Actor MICKEY ROURKE fled to New York as a teenager - after a terrifying confrontation with gun-toting drug dealers.
The former wildman admits he was shocked into cleaning up his act after he got caught up in a "gunfight" in Miami, Florida when he was 18.
He left for New York to escape his lifestyle - and carved out a successful acting career.
Rourke tells Maxim magazine, "I found (myself) on the short end of a gunfight. (I was) only 18, and it was just some monkey business gone wrong - a drug-deal ripoff. And our guns were smaller than theirs.
"I realised I wasn’t going to live long in this line of work. It’s nice playing those kinds of people in movies, but in real life, it sucks."

Actress JANE FONDA and former husband TED TURNER have opened up about their tumultuous marriage the media mogul’s new memoir.
In his autobiography, Call Me Ted, the pair both come clean about the events that led to their 2001 divorce.
In one passage, Turner admits he’s always been "better in business and sailing than I was in marriage," adding, "Monogamy for me has always been a struggle… My dad told me ‘real men run around’." Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter also contributes to the tome, recalling how Turner turned to him shortly after reading that Fonda was divorcing second husband Tom Hayden.
He writes, "Ted said to me, ‘I think I’m going to call that woman up and ask her for a date.’" Turner writes of his later phone call to Fonda, "She was taken aback. She said she was flattered… but that she needed six months (before she’d be ready to date again). I called her again. I said, ‘Hi, it’s Ted Turner. The six months are up.’" The pair enjoyed nearly 10 years of marriage before they split. But Turner admits he’s still in love with the star.
He adds, "Jane attempted to maintain her independence. Our crowded schedules took a toll on our relationship…
"I loved Jane very much and still love her to this day." Fonda reminisces in the book about the pair’s memories together, but adds of their divorce: "For Ted, there’s a fear of abandonment that is deeper than with anyone I’ve ever known… He needs constant companionship, and keeping up with him can be exhausting."

THE DARK KNIGHT, INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL and IRON MAN lead the 35th Annual People’s Choice Awards after claiming this year’s (08) top nominations.
The three films will battle it out for favourite overall movie and favourite action movie at the viewer-voted awards, with honours being presented in over 40 categories.
Blockbuster stars Robert Downey Jr., Harrison Ford and Will Smith are vying for the title of favourite male movie star at the event, while Christian Bale, Brad Pitt and Mark Wahlberg are paired against each other for favourite leading man.
Bale, Downey Jr. and Smith will also compete for favourite male action star.
Meanwhile the nominees for favourite female movie star include Angelina Jolie, Keira Knightley and Reese Witherspoon.
Anne Hathaway, Kate Hudson and Queen Latifah will compete for the favourite leading lady, while Cate Blanchett, Hathaway and Jolie will vie for the favourite female action star honour.
Comedic actress Queen Latifah is set to host the event, airing live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on 7 January (09).

MOLDY PEACHES rocker ADAM GREEN is writing a Broadway musical about a homeless dog.
The play is based on Paul Auster’s novella Timbuktu, which is told through the eyes of a dog on the streets of Baltimore, Maryland with his dying homeless owner.
Green reveals his influences are "West Side Story and Jacques Brel" but hints he won’t be dropping his trademark rock sound - made famous on the soundtrack to movie Juno.
He says, "What’s wrong with rock songs onstage?" Green’s former bandmate Kimya Dawson is also working on a soundtrack - she has been commissioned to write music for kids TV show Sesame Street.

The main suspect in the murders of JENNIFER HUDSON’s mother, brother and nephew will remain behind bars on a parole violation while the investigations into the slayings continue.
William Balfour, who was married to the Oscar winning singer/actress’ sister Julia, was arrested last month (Oct08), following the grisly murders, and held by police on a parole violation.
He went before the Illinois State Parole Review Board on Monday (10Nov08) to determine whether there was enough evidence to charge him with a violation or murder.
He remains in custody after his current girlfriend claims she saw him with a gun "identical to the gun recovered by the Chicago police near the body of the murdered child" days before the killings, according to the chairman of the Illinois Parole Review Board.
Members of the panel ruled they found "probable cause to keep "Mr. Balfour until December 3" until a full review of the case and evidence against him will be reviewed again.

