Angeles after a series of heart attacks last week (beg10Nov08).
His most notable work included the vaudeville sketches he penned for Milton Berle and comedies he wrote for the Marx Brothers - including a solo credit on 1940 film Go West.
Early in his career, Brecher was an uncredited script doctor on The Wizard of Oz, leading Groucho Marx to call him The Wicked Wit of the West - the title of his autobiography, which is scheduled to hit shelves in January (09).
His film credits came to include Shadow of the Thin Man in 1941, 1943’s Du Barry Was a Lady, starring Lucille Ball, Gene Kelly and Red Skelton, Yolanda and the Thief in 1945, starring Fred Astaire, and 1963 classic Bye Bye Birdie.
Brecher was also nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for Meet Me in St. Louis, starring Judy Garland.
In addition to the silver screen, Brecher also turned his talents to radio, creating long-running series The Life of Riley - later adapted into a feature film and TV series in 1949.
He is survived by his wife, Norma, and three stepchildren.

Actress MARISSA JARET WINOKUR is returning to Broadway to reprise her role in hit musical HAIRSPRAY - five months after becoming a mother.
The cancer survivor and her comedy writer husband Judah Miller became first-time parents in July (08) when their son, Zev Isaac Miller, was delivered by a surrogate mother.
And now Winokur is heading back to the New York stage to star once again as teenager Tracy Turnblad in the show as the musical prepares for its final curtain call on 4 January (09).
She says, "To go back to the show that gave me a career, gave me a life and now I can share this with my child - how do you say no? Besides, when does a 35-year-old get to play 16?" But Winokur, who won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical in 2003, admits she had her reservations before agreeing to return to the Big Apple.
She adds, "The idea of going back to New York City with a newborn was ridiculously scary, and I was like, there’s no way I’m going to do it.
"But then there’s the idea of standing in midtown with my billboard and my son and taking a picture of that. How cool would that be?" The star will tread the boards at the Neil Simon Theatre, joining original co-star Harvey Fierstein, from 9 December (08).

Hollywood heavyweights SUSAN SARANDON, SPIKE LEE and ANNE HATHAWAY are among the long list of stars hosting a forthcoming event to celebrate U.S.
President-elect BARACK OBAMA’s inauguration.
The Creative Coalition’s Gala Inaugural Ball will see a legion of A-list attendees joining the five million people expected to attend the historic bash next year (09).
Organisers of the non-profit event are reportedly using their star supporters to solicit sponsorships of up to $150,000 (£99,700) from corporations and lobby firms, according to the New York Post.
The ball is scheduled for 20 January (09) - the same evening Obama will be sworn into office.

American talk show host JAY LENO’s obsession with the vintage car that sparked a lawsuit against him last month (Oct08) has inspired a new TV series.
The six-part series, Celebrity Rides: Jay’s Duesenberg, follows Leno’s restoration of the 1931 town car - one of two antique cars that belonged to John Strauss - heir to U.S. department store Macy’s.
According to a lawsuit filed by the estate, the cars were held in a Manhattan, New York garage for 50 years until they were put up for auction in 2005 without his knowledge, leading to Leno’s purchase.
Garage owner Dennis Ricca - who shot himself in the head days after the suit was filed - claimed the cars were sold after Strauss failed to pay $29,000 (£19,277) in parking fees.
Trustees for the estate of the Macy’s heir refute the claims and are demanding the return of the cars, plus unspecified damages.
But Leno’s lawyer, Bruce Bronster, insists the series was planned long before the suit was filed.
Bronster tells the New York Post, "Mr. Leno only recently in the last couple of months found out about this lawsuit. Everything that he did was above board, he was represented by counsel (during the purchase) and we have no comment on the ongoing litigation." The lawyer for the Strauss family has declined to comment.
Leno’s series is scheduled to air in the U.S. next May (09).

ANNE HATHAWAY has friends worried she’s headed for heartbreak - five months after splitting from her jailed ex-boyfriend, RAFFAELLO FOLLIERI.
The 26-year-old actress revealed she had found love again last month (Oct08) with actor Adam Shulman - during the same time Follieri was sentenced to a four-and-a-half year prison spell after pleading guilty to 14 counts of wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering.
Hathaway said at the time of her then-unknown new flame, "You know when you don’t know someone very well…you just meet them and you’re like, ‘Wow, you really have it going on’?" But according to a source at the New York Post, 27-year-old Shulman could be the wrong man for the actress, adding: "Adam is known as an opportunist. When he was at Brown (University), he went after all the heiresses. It’s like Anne is addicted to losers." A spokesperson for Shulman has declined to comment.

TIM ROBBINS has been urged to record a public service announcement (PSA) for the New York City Board of Elections - despite the actor seeking legal action following his Election Day (04Nov08) voting fiasco.
The star went to his local polling station in Manhattan on 4 November (08) only to find his name wasn’t on the list of voters.
Following a blazing row with officials, Robbins was finally able to cast his ballot after applying for a court order from a state Supreme Court judge.
But the Shawshank Redemption star was further infuriated by a letter from the New York Election Board after the incident, which accused him of simply going to the wrong polling station.
He is now consulting lawyers over the mess - but officials at the NYC Board of Elections have invited Robbins to speak on their behalf in a bid to encourage future voter participation.
A statement from New York officials reads: "The Board of Elections in the City of New York (NYC BOE) takes special pride in the conduct of the November 4, 2008 election. In our city of 8 million people with 4.6 million registered voters, 2.6 million registered voters went to the polls on Election Day.
"The NYC BOE is an administrative agency charged with the responsibility for conducting elections according to the law; a law that goes to great lengths to ensure ballot security and deter election fraud. We recognise the need for all voters to be informed of all electoral procedural requirements.
"We also recognise and applaud that passion of Mr. Robbins exhibited (sic) with regard to his Election Day experience. Therefore, to harness the passion of Mr. Robbins, and to further the purpose of the NYC BOE, we hereby extend our invitation Mr. Robbins (sic) to join the NYC BOE to produce voter participation service announcements."

