JANET JACKSON has parted ways with Island Records, and is planning to go it alone after the sales disappointment of her most recent album DISCIPLINE.
The pop superstar, who is currently on tour, announced the news through a representative on Monday (22Sep08).
In a statement, the rep said, "At her request, the record label has agreed to dissolve their working relationship.
"Now, more than 20 years after the release of her iconic album Control, Janet will have autonomy over her career, without the restrictions of a label system." Jackson went public with her label dissatisfaction in June (08), when she told website SOHH.com, "I’m trying to figure out a way to say this, but just to say it and to be quite honest, they (label bosses) just stopped all promotion whatsoever on the album, so I don’t think you’re going to hear another single off this album." Jackson signed to Island Records in July 2007.

Wildman rocker TED NUGENT has offered his services to SIR PAUL McCARTNEY - as a bodyguard.
Nugent has offered to head up the former Beatle’s personal security detail when McCartney performs in Israel on Thursday (25Sep08).
And, despite the fact the Cat Scratch Fever hitmaker is an avid hunter and McCartney an animal rights activist, he urges the Brit to take his offer seriously after learning of death threats from Muslim extremists if the ex-Beatle plays the concert to mark Israel’s 60th birthday.
Nugent tells WENN, "Regardless that Paul and I have our obvious social, cultural, and culinary differences outside of music, I will not bend or waiver to voodoo religious whackjobs and neither should Paul." The U.S. rocker and National Rifle Association official insists his training with military specialists and various law enforcement agencies make him the perfect security expert for rock stars like McCartney.
He adds, "It would be my pleasure to keep this legendary musical hero safe from terrorists and mad men, and then buy him a nice dinner of tofu. I’m Dirty Harry with a ponytail, and I’m at Paul’s service.”

BEN STILLER was tempted to come up with a theme tune for his latest movie TROPIC THUNDER - but realised he had no musical talent.
Stiller co-wrote and directed the movie, but wanted to try his hand at creating the score too.
But he quickly changed his mind after his first attempt at some lyrics.
Stiller tells British radio station Heart FM, “I didn’t write the theme tune like John Carpenter did the score for his movie Halloween.
“The problem is that I don’t have any musical talent.
"I think that would have been a bad idea for everyone involved.”

British funnyman MATT LUCAS has taken inspiration from EDDIE MURPHY and comedic actor MIKE MYERS for his new LITTLE BRITAIN movie.
The funnyman has revealed plans for a film that will see him and comedian pal David Walliams play multiple characters.
Lucas says, "We’ve got an idea that excites us that we hope will appeal to audiences in lots of different countries.
"The two of us will play five or six characters that will go around together, so it’ll be technically very challenging.
"We looked at people like Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy and how they appear as lots of different characters." The movie - which is currently unnamed - will be produced by Ben Stiller’s production company, Red Hour, in collaboration with DreamWorks.

German supermodel HEIDI KLUM has inscribed her devotion to husband SEAL with an abstract tattoo baring their names.
The Victoria’s Secret stunner recently revealed the design - inked on her right forearm - while out and about in Los Angeles, and she showed it off while hosting the Emmy Awards on Sunday night (21Sep08).
But she insists it’s not a new tattoo.
She explains, "I’ve had it since May. My husband and I always get married every year. It was our fourth wedding, and we wanted to have our names tattooed together. So it’s my husband’s name and our three children, their initials, in the (three) stars."

Teenage star DAKOTA FANNING has become a cheerleader at her high school.
The I Am Sam star has only been attending a regular private high school for the past year after being home schooled for six years, as her acting career took off - and she’s already leading the cheers on the sports field.
She says, "I am a cheerleader. Now everybody always wants me to do cheers.
It’s so funny.
"Cheerleading is so much fun, especially at your school because you get such a sense of school spirit and you’re proud of your school. I love that. I’m the one that’s on top of the (human) pyramid; I’m the flyer, so that’s fun too."