Actress EVAN RACHEL WOOD has denied she is dating her THE WRESTLER co-star MICKEY ROURKE - insisting they are just friends.
Internet gossips circulated rumours the 21-year-old was romantically involved with Rourke, 56, after they were spotted out together in Los Angeles on a break from filming.
The pair reportedly became an item on-set of the biopic of 1980s wrestler Randy "Ram" Robinson, in which Wood plays Rourke’s on-screen daughter.
But Wood believes she has only been linked to her co-star because of her recent split from shock rocker Marilyn Manson.
She tells People.com, "Spread the word - I’m not dating Mickey Rourke.
Everybody thinks we’re dating and we’re not.
"We are proud of the film we made together and I hope people will focus on the film and not get distracted by any nonsense."

Hip-hop star 50 CENT sneaked a look through EMINEM’s computer files in order to draw inspiration for a new song.
The In Da Club hitmaker is set to release his latest album, entitled Before I Self Destruct, later this year (Dec08).
And he has fellow rapper Eminem to thank for one of the tracks, after visiting his rapper friend at home in Detroit - and lifting some music from his PC.
He says, "I did a song produced by Dr. Dre. I got the production from Detroit, because Dre was working with Em right before I got out there. I just missed him. I went through Em’s computer and found what I needed. Yes, I did.
"I got me the record I needed. I was like, ‘Wait till they hear this’. I wrote it; Em heard it. He was like, ‘You gotta keep that for yourself. This is too crazy.’ First, I think he was gonna take it from me, then he was like, ‘He gotta use that for himself.’"

DANIEL CRAIG is planning to buy a permanent home - because he is so fed up of living out of a suitcase.
The James Bond star has been staying in hotels for the past two years due to his hectic work schedule.
But Craig, 40, now feels the time is right to set up a base.
He says: "I just haven’t had the time to buy anywhere. I’m hoping to get somewhere more solid this year because I’ve been living in hotels for the past two years.

When I was 19 - when I was confused and wondering what am I doing, who am I? - we were in the record store, my mom and dad were both there, and my song was playing, and I was feeling like hot stuff.
"She was asking me something and I started singing while she was talking to me. And there were some really cute guys in the store who were noticing me, and I was like, ‘Oh yeah! I’m hot!’ And my mom said, ‘I’m talking to you’. And I kept singing. And so she smacked me - slapped me in my face, so hard.
"And my dad said, ‘What are you doing?’ Because I didn’t get spankings growing up. They didn’t believe in that. My mom says, ‘She thinks she’s hot stuff ‘cos her single is out. Nobody cares about that! You are still my child.
I brought you into this world, I can take you out of it! Now go sit in the car’. But it was the best thing she could have ever done to me because for the first time I realised I was losing sight of what was important."

LORD OF THE RINGS star SEAN BEAN hates working away from the U.K. - because he misses the miserable weather.
The British actor - who starred as Boromir in the hugely successful film trilogy - often spends long periods working in the U.S.
But Bean is adamant that he will never move to America permanently - because he loves coming back to his family home in South Yorkshire, England and watching his beloved soccer team Sheffield United.

TARA REID has reportedly dropped her high-profile booking agent in an effort to shake off her party-girl image and salvage her acting career.
The American Pie star raised eyebrows by booking guest appearances at nightclubs for cash and hosting events including a Hustler bar party in Australia earlier this year (08).
But friends of the star, 33, insist she has now dropped Richard Squire, the booking agent who was reportedly responsible for lending her name to the events.
Squire, who is said to have also worked with actresses Nicollette Sheridan and Kim Kardashian, is "in a different place", according to a source at the New York Post.
Another source confirms, "She is no longer working with him." A spokesperson for Reid has declined to comment.

Filmmaker JOE JOHNSTONE will take the helm of the eagerly anticipated CAPTAIN AMERICA movie.
The Jurassic Park III director has signed a deal with Marvel Studios to bring the comic book superhero to the big screen in 2011.
It is the third Marvel film in the pipeline, including Thor and the Avengers, after Robert Downey Jr.’s turn as Iron Man earlier in the year (08) proved a huge success with superhero fans.
Although Johnstone has signed the deal, it is unknown who will take on the patriotic U.S. role.
Comic book creator Stan Lee has given his backing to Will Smith to wear the red, white and blue suit, although other insiders have suggested Matthew McConaughey may land the part.

