LEONA LEWIS is increasingly worried about crime in England’s capital, after several of her friends were robbed in the street.
The Bleeding Love hitmaker grew up in the East London borough of Hackney, which has seen a rise in knife crime in recent years.
And Lewis blames the problem on the dwindling number of activity centres to keep youngsters off the streets.
She says, "So many of my friends have been mugged or been involved in incidents in one way or another. The problem is complicated. My parents both work within that youth field. A few years ago all these youth clubs were shut down in Hackney. It means you have kids out on the street with nowhere to go and nothing to do, and it’s a recipe for trouble." But Lewis is keen to stay close to her roots, insisting there is nowhere she would rather live.
She adds, "We need to think about building new facilities. It’s something I’d love to get involved with. I actually love Hackney. I don’t want to see it get worse and worse. When the time came for me to get my own place, I couldn’t think of anywhere I’d rather be."

Rockers THE KILLS have been left baffled after their tourbus and driver mysteriously disappeared midway through their current U.S. tour.
The band, which includes Kate Moss’ ex-boyfriend Jamie Hince, last saw the vehicle on 26 September (08) in Los Angeles before it vanished, along with the driver and all of their luggage.
The duo - who have been supporting The Raconteurs on the string of live dates - have called in officers from the Federal Bureau Of Investigation (FBI) in a bid to trace the bus.
Guitarist/singer Alison Mosshart says, "It is thought that the driver has committed grand theft auto or that he is in some kind of trouble.
"The bus and driver were last seen on the morning of September 26 at a Prevost dealership in Los Angeles. The driver got some new tyres and was set to head to Austin, Texas to meet up with us. His phone has been off since that afternoon.
"Federal investigators and police are searching for the bus and driver throughout the U.S. and Mexico. We are currently travelling to Nashville (Tennessee) and have no luggage or belongings." Mosshart has also made an appeal for the return of the vehicle, asking anyone who sees a black Prevost tour bus with Tennessee licence plates reading 0305 EA to call the U.S. police.

Pop star LEONA LEWIS has blasted members of her family who turned to crime because she saw the misery it caused for victims.
The Bleeding Love hitmaker, who has 60 cousins in her extended family, praises her parents for bringing her up properly - and not letting her mix with relatives who have been to jail.
The singer’s cousin led a gang that raped an Australian tourist in 1996, and an uncle of hers went to prison for robbery.
She says, "There are bad people in my family. But we didn’t really mix with them. Bad things have happened and I guess if you grow up like that it’s not so hard to make the wrong choices.
"But I never thought like that. I saw the pain that someone else’s badness caused for other people. You have to think and make your own mind up.
"It shouldn’t be this thing that you grow up in a bad area and so therefore you have to turn out a certain way. I guess I was lucky to have parents who were determined to bring up their children properly. It was very important in our family that we behaved well and worked hard."

British rockers DIRTY PRETTY THINGS have split up after three years together.
The band, formed in 2005 following the break-up of frontman Carl Barat’s previous group The Libertines, has announced its decision to part ways to allow the group’s members to pursue their own projects.
Barat has confirmed the news in a statement to NME.com - but insists he and drummer Gary Powell will not be reforming The Libertines, which broke up following the dismissal of junkie rocker Pete Doherty.
Barat says, "It is with some sadness we announce the farewell of the Dirty Pretty Things. It’s been a glorious three years which we all would gladly live out again, but it is time for us to try new things (not The Libertines).
"We are reluctant to give up touring but will give the last waltz everything.
We have and are determined to go out as we came in, after which we all have other ventures to be getting on with and splendid future plans. Heartfelt thanks to all who made it what it was, much love and we’ll see you on the road."

Disney star DEMI LOVATO has laughed off rumours of a feud with teen superstar MILEY CYRUS, insisting she’s just happy the HANNAH MONTANA star knows who she is.
Cyrus sent gossips into a spin this summer (Jul08) when she poked fun at Lovato and her pal Selena Gomez in an online video.
The mocking montage led many to speculate that Cyrus’ actions were prompted by reports her ex-boyfriend Nick Jonas is now dating Gomez - claims the pair has denied.
Cyrus has since apologised for her actions - and Lovato insists there are no hard feelings between the two stars.
In fact, Lovato has revealed Cyrus has even given her tips on how to deal with life in the spotlight.
She tells Entertainment Weekly, "I really don’t know Miley that well. We didn’t take offense or think it was a negative or a positive. It was just like, OK, cool, Hannah Montana knows who I am!’ "She gave me advice on publicity and making it big, and she was like, ‘I hope you’re very successful’.'’