The zookeeper who reared the most famous polar bear on earth from birth has been found dead in his Berlin, Germany apartment.
Thomas Doerflein became a celebrity in Germany after giving up a year of his life to rear baby polar bear Knut, who was rejected by his mother at birth.
Stars flocked to see the cute bear at the Berlin Zoo whenever they were filming in the city and Leonardo DiCaprio became a big fan after appearing with Knut for a Vanity Fair green issue cover shoot.
Doerflein, 44, had reportedly been ill for some time before death, which is not being treated as suspicious.

RENEE ZELLWEGER has opened up about her breast cancer scare, which threatened to halt her career after the success of JERRY MAGUIRE.
The actress reveals she found two small masses in her right breast during a self examination in 1996 and decided to get them checked out.
Zellweger, who lost her grandmother to cancer in 1969, recalls, "I thought, ‘Oh, I know what you do now. You find out what that is. So I went and found out." The actress tells America’s Self magazine she made an appointment with her doctor in Los Angeles and went to his clinic with a no-nonsense attitude.
She adds, "I was like, ‘Let’s just have it over with. Get in there, stab away, get your little crunchy bit or whatever you’re looking for, put it in the mail and we’ll call it a day.’ "Then I had a weird couple of days waiting for the phone call." Zellweger eventually discovered she had fibroadenomas (benign breast tumours), which she calls, "a fancy word for nothing".
But the experience made her take cancer threats more seriously: "I pay attention, I do go get my check-ups."

Cult rockers FLIPPER have been forced to scrap an upcoming U.S. tour after bass player KRIST NOVOSELIC quit the group.
The former Nirvana star reportedly wanted to take care of "responsibilities at home" and opted not to tour with the band.
The group is looking for a replacement.

Rapper PERCY MILLER is hitting the road to get viewpoints from America’s troubled teens about modern issues and concerns, for a new TV show.
The hitmaker-turned-Better Black Television chairman, formerly Master P, is set to visit teens in detention centres and those from some of America’s poorest neighbourhoods for his new show Teens Real Talk.
Miller, the father of teenage star Lil Romeo, says, "This show is the home base where teens can freely connect with their peers, share their stories without fear of judgment, and collaborate with their families and community leaders to discuss resources and organise for social justice.
"It’s time for Barack Obama to be the first African American president and it’s time to empower the next generation of our nation’s teens to be more responsible.
"The difference between this show and other teen shows is we’re taking this one on the road, to the schools, to the churches, to the communities, to the people to talk about real issues and find real solutions.
"We will also visit incarcerated teens in juvenile halls who are seeking answers and solutions… Our goal with this show is to preserve our future leaders."

DOLLY PARTON had no problems playing sexually harassed DORALEE RHODES in the original 9 TO 5 movie - because her former boss, late country icon PORTER WAGONER, was a "male chauvinist pig".
The singer has recreated the hit movie for the stage and reworking the film as a musical brought back a lot of memories from her past - good and bad.
Parton recalls Wagoner giving her her big break, and performing with him on his hit U.S. TV variety show for seven years - before they fell out over his attitude towards his busty sidekick.
Parton tells the Los Angeles Times newspaper, "I don’t mean this in a bad way… but he was very much a male chauvinist pig. Certainly a male chauvinist.
"He was in charge, and it was his show, but he was also very strong willed.
That’s why we fought like crazy, because I wouldn’t put up with a bunch of stuff.
"Out of respect for him, I knew he was the boss, and I would go along to where I felt this was reasonable for me.
"But once it passed points where it was like, your way or my way, to prove to you that I can do it, then I would just pitch a damn fit. I wouldn’t care if it killed me.
"I would do like the Doralee character (in 9 To 5) and say, ‘I would turn you from a rooster to a hen if you don’t stop.’" Parton and Wagoner patched up their differences before the colourful country legend died in 2007.

Singer/songwriter JAMES TAYLOR has pledged to live a healthy life after dying five times.
The Sweet Baby James singer admits his wild ways brought him close to death on many occasions - and he actually passed away five times during his 20 years of heroin addiction.
So, to thank the powers that be for giving him a little borrowed time, Taylor has vowed to get fit and stay fit.
He says, "By some stroke of luck, I didn’t end up with any of the diseases that my behaviour should’ve given me.
"I should’ve died about five times. So I’ve used up all my chances. I have to take it easy now and keep fit, keep healthy."

