Actress KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS abandoned plans to visit a women’s prison to research a new film role, fearing the experience would leave her scarred.
The Brit initially planned to experience life behind bars, to better connect to her imprisoned character in new movie I’ve Loved You So Long.
But she opted to watch documentaries and read up on the experience from the comfort of her home when the film’s director questioned her motives.
She says, "This woman has just come out of prison. My initial instinct was that I must go meet women prisoners because I’ve never been in a prison in my life…
"Suddenly, it dawned on me what would happen if I went and met these women, is the person, Kristin, would be effected by the distress and I would be affected by the pity or anger or disgust. All these things that would get in the way of me being as honest as possible in portraying this character. So I ended up not going."

TOM CRUISE made a shock appearance at U.S
. TV host MATT LAUER’s Friar’s Club Roast in New York on Friday (23Oct08) - three years after the pair clashed in a controversial interview.
Following roast tradition, Cruise mocked the Today show host - his ‘revenge’ after they rowed on air in 2005, when Cruise aggressively defended his opposition to psychiatry and anti-depressive drugs.
The actor insisted he was over the incident, making light of his own public scrutiny: "Matt and I talk two, three, four times a day..

Actor MATT DAMON is determined his three daughters won’t be spoiled by a lavish lifestyle, and plans to take them with him as he carries out charitable work in impoverished parts of the world.
The star has become well-known for his philanthropic efforts in Africa and around the world.
And he wants Isabella, two, two-month-old Gia and step-daughter Alexia, 10, to follow in his footsteps.
He says, "It’s a hard thing to explain to a kid. And it is also unbelievable the way other kids are forced to live.

Actor/director JOHN MALKOVICH has quit his home in France - because he refuses to settle a tax dispute with the country’s government.
The star made France his home for almost 10 years - but a financial mix-up has prompted him to leave until the dispute is settled by French courts.
Malkovich claims he is being forced to pay out more in tax than he made while working in the country - and he’s refusing to hand over the cash.
He says, "I have a little tax dust-up. I was directing a play in Paris, which I was also producing. I probably lost in total 100,000Euros($126,000/GBP80,500).
"As a producer of the play, I made against that a salary of 25,000 Euros ($31,500/GBP20,000). My tax bill was 29,000 Euros ($36,500/GBP23,500).
"It’ll go to court and there will be a trial."

Former basketball player and coach ISIAH THOMAS is recovering in a New York state hospital after suffering a mystery "overdose".
Police have confirmed they were called to the 47-year-old’s home at midnight on Thursday (23Oct08), and that an ambulance was dispatched to take Thomas to a nearby clinic.
A police spokesperson tells Usmagazine.com, "An ambulance was called to his residence around midnight, and a party was transported to White Plains Hospital. It was a party from his residence. It was ruled an overdose." Officials have refused to disclose if drugs or alcohol were involved - but sources tell CBS that he overdosed on sleeping pills.
Thomas, voted one of the top 50 NBA (National Basketball Association) players of all-time, was fired from his job as coach of the New York Knicks in April (08), after the team suffered an extended slump in form.

Oscar-winning actress JENNIFER HUDSON’s mother and brother have been found shot dead in their Chicago, Illinois home, according to reports.
The shooting took place on the south side of the city at 2.44pm (local time) on Friday (24Oct08).
Police have yet to verify the identity of the victims, a Chicago Police Department spokesperson only revealing they are "believed to be related to Hudson".
But Willie Davis, the pastor of the family’s church, has confirmed the Dreamgirls star’s mum, 57-year-old Darnell Hudson Donnerson, was one of the victims, reports network CBS’ Chicago affiliate. The other body belongs to a man, believed to be Jason Hudson.
Both victims were found in the house - which is listed under Darnell Donnerson’s name - by a man reported to be Hudson’s cousin.
TMZ.com is also reporting that police are searching for a seven-year-old boy, believed to be Hudson’s nephew Jason King, who may have been taken from the scene.
Hudson thanked her mother, brother and nephew in the sleeve-notes of her self-titled debut album, which was released just last month (Sep08).
After thanking God, she wrote, “Next, of course, is u my mommy DARNELL AKA DOLL…thank u for instilling in me that I could do anything I put my mind to and teaching me to always put God first. Thank you for loving me no matter what." She added, “To the original JHUD’s, my big bro and sis JASON and JULIA, I love you so much. Thank you both for rooting me on and supporting me like nobody else. Also for believing in me and never letting me settle for just ok but the best. Because of u, I don’t believe in limits. LIL’ JULIAN KING my lil’ nephew, I love u, baby.” Representatives for the 27-year-old star, who only recently announced her engagement to boyfriend David Otunga, have yet to respond to requests for a comment.

