Actor COLIN FARRELL has defended the violence in his new cop drama PRIDE AND GLORY, insisting there is nothing "gratuitous" about the fighting in the film.
Farrell, who stars alongside Edward Norton in the movie, plays a corrupt New York police officer who, in one scene, threatens a baby with a steam iron.
But the actor is adamant that the scenes were central to the plot.
He says, "I don’t feel the violence is gratuitous.
"I felt it was essential to show the level of desperation that this character had got to."

Pop star KYLIE MINOGUE’s breast cancer battle has increased the number of women having screening checks in her native Australia, according to a cancer expert.
Doctor Helen Zorbas has reported that the number of women who make regular appointments to be checked for the disease has risen dramatically - branding it the "Kylie Effect".
The Spinning Around hitmaker was diagnosed with the disease in 2005, and underwent surgery and chemotherapy before entering remission in October 2006.
Fellow breast cancer survivor Christina Applegate, who had a double mastectomy following her diagnosis in July (08), was also cited as a reason for the rise in women seeking checks.
But Ward warns young women may begin to panic about a rise in the cancer because several famous women have suffered from the disease in recent years.
She says, "You could be forgiven for thinking there was an epidemic among the young. It is important to dispel the misconceptions, address unnecessary alarm and provide the facts for this age group.
"The so-called ‘Kylie Effect’ led to an increase in the number of women who made bookings for mammograms but many of these women were in the under 40 age group, where mammographic screening is not effective."

MATT DAMON took time out as a full-time father to help rally support for U.S.
presidential candidate BARACK OBAMA as America fast approaches its decision day at the ballot box next month (Nov08).
The Bourne Identity star has put his movie career on hold until the end of the year (08) so he can enjoy time with his family - especially new arrival Gia, who was born in August (08).
But the star is determined to see Obama made the next U.S. president, and dedicated his spare time at the weekend (25/26Oct08) to participate in a Florida campaign - titled Florida VoteFest ‘08 - to urge his fellow U.S.
citizens to vote early.
The star tells People.com, "I took time off from acting until the end of the year to be with my family and enjoy our new daughter.
"But it is very important for me to do what I can to help the Obama campaign so people will go out and vote. We need change in this country and now is the time to be sure that happens." And the star was shocked by his recent trip to a food bank in San Francisco, California - because the attendees who go to feed their family were tax-paying workers rather than homeless people.
He adds, "I learned that only 10 per cent of the people at the food bank were actually homeless. And 90 per cent were people who work and play by the rules yet can’t afford to feed their kids. We have to change that." Damon will be joined by actresses Alicia Silverstone and Kerry Washington visiting kids across Florida to explain how important it is for their parents to vote in the upcoming election.

R&B star CIARA has spoken out in support of MADONNA - insisting the pop superstar is strong enough to get through her divorce from GUY RITCHIE.
The pair announced their split earlier this month (Oct08), confirming that their marriage has come to an end after seven-and-a-half years.
According to some reports, Madonna’s desire to adopt another child, her punishing gym routine, and a lack of support for her director husband’s filmmaking career caused irreparable damage to their union.

Soccer ace DAVID BECKHAM has brushed off reports his Hollywood pal TOM CRUISE is trying to convert the sports star and his wife VICTORIA to Scientology.
The Beckhams have become close friends with Cruise and wife Katie Holmes since they moved to the U.S. in 2007.
But the Los Angeles Galaxy star, who was brought up as a Christian, insists that claims Cruise, a devout follower of Scientology, has been attempting to convert them to the religion are false.
He tells Britain’s GQ magazine, "I respect any person’s religion but he’s never pushed anything on to us. Friends don’t do that."

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT judge PIERS MORGAN is convinced his pal GUY RITCHIE’s split from MADONNA was caused by the difference between American and British humour.
The pair announced earlier this month (Oct08) that they are to divorce following seven-and-a-half years of marriage.
And Morgan - who has been friends with the British moviemaker for more than 20 years - insists that the separation was inevitable.