Rising gas prices and recession fears in the U.S. didn’t upset TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS’ tour - the veteran rockers beat THE POLICE and DAVE MATTHEWS BAND to top the touring charts in North America this summer (08).
The American Girl hitmakers raked in over $32 million (£17.3 million) and became the only touring supergroup to make more than $30 million (£16.2 million) on the road this summer, according to new Pollstar tour tracking estimates.
The Dave Matthews Band came in second with $29.5 million (£16 million) and The Police’s final reunion tour shows brought in $28.3 million (£15.3 million), putting them third.
Neil Diamond and Coldplay round out the top five.

New York officials have praised SIR PAUL McCARTNEY’s ex-wife HEATHER MILLS for her $1 million ($540,541) food donation to a local charity.
Mills, who recently purchased a home in New York, had three years worth of veggie burgers delivered to impoverished children in the South Bronx, distributed through the area’s Hope Center community organisation.
Over the weekend (beg20Sep08), she helped cook a vegan barbeque lunch for the low-income families.
She is now set to receive honours from Congressman José Serrano and Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión.
Mills says, "I wanted to help make sure they have as many nutritional advantages as anyone else." A spokesperson for the charity adds: "The reaction in the community to this donation is, ‘Wow!’ It enables us to provide over 2,800 children living in some of the poorest neighbourhoods in NYC with good, healthy food."

Celebrity biographer IAN HALPERIN has lashed out at BRITNEY SPEARS’ mother LYNNE, insisting she selfishly pushed the singer into fame.
Halperin spent 18 months as an undercover paparazzi getting close to the pop singer and her inner circle of managers and friends, and now plans to release a book full of his findings.
In his forthcoming book Stalking Britney: Under Siege with Britney Spears, he attacks Lynne - who recently defended herself against accusations of being a pushy stage mother in her own book about her life raising Britney, entitled Through the Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World.
Halperin says, "Lynne is a spin doctor and a borderline manic-depressive. She wants to come across as very innocent, but she only rushed to Britney’s side when Britney had her emotional breakdown because there was a big rush for Britney’s fortune.
"It’s ridiculous that she says she didn’t push both these kids into showbusiness. (The parents) thought she would be a cash cow to set them up for their future." His book is scheduled to hit shelves in November (08).

Former SPICE GIRL EMMA BUNTON has scrapped plans to move to Los Angeles to open a restaurant in London.
The singer has put on hold her hopes of forging a TV presenting career in the U.S and instead plans to open a family business with her chef partner Jade Jones.
The former Damage star has been training as a chef since he quit the music industry.
He says, "Yes, I want to open a restaurant with Emma. We’re not sure when or where yet, but it’s something we’re seriously looking into." Bunton won’t be the first Spice Girl to step into the catering industry Victoria Beckham recently revealed she was setting up a restaurant with Gordon Ramsay in Los Angeles.

Former child star JODIE SWEETIN is set to make a return to the small screen in a reality TV show featuring her husband and their newborn daughter.
The former Full House star, 26, has already begun filming on the project, just months after giving birth to little Zoie in April (08) with husband Cody Herpin.
She says, "My husband and I are now shooting our reality show, which is going to be really fun. It’s following us and our new baby." Sweetin, who’s struggled with an addiction to crystal meth in the past, says the show will have "a Tori (Spelling) & Dean (McDermott) vibe," adding, "we’re a little more rock and roll. JACK BLACK stunned his co-stars on the set of TROPIC THUNDER by constantly walking around in his underwear.
The actor did have to strip for some of the film’s scenes, but also liked to stay half-naked during takes.
Co-star Ben Stiller tells British radio station Heart FM, "He always takes his pants off, if he sees the comedic potential then those bad boys come right off.
"He’s so much more than just a guy who takes his pants off, but he really does that better than anyone else… and he has a great legs and great body.
"He’s really comfortable in his own skin so he was more than happy to spent a lot of the movie in barely anything other than his underpants."
