Faeces fight
Veterinarians in Israel are set to use DNA in the fight against dog faeces littering the streets.
The animal experts will be taking samples using mouth swabs and matching to a rapidly growing database to match the poo to the dog’s owner.
If the scheme takes off, the vets hope to make it mandatory to register their animal’s DNA.
Tika Bar-On, chief veterinarian, came up with the plan and said animal lovers have so far reacted positively to the idea.
She said: “Residents are co-operating because they want their neighbourhood to be clean.” The doctor also explained the collection of genetic makeup could also help in research into diseases, investigating canine pedigree and identifying stray animals.