Outspoken British rapper M.I.A. has brushed off her differences with fiance BENJAMIN BREWER’s conservative family - because his ancestors peddled bootleg booze.
The Paper Planes hitmaker is expecting her first child with The Exit singer/guitarist - heir to Seagram Company Ltd., once the largest distiller of alcoholic beverages in the world.
And she admits her political differences with Brewer’s family became less of a concern when she discovered their anti-Prohibition past.
She tells Spin magazine, "I’ve always had that f**k-the-system mentality, and his dad is so ‘the system’.
"But then, they’re the most liberal family - they bootlegged alcohol, for God’s sake. They’re rich because they threw big, illegal parties, so I don’t mind."

Producer DALLAS AUSTIN has blasted rumours he is working on a new project with reality TV star KIM ZOLCIAK - insisting THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF ATLANTA personality spread the false claims herself.
The music mogul, who has produced songs for artists including TLC, Madonna, and Michael and Janet Jackson, has appeared alongside Zolciak in several episodes of the U.S. show - with one episode showing the pair working in a recording studio.
Zolciak then went on to announce she is to release an album with the help of Austin - but the producer has lashed out at her with a post on his MySpace.com page.
In the message, he says, "Dallas Austin is not working with Kim Zolciak ‘The Housewife’ of Atlanta! That was only for television!! There is no song or album!"

OASIS star NOEL GALLAGHER turned action hero to save a former BOND girl’s dog from thieves.
The British rocker thwarted crooks as they tried to snatch a black labrador belonging to Caroline Munro - who starred as pilot Naomi in 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me.
According to British newspaper the Daily Mirror, Gallagher was near his house in London when he saw a bunch of youths trying to steal the pooch, which was tied up outside a supermarket.
Gallagher, a close neighbour of Munro, confronted the thieves - who promptly ran off.
A source tells the Mirror, "Noel was so brave - the men could have been carrying knives but he just didn’t care. He’s a tough guy and he doesn’t like people taking what isn’t theirs so he tackled them and they quickly fled."

Singer/actor TYRESE is bemused by reports he’s dating R&B star BRANDY - because they are so close, she is like his "sister".
The childhood pals sparked rumours of an affair after they were spotted out together on Sunday (16Nov08) at the Westfield Century City Shopping Center in Los Angeles.
But Tyrese - full name Tyrese Gibson - insists their relationship is purely platonic.
He says, "I would never date her (Brandy) - it would be like dating my sister.

PUSSYCAT DOLLS star NICOLE SCHERZINGER was so excited when boyfriend LEWIS HAMILTON won the Formula 1 World Championship title, she didn’t realise she was drenched in champagne.
The singer was watching track-side as Hamilton raced to victory earlier this month (Nov08), and was shown on camera excitedly celebrating with the race driver’s family as he clinched the 2008 World Title in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

And fellow Pussycat Doll star Jessica Sutta felt just as emotional watching the race from home, adding, "I was home just crying when he won and then I saw (Scherzinger) and I just went ‘aahhh’."

Style guru VICTORIA BECKHAM will spend two months in one of the world’s fashion capitals - the designer will accompany her soccer ace husband DAVID to Europe as he trains with a team in Milan, Italy.
The England midfielder will head to professional club A.C. Milan on loan from U.S. team Los Angeles Galaxy in January (09) in a bid to stay on top form.
And now Victoria has confirmed that she and their three sons - Brooklyn, nine, Romeo, six, and three year old Cruz - will also journey to Italy.
She says, "It will literally be for two months because the season finishes here in L.A. and David will go to train with A.C. Milan.
"We are so supportive, myself and the children. It’s a great opportunity for him and we are very excited about spending time in Milan." And the former Spice Girl is convinced her fashionable surroundings will have an influence on her designs.
She adds: "Obviously I will be very busy as well because I will be preparing to show my next collection in February in New York.
"I have so many friends there and my experience of Italy is great. The best thing you can give a designer is the ability to travel and experience different cultures, countries, and so for me, it’s huge."

VICTORIA BECKHAM was delighted to be asked to model underwear for Italian fashion house ARMANI - so she could show off her newly-toned body.
The former Spice Girl will debut as the "worldwide testimonial" for Emporio Armani Women’s underwear in the Spring/Summer 2009 campaign, with shots that were taken last month (Oct08).
And the mother-of-three worked extra-hard to get her figure perfect for the shoot.
She says, "I started running regularly about a year ago and when this campaign came about, I began working harder every day.
"And this morning I got on the treadmill and said, ‘OK then - this is my last chance!’" Beckham featured in Marc Jacobs’ campaign earlier this year (08) - and felt honoured to take part in another international fashion shoot.
She adds, "It’s a huge compliment being asked to be in the campaign and to be part of the worldwide campaign for Emporio Armani underwear.
"It’s really exciting to me. Mr. (Georgio) Armani is a lovely person and his team is fantastic, so it’s a really exciting project for me to be involved with. And hopefully they will see a huge response."
