Hollywood legend AL PACINO gave aspiring actors some sound advice after picking up a prestigious acting award at the third annual Rome Film Festival on Wednesday (22Oct08).
The Oscar winner attended the Italian event to collect the Marcus Aurelius Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the festival’s tribute to the Actors Studio of New York - a theatre workshop of which Pacino is a board member.
The star was praised by Rome’s mayor Gianni Alemanno for representing Italian-Americans throughout his film career.
He told reporters, "Al Pacino in our image is a star who represents the bridge between Italy and America in a very strong way, the link of brotherhood that there is between the two populations." And the Scarface star went on to thrill movie fans by giving an impromptu coaching session on how to become a successful actor.
He told the eager crowd, "Learn your words, and how to rehearse, and then rehearse. My style is to allow the unconscious to be free, so you don’t censor yourself." A number of the actor’s movies will be screened at the event - apart from his recent collaboration with Robert De Niro, Righteous Kill, which was withdrawn from the festival for undisclosed reasons.

COLDPLAY star JONNY BUCKLAND would happily quit the band - to help out his favourite soccer team.
The guitarist admits he would dump the charttoppers in favour of playing for struggling British team Tottenham Hotspur FC if given the chance.

Argentinean rocker CHARLY GARCIA has been released from hospital - on the strict condition he will continue to seek professional help to beat his drug and alcohol demons.
The 56-year-old was released from the Avril clinic in Buenos Aires on Tuesday (21Oct08) after spending three months under a rehabilitation program.
A judge has permitted the star to leave the program as long as he continues to commit to his rehab process.
The rocker has returned to his home outside of the Argentinean capital to continue his recovery, according to website PeopleEnEspanol.com.
Garcia was hospitalised in June (08) after allegedly trashing a hotel room in an intoxicated state following a reported altercation with a bandmate.

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE star GERARD WAY has plans to transform his award-winning comic strip into a movie.
The rocker, 31, published his first set of comics when he was just 16 and relaunched his career as an author last year (07) by releasing The Umbrella Academy.
Way triumphed at the comic publishing industry’s top prize ceremony - the Eisner Awards - in July (08) taking home the gong for Best Limited Series.
And the success of the graphic novels, which follow the adventures of a family of superheroes, has caught the eye of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuaron.
But Way isn’t getting his hopes up about the possible big-screen venture just yet, even though he is adamant his stories are perfect for a movie.
He tells Sci-Fi magazine SFX, "He’s (Cuaron) the only director who has the material at the moment. If we get the right people in place, it could be really amazing, but I’m trying not to think about it too much. I’m keeping my head focused on the comics.
"I would prefer people to read the comic first as a point of reference before any film comes out. But the first story is really compact with a beginning, a middle and an end so you could easily make that into a film."

NAOMI CAMPBELL has hit out at rumours she is expecting her first child with billionaire lover VLADISLAV DORONIN.

Actor EDWARD NORTON has dismissed rumours he is to reunite with BRAD PITT in a musical version of their hit film FIGHT CLUB - because the Hollywood star can’t sing.
Norton insists that neither himself nor Pitt, his co-star in the 1999 movie, will be involved in a stage version of the picture - which is rumoured to feature music by Nine Inch Nails star Trent Reznor.
And Norton puts his reasoning down to his fellow actor’s limited musical ability.
He tells MSNBC.com, "This (rumour) has been floating around for a while. I’ve seen different notions of it. I doubt it’ll be me and Brad.
"I know Brad can’t sing. Reznor would be about the right vibe for it, I guess.”

BRITNEY SPEARS was too "fragile" to appear in front of jurors deciding her fate in her recent driving license trial, according to her defence lawyer.
The Toxic star was charged with failure to produce a valid California license following a car crash in the state last year (07), but the case was declared a mistrial on Tuesday (21Oct08) after a jury failed to reach a unanimous decision.
The judge was forced to dismiss any criminal charges against the singer as jurors deadlocked - with two members voting guilty, and 10 not guilty.
But despite the relative victory, Spears’ lawyer Michael Flanagan has revealed how the star pleaded with him to excuse her from making a court appearance - and insists she wasn’t "strong" enough to cope with the pressure.
Flanagan recalls how Spears told him: "I can’t face all those people. I don’t want to deal with all the people." He adds, "She is not very strong. She is still very fragile. I had to explain things to her." The comments come as the star embarks on a campaign to revive her career and put her January (08) public meltdown behind her.
Spears’ new album, Circus, is due for release in December (08) amid rumours of a possible world tour.