PEARL JAM rocker EDDIE VEDDER is punishing himself with a strict diet and detox regime to cleanse himself after ending the band’s latest tour.
Vedder is quitting cigarettes, drinking just water, and eating just salt and pepper, in a bid to rid his body of all the toxins he picked up during the long road trip that ended in New York in June (08).
During a chat with actor Josh Brolin in November’s (08) Interview magazine, Vedder says, "It’s been a long couple of years, being on the road a lot. I’m ready to clean up my act. I just finished touring, and I’m on a detox thing.
It’s a heavy detox, so nothing in my belly except water, salt and cayenne pepper.
"It also means I’m not smoking." And the detox is having a bizarre effect on his body: "This is four days in.

Country rocker BRAD PAISLEY discovered his wife was pregnant with the couple’s second child when their 20-month-old son handed him a positive pregnancy test.
Paisley’s wife Kimberly gave little Huck the test and told him to wake up his dad with it.
The star revealed on Tennessee radio show, GAC Nights: Live From Nashville, "My son wakes me up every day now and he brings a book and gets in bed.
"He came around and (Kimberly) said, ‘Here, give this to Daddy.’ And I saw him walk up with a pregnancy test and hand it to me." The new addition to the Paisley family is expected next April (09).

Soul superstar PRINCE was determined to complete his 21-date London residency last summer (07), because people kept trying to talk him out of attempting ‘the impossible’.
The Purple Rain singer sold out all gigs on the tour at the capital’s O2 Arena - a feat that surprised even the star himself.
He says, "This was a landmark event. No one believed that it would do what it did. …Everyone tried to talk me out of it.
"I couldn’t have sold out 21 nights in London in the peak of my career; it would have been an impossibility." And Prince hopes all artists will one day get the chance to do the same.
He adds, "I look forward to these years where everything is just open sky. I wish this for every artist: freedom."

Country rocker TIM McGRAW will honour his late baseball star dad by opening the third game of the 2008 World Series on Saturday (25Oct08).
McGraw will walk the ball to the pitcher’s mound at Philadelphia’s Citizen’s Bank Park to kick of the Tampa Bay Rays’ game against the Philadelphia Phillies, the team his dad Tug McGraw helped win the World Series in 1980.
McGraw senior died of cancer in 2004.

American rockers FALL OUT BOY are attempting to set a new world record - by taping the most radio interviews in a day.
Bandmembers Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump will kick off their talkathon on 31 October (08) in Los Angeles at 3am (local time) - to promote their new album Folie A Deux, which is due out in December (08).
They have to achieve a jaw-aching 58 interviews in 24 hours to beat the current Guinness World Record of 57, completed in May 2008, by unreported interviewees.

The man who attacked OASIS rocker NOEL GALLAGHER onstage in Canada last month (Sep08) will have to wait to discover his fate - after his case was put back until next month (Nov08).
Gallagher was left with three broken ribs after 47-year-old Daniel Sullivan stormed the stage at the Virgin Festival in Toronto on 7 September and pushed him onto monitor speakers.
The rocker was hospitalised after the incident and his injuries forced the band to prematurely end their North American tour.
Sullivan was charged with assault, and ordered to appear in court in Toronto on Friday (24Oct08).
At Friday’s hearing, the case was adjourned until 25 November (08).
