STEVE CARELL has officially made it onto the Hollywood A-list - he has signed a multi-million dollar three-movie deal with studio Warner Bros.
Following the huge commercial success of his summer (08) movie Get Smart, bosses at the studio have locked him down for three more films - a deal that doesn’t include further secret agent sequels.
Carell says of the deal, "My idea was to partner with friends of mine, people I trusted, with whom I share a certain sensibility. I have some ideas for films, but I’ve gotten to know so many people who are funny, talented and fertile with ideas that I’m confident this very strong base of friendships will lead to something." Get Smart has grossed more than $225.8 million (£122 million) worldwide to date.

Actor ADRIEN BRODY wants to settle down and start a family after finding his dream home in the New York countryside.
The Pianist star, 35, has been dating Spanish actress Elsa Pataky for two years after they met in Madrid, Spain.
They have since made a movie together, Dario Argento’s crime thriller Giallo, and set up home after Brody bought a 19th century castle in upstate New York as a surprise birthday present for Pataky last year (07).
And he is now keen for their romance to develop further.
He says, "She has an incredibly pure spirit. There are lots of beautiful women in the world, but it is very difficult to imagine someone with the physical beauty that Elsa possesses but who also has the same beautiful soul." When asked whether the couple is planning to wed, he adds, "Hopefully.
Sometimes, life helps you decide," before musing, "This would be a remarkable place for a child to grow up in."

A stack of late Belgian singer JACQUES BREL’s belongings will be sold at auction in Paris, France on Wednesday (08Oct08).
The sale will take place a day before the 30th anniversary of Brel’s death from lung cancer, despite protests from his family, who claim they have tried to buy the memorabilia privately.
The 94 items going under the hammer include records, notebooks, guitars, childhood photographs and his pilot’s licence.
The auction is expected to fetch up to $640,000 (470,000 Euros/£345,000).
Most of the items are thought to have been recovered from a French home Brel shared with his mistress Silvie Riget.

EMINEM has been voted the Best Rapper Alive in a new poll by American magazine Vibe.
The Without Me hitmaker, who has not released a new album since 2004’s Encore, was named number one by readers in an online survey.
Eminem beat Jay-Z to the title in the final round of voting with 69 per cent - but he doesn’t think any single rapper deserves the title.
In a statement released on Tuesday (07Oct08), he says, "It’s obviously an honour to have won the fans’ support by being voted the Best Rapper Alive.
"I don’t think that there is any one rapper that is simply the best, though.
Everyone who was in consideration and many others are the best at certain things, and at what they do. But since Vibe’s offering the distinction, hell yeah, I’ll accept!" Other contenders for the accolade included Nas, Kanye West, T.I. and Rick Ross.

Rap superstar JAY-Z had to abandon a free concert in support of U.S.
presidential hopeful BARACK OBAMA on Sunday (05Oct08) after suffering from a throat illness.
The 99 Problems hitmaker, real name Shawn Carter, hoped to encourage young people to vote for the Democrat in the November (08) elections by holding two free gigs.
He played Detroit, Michigan on Saturday (04Oct08) with no problems - but left fans at Sunday’s show in Miami, Florida disappointed when the event was cancelled at the last minute.
Jay-Z had reportedly been advised by doctors not to go ahead with the concert because of his ailment, but the star has yet to release a statement explaining the details of his illness.

MILEY CYRUS’ ‘guy pal’ JUSTIN GASTON has been given the seal of approval by her protective father BILLY RAY.
The 15-year-old has been linked to 20-year-old Gaston - a former contestant on reality TV show Nashville Star - for several weeks, and he joined her dad onstage to perform at Miley’s Disneyland party on Sunday (05Oct08).
All parties have denied Gaston is romancing the underage star - but he has won over Billy Ray.
He tells Access Hollywood, "He actually reminds me a lot of myself when I was 20-years-old and I was living and searching for the dream.
"He’s got a great heart and soul, and a lot of determination. I think that’s the true measure of a man, is when you measure his heart."

Rockers WEEZER have set five new world records with the video for their forthcoming single TROUBLEMAKER.
The band broke the existing achievements for Largest Air Guitar Ensemble, Largest Game of Dodgeball, Longest Guitar Hero World Tour Marathon, Most People in a Custard Pie Fight, and Most People Riding on a Skateboard while shooting the video in Los Angeles on 21 August (08).
And their efforts have won them recognition in the Guinness World Records, after official Stuart Claxton witnessed their activities firsthand.
However, Weezer are hoping to add a sixth record to their list - for World’s Smallest Drum Kit in a Video, after bandmember Pat Wilson showed off his skills on the instrument in the promo.