MARY J. BLIGE and MELISSA ETHERIDGE have helped raise money to fight a ban on gay marriage in California - by singing at a star-studded gala.
Blige and Etheridge both took to the stage at billionaire Ron Burkle’s Beverly Hills, California, estate on Tuesday (21Oct08) night in front of an audience of celebrities including Barbra Streisand, James Brolin and Rob Reiner.
Blige gave a rousing rendition of U2’s One, while Etheridge sang the appropriately titled Wedding Bell Blues, according to the New York Daily News.
The fundraiser made more than $3.9 million (£2.41 million) to help fight the Proposition 8 bill - a high-level state vote in the upcoming November (08) elections to make same-sex marriages constitutionally illegal in California.

Hollywood actress LINDSAY LOHAN was reportedly left cringing when a comedy scene in UGLY BETTY went wrong - and saw her standing onset in her underwear.
The Mean Girls star - who makes a guest appearance in four installments of the hit TV series - is said to have suffered a humiliating incident during the filming of an episode titled Granny Pants.
The scene reportedly required America Ferrera’s character, Betty, to pull down the trousers of her high school nemesis - played by Lohan. But during rehearsals, Ferrera is said to have taken Lohan by surprise by removing her trousers without prior warning.
A source tells New York Post gossip column PageSix, "She was wearing a G-string. And it was America’s fault. They were rehearsing the scene and America wasn’t supposed to pull Lindsay’s pants down - but she did. Lindsay was so embarrassed, she started crying."

LINDSAY LOHAN has had her stint on hit TV show UGLY BETTY cut from six episodes to four - amid rumours of tensions onset.
The Mean Girls star has been accused of disrupting filming with her diva antics and of feuding with her co-star America Ferrera.
A source tells New York Post gossip column PageSix, "It was a mess. Lindsay would show up every day with an entourage of people. She smoked 24/7, and after she left, they had to repaint her dressing room it was such a mess.
"(And she) refused to go on set until America was there - it was a power play." Lohan’s representative has confirmed the actress’ run on the show has been shortened - but insists the decision was an amicable one.
The spokesperson says, "Lindsay was scheduled for six episodes and is appearing in four but had a lovely time." Ferrera’s representative has also played down reports of ill feeling between the pair: "America is grateful to have had her on the show and thinks everyone should tune in to see how great the episodes are."

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL star MONIQUE COLEMAN harbours dreams of playing late TLC rapper LISA ‘LEFT EYE’ LOPES in a biopic of the tragic star’s life.
The singer/actress, who plays Vanessa Hudgens’ brainy best pal in the teen franchise, is a huge fan of Lopes and hopes to bring her eventful life to the big-screen.
Lopes died from severe head injuries in 2002 following a horrific car crash in La Ceiba, Honduras. She was 30.
And Coleman wants to pay homage to the star - and is adamant she can portray the same raw talent that catapulted Lopes to stardom.

GOSSIP GIRL star BLAKE LIVELY is facing a small court lawsuit over allegations she failed to pay a dressmaker for alteration work.
The actress is accused of not paying Brooklyn, New York-based tailor Angela Bilotti $500 (£312) for work done to a dress she wore to the Teen Choice Awards earlier this year (08).
According to TMZ.com, the star offered to walk to an ATM cash machine to withdraw payment, but was told "not to worry" by Bilotti.
Bilotti allegedly claims she has tried to contact the star over the reportedly unpaid sum, but her calls have not been returned.
However Lively’s representative tells TMZ.com that the tailor incorrectly fitted the dress to the star’s requirements and agreed for the actress to pay half the original amount.

GOSSIP GIRL star TAYLOR MOMSEN will be back onset within days after winning her battle with a "life-threatening throat infection".
The 15-year-old actress was admitted to a medical facility in Los Angeles on Sunday (19Oct08), where she was treated for the unspecified condition.
Her doctor, Shawn Nasseri, tells UsWeekly.com, "She has been hospitalised for a severe, potentially life-threatening throat infection since Sunday. After aggressive antibiotics and medications, she is expected to make a full recovery in the next three to five days." The teenager was released from hospital on Wednesday (22Oct08) and is now recuperating at home, according to People.com.
And Gossip Girl bosses insist she will be back at work onset in New York by the end of the week (ends26Oct08).
A statement from the show’s CW network says, "Taylor Momsen is a beloved member of our Gossip Girl cast and we are happy to report she is on the road to a speedy recovery. We all look forward to her planned return to work on Friday."