A German artist purporting to be in possession of KURT COBAIN’s ashes is threatening to smoke them as part of a morbid art exhibition.
The late Nirvana frontman’s cremated remains were stolen from his widow Courtney Love in May (08) and now Natascha Stellmach is claiming to have "acquired" the ashes.
In a statement announcing her find, Berlin-based Stellmach has also detailed her plans to smoke the ashes as part of the forthcoming Set Me Free exhibition at the city’s Wagner + Partner gallery on 11 October (08).
However, the artist is refusing to say how she came to be in possession of the remains, telling Artworld magazine, "That’s confidential and kind of magic.
They came to me. And I am setting him free."

KIEFER SUTHERLAND fears fans of his TV series 24 will have to wait several years for a big screen adaptation of the hit show.
The actor admits a movie version of the Emmy-winning series won’t get the green light until the TV show has been wrapped up.
He says, "It is hard enough to write the show. So we all agreed that for the writers and their sanity, we wouldn’t approach doing a film without them, so we would wait until the show is finished. And then we would do a film. I think it’s a couple of years off." Sutherland will next appear in a two-hour stand-alone prequel of 24 called Exile, which will air in the U.S. in November (08) before the new seventh series of the show hits TV screens in January (09).
And the star admits the project made the show’s writers keen to explore the possibility of a film.
He adds, "It was really exciting doing the prequel. I think (the writers) got a taste of how nice it would be to write a two hour piece that actually had an ending instead of having to write a 24 hour piece that doesn’t have an ending.
They might have seen the light. So you never know, maybe a film will be sooner."

Hollywood actor GEORGE CLOONEY has no regrets over his appearance as comic book hero BATMAN - insisting the poorly-received movie shot him to superstardom.
The former ER star landed the lead role in 1997’s Batman & Robin - and despite the movie’s commercial success, it was universally panned by critics.
But Clooney insists that even though he is embarrassed by his poor performance in the movie, he is adamant playing the caped crusader helped raise his profile in the acting world.
He says, "I don’t regret anything. With hindsight it’s easy to look back at Batman and go, ‘Woah! that was really s**t, and I was really bad in it’.
"The truth is, Batman is still the biggest break I ever had. It changed my career. I wouldn’t be doing this now if it hadn’t been for Batman."

Hollywood actor LEONARDO DiCAPRIO wants to get married - because he is keen to live a normal life.
The Titanic star, 33, is sick of travelling the world and living on movie sets and confesses he would like to settle down and start a family to make him feel more grounded.
He tells Parade magazine, "What I definitely feel a need for is to make my life about more than just my career.
"Just last night I was thinking to myself how little of my life has been lived normally and not spent on some far-off movie location. I want to get married and have children. In saying that, I realise I am contradicting everything I’ve said before. I absolutely believe in marriage." WEEDS star MARY-LOUISE PARKER has heaped praise on her onscreen offspring HUNTER PARRISH - confessing she hopes her real-life son grows up like him.
Parker has a four-year-old son, William, with former partner Billy Crudup, and adopted her daughter Ash last year (Sep07).
And the actress is hoping her children inherit the attributes of her onscreen son.
She tells USA Today newspaper, "Hunter is friendly and positive, Hunter wants harmony. I want my son to be like Hunter. He’s just good, and it’s not fake or artificial." Parker has also welcomed Parrish into her off-screen family, inviting him to spend annual holidays at her home.
She adds, "He’s a part of my life. We text each other. He spent Thanksgiving at my house, he comes every year. My daughter goes to the set, and the first thing she says on set is ‘Hunter’. She’s looking for Hunter."

Funnyman SIMON PEGG has hit out at fellow comedian RICKY GERVAIS for criticising the British film industry.
Pegg slammed The Office star, who has had huge success in America with the comedy series, after he declared there had been no decent films to come out of the U.K. in almost 60 years.
Pegg says, "He (Gervais) says a lot of things, that man. He said there had been no good British films since 1950. What an idiot. If you go to Los Angeles, you can get sucked into that." And Pegg also made a jibe about Gervais’ weight, insisting people living in LA become either thin or fat.
He adds, "He’s one of the fat people in Los Angeles, yes."

British actress EMMA THOMPSON has hit out at U.S. critics who panned her new movie BRIDESHEAD REVISITED - insisting they are too prudish to enjoy the saucy tale.
The film, based on Evelyn Waugh’s 1945 novel of the same name, attracted a string of damning reviews in America following its release there at the weekend (27-28Sep08).
The New York Times branded it a "lazy, complacent film which takes the novel’s name in vain," while the Washington Post claimed it "does not hold up the integrity of the book".
But Thompson has hit back at the bad reviews, putting the negative reaction down to most Americans not being ready to accept challenging films.
She says, "What was it that they didn’t like? The Catholicism and the sex?" Thompson also admits the strict moral climate in the U.S. is likely to get worse if Republican presidential candidate John McCain triumphs at the forthcoming November (08) election.
She adds, "The Americans are going to have to cope with that."

