HELLBOY director GUILLERMO DEL TORO is in talks with puppeteers at the JIM HENSON CO. to take fairytale PINOCCHIO to the big screen.
The Mexican filmmaker plans to add a dark spin to the children’s story, and is working on a screenplay with Gris Grimly, who illustrated a 2002 animated version of Pinocchio.
During an interview with Bloodydisgusting.com, Del Toro reveals he expects the project to take three years to complete.
If it reaches the big screen, Del Toro will have gone one better than director Francis Ford Coppola, whose attempt to make a Pinocchio movie in the 1990s ended in a messy legal battle with Warner Bros.

CAROL ALT is claiming victory despite losing a legal battle with her ex-husband - because the end of the bitter saga has left her free to get on with her life.
Earlier this month (Nov08) the 47-year-old former supermodel was ordered to pay ex-spouse Ron Greschner’s legal fees, after failing in her attempt to make him pay a share of an investment made during their marriage.
Alt has been left more than $30,000 (£20,000) out of pocket - but she’s happy it’s all over.
She tells the New York Daily News, "The first thing I said when I came out of the courthouse was ‘It’s freedom’. Regardless of what the outcome was, I understand who this man is, and it’s freedom for me." And she insists business is booming: "I’m working like crazy. I have four books out, a skin-care line. I’m shooting movies. I’m working like nuts."

Reality TV boss NIGEL LYTHGOE is calling on Hollywood’s rich and famous to help him tackle child poverty in Los Angeles.
The Brit, a former executive producer of American Idol and current judge on So You Think You Can Dance, has placed a full-page advertisement in Monday’s (17Nov08) edition of trade paper Daily Variety, highlighting the plight of L.A.’s poor.
In the ad, Lythgoe asks the city’s artistic community to help the needy on their doorstep, and "remember those wise words ‘charity begins at home’," particularly when it comes to "violence, starvation and illiteracy" among L.A.’s youth.
The 49-year-old reveals he will direct an artistic event for kids in the city on 14 December (08), in conjunction with charity L.A.’s BEST, where children will get the chance to show off their talents on stage.
And he is asking for support for the venture.
He writes, "This country and this town in particular have been so good to me… L.A. is a divided city. There is one side, where people from all over the world can come together creatively and fulfil their dreams. Yet, there is this other side of L.A., the darker side. All proceeds from this event will go to L.A.’s BEST. Your support will make an enormous difference for thousands of children who, without LA’s BEST, would be on the streets. If we can change the lives of children… then we can change the darker side of L.A."

A new chapter has been opened in HARRY POTTER author J.K. ROWLING’s long-running battle with a fan who planned to publish an unauthorised guide to her franchise, after he filed a court appeal.
Rowling and executives at Warner Bros - maker of the films and owner of intellectual property rights to the books - won legal proceedings against writer Steve Vander Ark and publisher RDR Books earlier this year (Sep08).
The writer has so far managed to stall the publication of the 400-page text after learning of their plans to release The Harry Potter Lexicon, detailed in a suit filed last year (07).
RDR’s legal team was expected to file a notice of appeal in September (08), but has dragged on the legal battle with the notice filed on 7 November (08) to the United States Court of Appeals, reports Publisher’s Weekly.
The writers have offered to revise the book and remove any offending or copyrighted passages, which Rowling has reportedly declined to agree to.

Hollywood actress SIGOURNEY WEAVER is training to become a pilot - making her flying debut just weeks after a terrifying incident onboard a commercial jet.
The Alien star was due to start taking courses when she was involved in an emergency on a flight.
She recalls, "There was a big sound at the back of the plane. Something must have popped open I guess and all the oxygen masks dropped down. We had to dive about 10,000 feet so our brains wouldn’t pop but the stewardesses were such terrible actors.
"They were running up and down saying things like, ‘How’s your water?’ when it was obvious they were panicking. I was curiously calm, but what can you do?" And Weaver is adamant that the experience failed to put her off flying for real - she took to the skies for her first lesson in the mountains over Montreal, Canada, just weeks after the incident.

An overdose of prescription drugs has been blamed for the death of AMERICAN IDOL judge PAULA ABDUL’s alleged stalker last week (11Nov08), according to new reports.
Paula Goodspeed, a failed former Idol contestant, was found dead in her car close to the star’s home in Sherman Oaks, California on Tuesday.
Police have indicated she may have died from a drug overdose, a theory which has been fuelled by new reports on website TMZ.com that "multiple prescription bottles" were found on her body.
Goodspeed is said to have become obsessed with Abdul after her brief audition for the show in 2006 and reportedly overdosed in the same area last year (07).
On Monday (17Nov08) Abdul denied reports she has refused to return to her Los Angeles home since the tragic death because she fears Goodspeed is "haunting her house".
Abdul’s spokesperson tells the New York Post, "She’s been home since the incident happened. There’s no issue with spirits. Paula is shocked and saddened by what transpired. Her heart and prayers go out to the Goodspeed family."