SETH ROGEN’s raunchy new comedy ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO has been banned from several U.S. cinemas - amid fears it may be too crude for viewers.
The Megaplex Theatres in Utah towns Salt Lake City, Ogden, Lehi, and Sandy have decided not to show Rogen’s new movie because of its sex and nudity scenes.
The film centres on two friends who launch an amateur porn studio, and stars Pineapple Express funnyman Rogen and Elizabeth Banks.
But cinema bosses believe the comic romp will be too much for more conservative film fans.
A spokesperson for the chain tells New York gossip column PageSix, "We feel it’s very close to an NC-17 with its graphic nudity and graphic sex." Earlier this month (Oct08), Banks branded America’s movie rating board sexist after they initially slapped an adults-only NC-17 certification on the film. It was later changed to R-rated after studio bosses won an appeal to have it lowered.

LATEST: DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES actor GALE HAROLD is out of intensive care as he continues to recover from a serious motorcycle accident.
The star, 38, was rushed to the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center earlier this month (14Oct08) with a fractured shoulder and swelling on the brain.
He spent almost two weeks under observation in intensive care, but is now thought to be out of danger and is expected to make a full recovery.

Actor-turned-author DENIS LEARY’s new lifestyle book has landed him in hot water again - after he defended his right to use homophobic language in the tome.
The Rescue Me star came under fire during an interview with American gay and lesbian magazine The Advocate, which quizzed him about his forthcoming book, Why We Suck: A Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid.
In the interview, reporter Brandon Voss confronts Leary over a chapter in the book titled Why Matt Damon Is A Giant Fag - asking why Leary deems it appropriate to use the derogatory term.
But Leary insists he didn’t set out to cause offence - blaming his use of controversial language on his Irish Catholic parents.
He explains, "I also have a chapter called, ‘We’d Hate You Even If You Weren’t Black’. I don’t believe in the power of words. My parents came from Ireland, where the c**t is literally a word your mother and father would use to describe the weather or the car: ‘That c**ting car won’t start!’ And I come from a Catholic background where the nuns were always telling you, ‘Don’t do this, don’t say this,’ so any time anyone tells me I shouldn’t say something, my reaction is, ‘Why not?’" Earlier this month (Oct08), Leary came under fire for making controversial comments about children with autism in the book, claiming the parents of autistic children use the brain disorder as an excuse for "laziness".

SIR BOB GELDOF will receive an Honorary Doctorate in Music for his contributions to the rock industry.
The former Boomtown Rats singer will be honoured by the University of East London on Monday (27Oct08).
He receives the award both for his own music career and his campaigning efforts to increase awareness of underprivileged countries through his Live 8 and Live Aid benefit concerts.
A spokesman for the university says the star was chosen to receive the doctorate because of his "unique success in harnessing the power of popular music to raise funds and awareness of key global issues, and changing the lives of people worldwide".
Geldof will attend the ceremony at London’s Barbican Centre to address graduates after he collects his degree.

PIXIES frontman FRANK BLACK has teamed up with an animal rights organisation to campaign against U.S. fast food chain KFC.
The rocker - real name Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV - has signed a petition by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) urging the takeout chain to improve the lives of the chickens used in the restaurant’s food.
The campaign accuses bosses at the fried chicken group of using battery-farmed animals which are raised in inhumane conditions.
And Black is now urging members of the public and his own legion of fans to sign the petition at KentuckyFriedCruelty.com to help raise awareness of the issue.
PETA spokesman Michael McGraw says, "Frank knows that consumers care about animal welfare, and he’s helping to spread the word that KFC stands for cruelty. After all, if KFC executives treated cats or dogs the way they allow KFC’s suppliers to treat chickens, they’d be hit with cruelty-to-animals charges." KFC bosses have also faced the wrath of actress Pamela Anderson, an ardent animal rights activist, who has joined the campaign.