Former SOPRANOS actor LILLO BRANCATO JR. should be cleared of the murder of a New York cop because he wasn’t carrying a gun when the officer was shot, according to the troubled star’s father.
Speaking after a court hearing on Friday (07Nov08), when Brancato Jr’s trial was set for 17 November (08), Lillo Brancato Sr protested his son’s innocence of the first degree murder charge he faces.
The 32-year-old actor is accused of killing off-duty cop Daniel Enchautegui when he disturbed Brancato Jr and accomplice Steven Armento breaking into a neighbour’s New York home in December 2005.
Armento, who fired the shot that killed the officer, was convicted of murder on 30 October (08).
Brancato Jr faces a similar fate, despite maintaining he wasn’t carrying a gun that night. And his father insists the actor has "never touched a gun in his life".
Brancato Sr, 61, tells the New York Daily News, "I support him 100 per cent.
My son had no gun in his hand and he got shot (twice by Enchautegui)." The actor - who also played Robert De Niro’s son in movie A Bronx Tale faces life in prison, without parole, if convicted.

GLENN CLOSE will be honoured for her long-running Hollywood career next month (Dec08) by industry publication The Hollywood Reporter as it unveils the annual 100 most powerful women in entertainment list.
The Fatal Attraction star will receive the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award when the publication reveals the revered list for 2008 at the 17th annual ceremony on 5 December (08).
The award is named after the former CEO of Paramount Pictures - the first woman to head a major movie studio - and celebrates Hollywood’s most successful actresses.
Close has earned five Oscar nominations throughout her 33 year career, as well as garnering two Golden Globe awards, two Emmys and three Tony Awards for her theatre and musical roles.
The 61-year-old enjoyed a career revival in 2007 playing hard-hitting litigator Patty Hughes in hit U.S. series Damages.
The Hollywood Reporter’s editor Elizabeth Guide, says, "It’s the amazing performances she’s had of late on cable (TV), which has brought her back in the public consciousness, and the fact she’s been active in community fundraising and a real industry leader." Former winners of the honour include Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep and Barbara Walters.

Comedic actor BILL MURRAY’s celebration of U.S. President-elect BARACK OBAMA’s victory was cut short by police - after he reportedly got into a scuffle with a fellow reveller.
According to reports, Murray was celebrating Obama’s victory in New York’s Times Square amid a mass of fellow Democratic supporters on 4 November (08) when a row broke out, prompting a call to police.
A source tells the New York Post, “Bill was standing in this line of people, and then this smaller guy walked through the line very abruptly and knocked into him. Murray turned around, and the man who bumped him was not apologetic at all. He wanted to fight right there.” Police reportedly carried off Murray’s offender, though no arrest was made.
Murray’s business manager had no comment on the incident.

American conductor THOMAS DUNN has died of heart failure at the age of 82.
Dunn passed away on 26 October (08) in his home of Bloomington, Indiana.
He also suffered from Parkinson’s disease for several years.
A specialist in Baroque music, Dunn appeared at Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, Avery Fisher Hall and other major auditoriums in New York as a choral and orchestral conductor.
He was also a past music director of the Cantata Singers, a highly regarded amateur group in the city.
But Dunn was perhaps best known as the founder and conductor of the Festival Orchestra of New York - an ensemble that was critically acclaimed throughout its existence from 1959 to 1969.
He later served as the music director of Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society from 1967 to 1986 - among the oldest operating performing-arts organisations in the U.S.
He is survived by his partner, David Manuel Villanueva.

Teen singer TAYLOR SWIFT has ruled out discussing ex-boyfriend JOE JONAS in future interviews - because he is no longer a part of her life.
The country music sensation recently admitted she had split from The Jonas Brothers star after months of press speculation surrounding their relationship.

After telling the embarrassed funnywoman they were no longer together, Swift took a swipe at the importance of the relationship, saying, "That’s OK… I’m not even gonna be able to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18 (in years to come)." And now, Swift has called for an end to the questions, telling The New York Times, "He’s not in my life anymore, and I have absolutely nothing to say about or to him."