Late great soul man ISAAC HAYES was given a special tribute at the 2008 VH1 Hip-Hop Honors on Monday (06Oct08) with performances by MOS DEF, ESTELLE, SCARFACE and PUBLIC ENEMY stars CHUCK D and FLAVOR FLAV.
The soul icon died in August (08), but Hayes - whose music is frequently sampled by rappers - was fondly remembered by the hip-hop community at the annual ceremony.
He was honoured alongside rap pioneers De La Soul, Too Short, Cypress Hill, Naughty By Nature and Slick Rick at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.
Other performers on the night included OutKast star Big Boi and Wyclef Jean, while Gym Class Heroes teamed up with Fat Joe, Jim Jones and Mack 10 for their musical tribute to Cypress Hill.
The 2008 honorees made up the fifth class of artists to be saluted for their achievements - previous inductees include Snoop Dogg, Run-DMC, Rakim and the Wu-Tang Clan.

AMY WINEHOUSE’s mother has dismissed comments the star is a bad influence on her young goddaughter - insisting the troubled singer wants to protect the 12-year-old.
The Back to Black hitmaker tried to boost her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield’s future singing career by allowing her to perform alongside her at the Prince’s Trust End of the Summer Ball in London last month (Sep08).
But the Grammy-winner came under fire from critics who suggested the star’s chaotic life is no place for a young, impressionable girl.
However, Winehouse’s mum Janis has jumped to defend her daughter’s relationship with Bromfield, claiming the star is intent on shielding her from the same destructive temptations she herself has faced.
Janis tells Britain’s Closer magazine, "Amy takes Dionne very seriously.
She’s a very sweet girl and Amy has a lot of hope for Dionne’s future.
"I think she sees some of herself in Dionne, which is why she wants to look out for her."

AMY WINEHOUSE’s distressed mum JANIS has confessed her shock at pictures of the singer’s latest shambolic public appearance.
The Rehab hitmaker attended the Prince’s Trust End of Summer Ball bash in London late last month (Sep08) and stunned revellers with her erratic behaviour and frighteningly dishevelled appearance.
Winehouse was incoherent throughout the bash, and faced police questioning after she reportedly lashed out at a female dancer when asked to pose for a photo.
And Janis Winehouse admits she was shocked at her daughter’s appearance.
She tells Britain’s Closer magazine, "It is hard seeing pictures of her looking like that. She’s very thin and frail. But as her mother she probably looks worse to me.
"Amy’s living the rock-chick lifestyle. I don’t think it’s a choice for her any more, though - it rules her." And Janis has threatened to report her daughter’s drug dealers to police because they are standing in the way of her recovery.
She adds, "She’s my little girl and is very vulnerable. If I came across any of these people (drug dealers) I’d tell them where to go. And I’d call the police.
"Amy has her dad and me looking out for her and that’s something a lot of celebrities don’t have. But we can’t force her into anything. She has to want to do it (rehab) or it will be hopeless. I know she can beat it, she just has to make the call."

ANGELINA JOLIE has credited the memory of her late mother MARCHELINE BERTRAND with giving her the confidence to take on her role in new film THE CHANGELING.
The devoted mother-of-six plays a woman desperate to be reunited with her kidnapped son in the upcoming Clint Eastwood film, inspired by a real-life story.
And Jolie admits her character’s strength grew from the close relationship she shared with her own mother, actress Bertrand, before her death in January 2007.
She tells the New York Daily News, "My mother would fight that hard for her children. (The role made me) confront my worst fear. It made me feel closer to my kids and grateful every night just to know where they are and that they’re healthy. Making the phone call (in the film), saying that my kid was kidnapped, was difficult. I don’t even like saying it right now."

