HALEY JOEL OSMENT’s Broadway bosses are trying to save him from more embarrassing headlines, two years after he was caught drink driving - by keeping him away from alcohol during his stint in the play AMERICAN BUFFALO.
At a star-studded launch party for the production in New York on Monday night (17Nov08) each of the play’s lead actors, directors and producers were presented with a bottle of whisky.
That’s everyone except for the 20-year-old child star, who was given an XBox360 games console instead - presumably to keep him busy and away from Manhattan’s notorious party scene.
A red-faced Osment had to pick up the gift from party host Cedric the Entertainer, who told the crowd, "Well, he hasn’t quite crossed the threshold yet but I’m gonna save him a few bottles for when he does." Osment hit headlines in July 2006, when he flipped his car while driving drunk in Hollywood. He was also found to be in possession of marijuana, and was sentenced to probation, rehab, a course of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and a hefty fine.
Theatre bosses are obviously keen to keep the still-underage star out of the gossip pages for the wrong reasons - but they’ll have his American Buffalo co-star John Leguizamo to contend with.
The 44-year-old Romeo + Juliet star reveals, "He’s only 20 but he can’t wait.
We’ll try to lead him astray. And there are other vices besides drinking."

Lifestyle guru MARTHA STEWART has been targetted in a new lawsuit accusing her company of making defective furniture that caused a hand model to lose his finger.
In a lawsuit filed on Monday (17Nov08) against Kmart Corp. and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Patrick Albanese - a hand model and magician - claims he was moving the Martha Stewart Everyday lounge chair in June (08) when its front legs collapsed, slicing his right index finger.
The fingertip had to be reattached by a surgeon, according to Albanese’s attorney, Guy Cook.
Cook says, "He’s a very accomplished musician and as part of his work, he does various slight-of-hand tricks." Albanese is seeking compensation for past and future medical expenses, physical and mental pain and suffering, permanent partial disfigurement and loss of earning capacity.
Spokespersons for Kmart and Martha Stewart Living have declined to comment.

DA VINCI CODE director RON HOWARD had to shoot the movie’s forthcoming prequel using imitations of the Catholic churches in the storyline - after the Vatican banned him from all of its holy buildings.
The first movie’s portrayal of the Catholic church angered the religion’s heads, who were in no mood to cooperate when Howard headed to Rome, Italy this year (08) to shoot an adaptation of author Dan Brown’s 2000 book Angels & Demons, which is set in the Vatican City.
As a result, Howard has been forced to used camera trickery and substitute locations.
He reveals, "We’ve had problems filming in Catholic Churches. We just weren’t allowed anywhere near them."

Rapper KANYE WEST is convinced he is unlucky in love - because he has so many failed relationships behind him.
The Stronger hitmaker split from his fiancee, Alexis Phifer, in April (08) and is currently on the look out for a new partner.
But West fears he may never find the right woman, as most of his romances have been doomed from the start.
He says, "Most of my relationships haven’t been good. Maybe it’s about not being able to tell who’s the right person to be in your life and not knowing when to cut them off, allowing to suck energy from you constantly." But West admits he might just be too picky when it comes to finding a mate.
He adds,"The thing I want in women comes with so much other stuff that is hard to deal with. There are so many pretty girls that are so insecure, I wish I could find that balance, just a woman that excites me enough intellectually and physically and emotionally supportive-wise and still have a mind of her own, and can really stand on her own too - financially and emotionally."

KANYE WEST has gained an unusual mentor - U2 frontman BONO.
Rapper West bonded with the Irish singer after supporting the rockers on tour in 2006.
They cemented their friendship later that year (06) after the MTV Europe Music Awards, when West was left fuming after failing to win a single prize.
But West credits his new friend with supporting him through that difficult time - when many others were attacking him for his behaviour - and admits he has now become a close confidante of the One hitmaker.
He says, "Bono took me under his wing and he believed in me.
"When I made my protest over not getting an award at the MTV Awards a couple of years ago, and nobody wanted to hear anything from me afterwards, Bono and U2 stood by me."

Teen star MILEY CYRUS has launched an attack on the internet hacker who broke into her YouTube account and falsely claimed she had died in a car crash.
A video was uploaded onto Cyrus’ official page on the video sharing website on Sunday (16Nov08), telling fans she was the victim of a drink driving accident.
The allegations upset her friends and family, who quickly denied the claims blaming the incident on an internet hacker.
But the 15-year-old insists she’s grown accustomed reading fictional stories written about her.
Pretending to be unaware of the event, she jokes with TV reporters on E!, "What happened? Did I die, like, bungee jumping, getting bulldozed, what happened this time? I got hit by a drunk driver! Ok, good. Wait. What? On my Web page? No. My Web page got hacked?" When details were cleared up, Cyrus admitted she was "ticked" at the culprit behind the computer screen.
She added, "I’m gonna, like, smack ‘em!"

50 CENT is unconvinced by fellow superstar KANYE WEST’s change of musical direction - hinting the STRONGER star should stick to rapping instead of singing on his new album.
West sings throughout forthcoming LP 808s & Heartbreak with the help of Auto-Tune - leaving the majority of the rapping to guest stars Young Jeezy and Lil Wayne.
But former rap rival 50 Cent is not won over by the T-Pain produced project although he concedes the idea is "interesting".
He tells MTV.com, "I heard, like, seven songs. There’s a place for it. I think people will enjoy it if you’re actually in love or going through something. I think Kanye’s going through an interesting point in his career.
"I don’t think the public will forgive (West) for it, but it’s interesting. I think it’s T-Pain’s record, but I’d rather buy it from T-Pain."