LATEST: JENNIFER HUDSON’s fellow AMERICAN IDOL alumni have expressed their shock at hearing the news of the murders of the star’s mother and brother paying tribute to the Oscar-winner’s devastated family.
Former talent show contenders Diana DeGarmo, Jon Peter Lewis and Camile Velasco have reached out to the star, offering their support to Hudson in her hour of need.
The trio was included in the talent show’s third season final 12 line-up alongside Hudson, who was catapulted to fame after she was eliminated in the show - going on to win an Academy Award for her role in Dreamgirls.
DeGarmo, who finished second that season, couldn’t believe Hudson’s family had been involved in the horrific incident, insisting they were all well liked.
She tells Access Hollywood, "I was completely shocked and stunned when I heard about this tragedy. I know how important Jennifer’s mother and brother were to her.. They were so nice and so pleasant. Jennifer always spoke about her mom, how close they were and how much of a ‘big sister’ role her mom played in her life." And former contestant Velasco describes Hudson’s mum Darnell Donnerson as a "wonderful" woman.
She says, "I met Jennifer’s mom when she came to the set in L.A. and I also went to Jennifer’s home on the South Side of Chicago during the ‘American Idol’ tour and spent time with her mom. She was a great lady, real sweet and a great supporter of Jennifer’s who was happy and glad for her daughter’s success." Lewis, who became close pals with Hudson during her time on the hit show, is devastated about the slayings, because the star had just started to live out her fantasies.
He adds, "She was living her dream. For her to have gone on (from Idol) to be in so many wonderful movies and to have gotten an Oscar and to have a strong record out, and she recently got engaged - she had the whole world before her… everything was fine." Donnerson and her son Jason Hudson, 29, were found dead at their home in Chicago, Illinois on Friday (24Oct08). They had both received fatal gun shot wounds. Hudson has since issued an appeal for the return of her nephew, Julian King, seven, who has been missing since the murders.

Soccer superstar DAVID BECKHAM made a lucky escape in Los Angeles on Friday (24Oct08) when he avoided getting a speeding ticket.
The Los Angeles Galaxy player was driving at high speed in his Porsche 911 when he was pulled over by a traffic cop in Hollywood.

GWEN STEFANI and GAVIN ROSSDALE’s oldest son KINGSTON is slowly adapting to his role as big brother - and is starting to understand he isn’t the only baby in his parents’ life.
The couple welcomed second child Zuma into their family in August (08), but Rossdale insists two year old Kingston is handling the situation well.
He tells People.com, "It’s like, here is this guy, and he’s not leaving.
(Kingston) is getting used to that.
"Obviously, there are moments that he’s bugged out that someone is in his spot with his mum. His mum is great, so I agree with that. I just can’t complain about it. I think it’s just natural. That’s what happens." Rossdale admits that although having two young children can be a handful, they are enjoying every minute of it.
He jokes, "One is one, and two is 10. That’s all I know! It’s going really well. It’s not so bad. We’ve got it down now, you know." And the celebrity couple is already preparing baby Zuma for his first Halloween.
Describing his kids’ costumes, Rossdale adds, "One’s an elephant, and one’s a shark. Zuma’s the shark."

LATEST: Comedian RUSSELL BRAND has apologised for a playing a lewd telephone stunt on actor ANDREW SACHS.
Brand was joined on his BBC Radio 2 programme by British chatshow host Jonathan Ross on 18 October (08), when the funnyman bragged about sleeping with Sachs’ granddaughter.
The pair then made a series of on-air phone calls to the actor, leaving crude voicemail messages suggesting Brand had bedded 23-year-old Georgina on a sofa and a garden swing.
Fawlty Towers star Sachs, who had to cancel an appearance on the show due to unforeseen circumstances, was said to be "deeply upset" and "terribly hurt" by the prank - and now Brand has been forced to apologise for his actions.
On his weekend (25Oct08) show, Brand said he was sorry because "you musn’t swear on someone’s answer phone", before confessing that it was "funny".
BBC bosses claim they are "not aware of receiving a complaint from Mr Sachs".
Ross has refused to comment on the incident.

Supermodel ELLE MACPHERSON is standing by her new man BRIAN BURGESS after details of his shady past as a drug smuggler emerged in the press.
The catwalk beauty, 44, recently began dating 56-year-old Burgess, who now owns a London removals company. It is thought the pair met when he helped her move home.
Their relationship came under scrutiny on Sunday (26Oct08) when it was revealed that Burgess is a convicted drug smuggler, who was deported to his native Britain from Australia in 2000 after serving four years for dealing cocaine.