LATEST: Asian film star EDISON CHEN has refused to testify at the trial of a man accused of distributing explicit pictures of the actor.
The Hong Kong-based star was at the centre of a scandal earlier this year (08) when a tape of him engaging in sexual acts with a string of different women hit the internet.
The video, which Hong Kong Police say captures 1,300 private shots of Chen with at least half a dozen women, was reported to have been copied by staff at a computer shop when Chen put a faulty laptop in for repair.
And now the trial of computer technician Sze Ho-Chun has stalled after Chen refused to return from the United States to give evidence.
Ho-Chun was arrested in his computer store and pleaded not guilty to one count of obtaining access to a computer with a view of making dishonest gain for himself or another.
Prosecutors have now applied to a higher court in the country, seeking permission to obtain testimony from Chen while he is abroad.

LATEST: Fans of comic book hero SUPERMAN have succeeded in their bid to save the house where the legendary character was first created.
Bestselling author Brad Meltzer visited Superman creator Jerry Siegel’s former home in Cleveland, Ohio while researching his new novel, Book of Lies, and was disappointed to find the building in a state of severe disrepair.
He subsequently launched a campaign to raise money to rebuild the house teaming up with fellow writers, comic book creators and famous friends including Superman director Richard Donner.
Meltzer organised an online fundraising auction, selling off lots including film memorabilia and a walk-on role in hit TV show Heroes.
The auction raised $100,000 (£56,000) - double what was expected - and will allow the group to carry out all of the necessary renovations and repairs.
Meltzer says, "We’re all Clark Kent (Superman’s alter-ego). We all know what it is like to be boring and ordinary and we all want to be able to rip open our shirt and do something beyond ourselves.
"That’s what happened here. Ordinary people made a difference."

LATEST: Actress JOANNA LUMLEY will stay in Britain after former Nepalese Gurkha soldiers won their battle to remain in the country.
The Indian-born British actress, whose father fought alongside the Gurkhas in the British army, had threatened to leave the U.K if former Nepalese Gurkha soldiers lost their battle to stay in the country.
But after taking their fight to the High Court in London, it was ruled that up to 2,000 Gurkhas were allowed to stay in Britain.
And Lumley branded their victory "utterly, utterly thrilling".
She says, "I am so proud of British justice and so proud of the Ghurkas. At last we can begin to put this great wrong right."

Veteran TV writer OLIVER CRAWFORD, who penned episodes of classic shows including STAR TREK and KOJAK, has died aged 91.
Crawford was among those blacklisted by Hollywood in the 1950s "Red Scare" scandal, during which certain screenwriters, actors, directors, musicians, and other entertainers were denied employment because of their political beliefs.
He got back into the industry in 1957, and went on to become one of the most successful writers in television, penning episodes for iconic 60s and 70s shows including Rawhide, Perry Mason, Ironside, The Fugitive, and The Bionic Woman.
Crawford died in Los Angeles on 24 September (08). The cause of his death has not been released.
He is survived by a son, Kenny Crawford, daughters Jo and Vicki Crawford, sister Gladys Palast, and brother, Ernest Kaufman.

LATEST: ROB LOWE’s bitter court battle against his former nanny has been put on hold as she appeals to get the actor’s lawsuit against her thrown out of court.
The Brothers & Sisters star sued Jessica Gibson in April (08), claiming she tried to extort money from him by accusing him and his wife "of a vicious laundry list of false terribles".
Gibson countersued, accusing the actor of groping her and exposing himself.
Gibson had an early victory when pitted against Lowe’s legal in court California Superior Court Judge Denise de Bellefeuille threw out four of Lowe’s claims against Gibson in July (08), including his allegations that she defamed him.
One of the nanny’s accusations in her countersuit was also dismissed. The nature of the claim is unknown.
Gibson’s lawyer Gloria Allred went on to reportedly file an appeal against this ruling - insisting the higher court reinstate Gibson’s allegation.
And the trial has now been put on hold pending the decision, as well as her appeal for the judge to dismiss Lowe’s standing claims against her.
Allred tells People.com, "Everything in the case comes to a halt for now.
Although we were successful in getting parts of his lawsuit thrown out in an earlier decision, we feel most of it is still without merit." Lowe is also being sued by a second nanny, Laura Boyce, but he has denied any improper behaviour.