LATEST: The Iranian actress who appears in RUSSELL CROWE and LEONARDO DiCAPRIO’s new movie BODY OF LIES is refusing to return to her homeland because she fears she will be exiled over her role in the film.
Golshifteh Farahani was detained by authorities in her homeland in August (08) after making plans to visit Hollywood for a series of meetings with directors and casting agents. They also confiscated her passport.
State news agency officials at IRNA claimed the 25-year-old did not obtain the necessary permit from the ministry of culture and Islamic guidance in order to appear in the U.S. movie.
According to the New York Daily News, Farahani has since had her passport returned to her, although Islamic officials are continuing their investigation into whether she broke the law by making the film without permission.
And she has been living in France with her husband since the incident, uncertain if the Iranian government will seize her documents upon her return to the country.
She tells the newspaper: "I’m on trial. I’m totally in love with Iran. I have family there. But now, if they want to see me, they have to leave…
"I had a lot of problems because of this movie. (Iranian officials) took my passport. The intelligence service interrogated me several times. In the end, the judge said, ‘We have to see the movie and then decide what we’re going to do with you.’" Farahani - who plays DiCaprio’s love interest in the film - is the first Iranian-based actress to appear in a Hollywood film since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Former SPICE GIRL EMMA BUNTON harbours dreams of starring in her own TV show.
The singer got a taste of a TV career last month (Sep08) when she acted as an assistant to pop star Dannii Minogue on hit U.K. talent contest The X Factor.
Bunton helped the Aussie judge choose this year’s (08) hopefuls to go through to the show’s live finals.
But she admits she finds filming for TV more terrifying than performing to a live crowd - because she doesn’t have her former bandmates to support her.
She tells Britain’s Closer magazine, "I love doing TV, you get such an adrenaline rush. I’d like my own show one day.
"But it’s far more scary than doing a Spice Girls gig - I don’t have my best friends next to me."

. presidential hopefuls BARACK OBAMA and JOHN McCAIN to pledge an end to America’s dependence on foreign oil.
The environmentally-friendly Titanic star has called for the senators to push for increased use of wind power and solar energy, regardless of who wins the race to the White House next month (Nov08).
And he insists America has a "moral and patriotic" duty to invest in renewable energy sources to halt the effects of climate change.
DiCaprio tells People.com, "The most critical thing for the new administration is to implement an environmental policy that automatically integrates environmental issues we’re all concerned about in our everyday lives

Hollywood couple REESE WITHERSPOON and JAKE GYLLENHAAL are reportedly househunting in London.
The Rendition co-stars, who have been dating since last year (07), are said to have been viewing a number of properties, both apartments and townhouses, in the upmarket area of Mayfair.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper, Witherspoon is particularly keen on finding a home safe enough for her two young children, from her marriage to actor Ryan Phillippe.
A real estate source tells the publication, "Reese was extremely concerned about security issues.
"She seemed to particularly like places where they could enter and exit not directly onto the street. That’s not always an easy thing in Central London, especially Mayfair. But we were able to come up with a couple of places both she and Jake seemed to like." Gyllenhaal is currently in the U.K. filming scenes for his new movie Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Comedienne SARAH SILVERMAN has stepped into the U.S. political arena, urging young Jewish citizens to encourage their grandparents to vote for presidential hopeful BARACK OBAMA.
Silverman stars in the provocative comedy sketch entitled The Great Schlep, reflecting on her own Jewish sensibility to relate to young voters, hoping their influence will transcend to older generations in the swing state of Florida.
Silverman praises the Democratic presidential candidate in the clip, calling him "the goodest (sic) person we’ve ever had as a presidential choice".
In the satire, she adds: "If Barack Obama doesn’t become the next president of the United States, I’m going to blame the Jews." And the 37-year-old is defending her attempt to bridge the gap between the generations, telling the New York Times, "The people that vote there are the elderly Jews, and they’re not voting Obama because his name is scary. But who has more power with them than their grandchildren?"

German filmmaker WERNER HERZOG will be honoured with a career achievement award by the International Documentary Association at a ceremony in Los Angeles in December (08).
Herzog is recognised for his work on factual movies Grizzly Man, Little Dieter Needs to Fly and The White Diamond.
He says of the accolade, "Documentary filmmaking is called upon to find new answers. In these of redefinition, it is a particular honour for me to receive the award." Last year’s (07) prize was won by Michael Moore.

American actress IRENE DAILEY has died. She was 88.
Dailey, best known for her work on Broadway and daytime television, passed away on 24 September (08) after a battle with colon cancer.
Among the actress’ most memorable roles were as matriarch Nettie Cleary in the 1964 Tony Award-winning drama The Subject Was Roses and as Liz Matthews in 1974’s U.S. TV series Another World. That role won her the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in 1979.
In 1960, Dailey took to the London stage, winning over audiences and drawing rave reviews from critics for her lead role in Tomorrow - With Pictures.
Her film credits include 1968’s No Way to Treat a Lady and 1970s films Five Easy Pieces, The Grissom Gang and The Amityville Horror. She also enjoyed screen time in 1960s U.S. TV series The Twilight Zone and crime-mystery soap opera The Edge of Night.
Dailey’s award-winning experience parlayed into her role as acting teacher at the Herbert Berghof Studio in New York, prompting the actress to later open her own school, the School of the Actors Company.