RYAN ADAMS has sparked a war of words with THE KILLERS - insisting he couldn’t watch one of their concerts without walking out.
The rocker has blasted the Mr Brightside hitmakers as a Las Vegas novelty act who are only in a band to be famous.

FALL OUT BOY had to perform in New York without PETE WENTZ on Sunday (16Nov08), as the bassist awaited the birth of his first child.
Wentz’s wife Ashlee Simpson is heavily pregnant, and due to deliver at any time - so he stayed behind in California as his bandmates jetted to the Big Apple to rock out the final episode of MTV music show TRL.
But the star was watching on TV back home and called into the studio to give an update on Simpson’s condition. He said, "Not here yet! Nothing’s happened yet!"

Religious rocker PRINCE is knocking on the doors of U.S. politicians, preaching about his faith as a Jehovah’s Witness.
The Sexy M.F. singer became a Jehovah’s Witness in 2001 and is using the faith to fight what he considers the extreme ideals held by America’s duelling political parties.
He tells the New Yorker magazine, "Here’s how it is: you’ve got the Republicans, and basically they want to live according to this (the Bible). But there’s the problem of interpretation, and you’ve got some churches, some people, basically doing things and saying it comes from here, but it doesn’t.
"And then on the opposite end of the spectrum you’ve got blue, you’ve got the Democrats, and they’re, like, ‘You can do whatever you want’. Gay marriage, whatever. But neither of them is right." When asked about his perspective on social issues including gay marriage and abortion, the singer reportedly tapped a copy of the Bible, adding, "God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, ‘Enough’."

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE offered to remix T-PAIN’s hit song CAN’T BELIEVE IT after picking it out as his favourite rap record.
The former ‘N Sync star listened to all of the rapper’s tracks before announcing that the single with Lil Wayne was his pick of the bunch.
And T-Pain was shocked to receive a phone call informing him that Timberlake wanted to create a new version of the track.
He tells AllHipHop.com, "Justin and I met about six months ago. I was working on the album in a Miami studio and he was in the room next door.
"He came by, I played him a few tracks and afterward he said that, out of all my song, Can’t Believe It was his favourite. I was shocked. Fast-forward to this week and I got a call saying Justin had hopped on Can’t Believe It.
"This is an artist who rarely does remixes, and out of every hot record out there, (he) chose to hop on mine. That’s some real amazing s**t. I immediately called and thanked him."

Actress SCARLETT JOHANSSON is still shocked over the vulgar remarks LINDSAY LOHAN allegedly scribbled about her by on a New York City bathroom stall because she barely knows her.

And Johansson is still baffled by the graffiti, since the two actresses have only met a handful of times.

Legendary stage actor SIR TOM COURTENAY has hit out at the growing trend for musicals, insisting they have pushed plays out of fashion.
The Billy Liar star is adamant the growing number of music-based shows running in the West End theatre heartland of London is damaging the acting industry.
And he wants more plays brought to the stage, so that actors can get a solid grounding when they learn their trade.
Courtenay, 71, says, "In my day we learned to tread the boards, which is what we wanted, and there were lots of plays on the West End stage. Now it’s all musicals, which is a shame."

MELISSA JOAN HART found it easy to slim down after giving birth - she’s too busy looking after her kids to eat.
The Drive Me Crazy actress welcomed son Braydon in March (08), her second child with husband Mark Wilkerson.

Bollywood legend AMITABH BACHCHAN is back at work filming a commercial - just a month after he was hospitalised with acute stomach pains.
The star was treated for a week after falling ill with an "intestinal obstruction" on his 66th birthday in October (09).
It sparked fears that his punishing work schedule was taking a toll on the Indian actor’s health.
But he has since made a rapid recovery and has begun shooting an advertisement at a five-star hotel in Mumbai, India.
Writing on his website, Bachchan says, "It’s wonderful to be back in front of the camera but quite honestly I was rather enjoying the rest days. Nothing to do, no schedules and timings to rush to, no compulsions… just lying back and taking my own time over it. Ah! Well can’t have everything in life your way."

Rockers NINE INCH NAILS have found a replacement for their drummer JOSH FREESE - they have hired LOSTPROPHETS star ILAN RUBIN.
Freese recently announced he is to quit the group at the end of the year (08) to spend more time with his pregnant girlfriend, who is expecting the couple’s third child in January (09).
And frontman Trent Reznor insists they have now found the perfect drummer to take over from Freese, according to Blabbermouth.net.
He writes on the band’s website, "I had the chance to see Ilan playing his ass off at Reading and Leeds (festivals in the U.K.) a couple (of) summers ago and he blew me away. We recently invited him out to rehearse with us and he blew U.S. away - the perfect guy to pick up the sticks after Josh leaves us at the end of the year."