50 CENT has laughed off real estate pal DONALD TRUMP’s assertion the rapper’s new MTV reality show is based on his programme THE APPRENTICE - insisting the ageing tycoon has gone "senile" if he thinks they’re similar.
The In Da Club hitmaker, real name Curtis Jackson, recently launched The Money and the Power to find the next big business boss.
The show sees a group of contestants fight it out for the grand prize of $100,000 (£670,000) cash and assistance from the superstar to achieve their dreams.
But 50 Cent is adamant his programme is vastly different from Trump’s The Apprentice, after the tycoon claimed the "copy" will fail "because it’s not Trump".
The rap mogul tells MTV, "Donald Trump talking about my show and how it’s a knockoff of The Apprentice? He’s crazy! "That’s what happens when you get older - you start to view things differently. First, let me point out (my show) got the highest ratings.
"I said, ‘What’s the matter with Donald?’ He’s got a little age on him. He must be getting senile." And the hip-hop entrepreneur also took the opportunity to hand out his own career advice to the property tycoon, adding: "In this economy, he may want to go sing ‘In Da Club’ instead of selling real estate!"

Bosses at a New York restaurant owned by ROBERT DE NIRO have denied plans to replace their head chef - after the cook threatened to take him to court.
Managers at De Niro’s Ago restaurant reportedly intended to replace Executive Chef Mirco del Vecchio with Jean-Georges Vongerichten in January (09) amid poor reviews from food critics.
But del Vecchio says the alleged switch would violate both written and verbal contracts he has with De Niro.
His lawyer Salvatore Strazzullo tells the New York Post, "We’re looking for damages in the $3 million (£2 million) area." However, a manager at Ago denies the claims, adding: "It’s absolutely not true that we are planning on replacing del Vecchio. He is a dear friend."

Rapper SNOOP DOGG has unleashed a clever way to outrun the paparazzi - he ducks into dodgy neighbourhoods.
The Long Beach, California native is often hounded by photographers on the hunt for a picture, and he’s initiated his own scare tactics to avoid unflattering photos.
And even if some snappers still dare to follow him, the rapper’s burly bodyguards have no problem dealing with them.

New JAMES BOND film QUANTUM OF SOLACE has shot down the competition to remain atop the U.K. box office chart for a third consecutive week.
The spy thriller, starring Daniel Craig, raked in $7.68 million (£5.16 million) over the last weekend (14-16Nov08) to stay at number one - leaving new release Max Payne trailing in second place with $1.49 (£1 million).

Comedian AL FRANKEN’s opponent for a for a U.S. Senate seat in Minnesota has lashed out at the star for meeting with Congress leaders pending a vote recount.
The former Saturday Night Live star beat six opponents to take the Democratic nomination with 66 per cent of the public vote in the state’s primary election in September (08).
He has been accused by Republican Senator Norm Coleman - who leads by 206 votes - of acting pre-emptively by meeting with Senate Democratic leaders on Tuesday (18Nov08) - two weeks after the general election.
Coleman’s spokesman tells the New York Post, "It is highly presumptuous for Mr. Franken to undertake such a visit when his real purpose appears to be fundraising and gaining partisan advantage from non-Minnesotans." The manual recount to certify the final outcome starts on Wednesday (19Nov08).

Fashion queen VIVIENNE WESTWOOD has come up with the perfect storyline for a sequel to the SEX AND THE CITY movie - but wants to keep it under wraps.
Adapted from the hit TV series, Sex And The City: The Movie stormed international box offices on its release earlier this year (08), grossing more than $300 million (£200 million) worldwide.
And British designer Westwood, who acted as a consultant on the first film, insists she has a great storyline for a possible sequel - but will not reveal all until she has told the movie’s star Sarah Jessica Parker.
Asked about a follow-up to the film, she tells Grazia magazine: "No one has mentioned that to me as of yet but I will tell you that I have had a great idea for the plot of a sequel.
"It came to me only the other day and I think it’s a brilliant story. I’ve been trying to get hold of Sarah Jessica Parker to suggest it but I haven’t managed to reach her so far. I’m probably too late if they’re already talking about the sequel but I hope not as it’s really rather a good idea. I’m not telling you any more until I’ve spoken to Sarah Jessica though."

B.B. KING’s endorsement of a tonic made it a roaring success - but the real reason for its popularity was its alcoholic content.
The blues legend was hired to perform the jingle for "blood-building tonic" Peptikon in 1948 - and thought his song caused the drink to fly off the shelves.
But he later discovered people were buying the pick-me-up because it was laced with alcohol.
He tells Relix magazine, "(I had to sing) ‘Peptikon, sure is good! You can get it anywhere in your neighbourhood!’ "It was supposed to be good for anything that ails you. I’m 83 now, and people my age then - especially church people - boy, they bought it like there’d never be anymore… I picked up a bottle of it, and it was 12 per cent alcohol, so now I know why a lot of those old people bought it."

JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT has called in the police after her trailer on the set of TV show GHOST WHISPERER was broken into last week (ends14Nov08).
The actress lost a number of personal items in the burglary, which occurred during filming at the Universal Studios lot in Hollywood.
Website TMZ.com reports cops are now investigating the break-in, although it is unknown whether Love Hewitt was on set during the incident.

The Crazy In Love star is particularly enamoured with "super-high" stilettos and is determined to fill her wardrobe with new acquisitions.
