METALLICA’s new album DEATH MAGNETIC was written as a tribute to tragic ALICE IN CHAINS rocker LAYNE STALEY.
Frontman James Hetfield admits the central message of the record is that people should come to terms with the inevitable prospect of death.
And he reveals that the main inspiration behind many of the lyrics was Man in the Box singer Staley, who died of a drug overdose in 2002.
Hetfield tells Guitar World magazine, "The theme of our new album is that we’re all gonna die sometime. Just like the poles of a magnet, some people are drawn to death and others are repulsed by it, but we all have to deal with it.
"Lyrically, it started as a bit of a tribute to Layne Staley and all those who’ve martyred themselves in the name of rock and roll. But it grew and evolved from there."

Pop star PINK’S ex-husband CAREY HART agreed to appear in her latest music video - but didn’t realise the song was about him.
The fiery singer split up with motocross biker Hart last year (07), and used her latest single, love/hate anthem So What, to help her move on.
The star invited her ex-husband to feature in the track’s promo - which sees the singer hack down a tree with the former couple’s initials carved into it.
Hart had no idea of the single’s content - but Pink insists he is used to her mad ways.
She tells BBC Radio One, "He hadn’t heard the song before he showed up for the video. He’s a good sport, he knows how psychotic I am, he spent six and a half years with me. A year with me is like dog years…"

Rock legend ROBERT PLANT scooped the top gong at this year’s (08) Americana Music Association Awards, according to U.S. reports.
The Led Zeppelin singer and country star Alison Krauss won Duo-Group of the Year and Album of the Year for their LP Raising Sand at the 7th Annual Honours and Awards at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on Thursday (18Sep08).
Although the results are yet to be made public, online reports claim the pair accepted the award in person before Plant joined the show’s bandleader Buddy Miller onstage to sing a new song due to be released on Miller’s upcoming album.
The Americana Music Association is a trade organisation devoted to promoting music which has its cultural roots in the States.

Rapper BUSTA RHYMES has left his record label in order to release his latest album BLESSED through another music industry giant.
The hip-hop star - real name Trevor George Smith Jr. - decided to quit Aftermath/Interscope after four years in favour of Universal Motown records because of a reportedly acrimonious relationship with Aftermath boss Jimmy Iovine.
The label - which is also home to hip-hop heavyweights Dr Dre, Eminem and 50 Cent - reportedly pushed back the release of Rhymes’ eighth studio LP Blessed, and clashed with the star over certain track samples.
The album was never released, despite the star making videos for two tracks from the LP - We Made It and Don’t Touch Me (Throw Da Water On ‘Em).
Now, the rapper has signed an agreement to release his next project through Universal Motown, according to hip-hop site SOHH.

JUDE LAW is reportedly in talks to star alongside ROBERT DOWNEY JR. in GUY RITCHIE’s adaptation of SHERLOCK HOLMES.
The Alfie star is touted to play Holmes’ sidekick Dr. Watson in the forthcoming film and is expected to sign up for the part shortly, according to Daily Variety.
Ritchie denied that Russell Crowe was lined up for the role after reports surfaced earlier this month (Sep08).
Production on the movie is slated to begin in October (08) in London.

Former LIBERTINES bandmates PETE DOHERTY and CARL BARAT thrilled fans as they took to the stage at a surprise reunion gig in London.
Doherty was scheduled to perform at The Prince of Wales pub in Camden, North London on Wednesday (17Sep08) for fashion label Gio-Goi - a brand the rocker has modelled for in the past.
And revellers were stunned as Doherty was joined on stage by Barat to play some of their classic tracks, as well as a rendition of Oasis’ Don’t Look Back In Anger.
Earlier this year (Jun08), Barat hinted that he would like to reunite with Doherty - telling reporters he "missed" the star.
The Libertines - hailed as the future of rock when they first found fame in 2002 - split acrimoniously in 2004 due to Doherty’s drug addictions. He went on to form Babyshambles, with Barat fronting the Dirty Pretty Things.

HEATHER MILLS is suing her former publicist for more than $460,000 (£250,000) for breach of confidence after the ex-employee slammed the one-time glamour model in a revealing newspaper interview.
Sir Paul McCartney’s ex-wife launched a High Court action in London against Michele Elyzabeth earlier this month (Sep08) following the representative’s claims that Mills was obsessed with money and fame.
In the first installment of the interview, published in Britain’s News of the World on 7 September (08), Elyzabeth told the tabloid, "Heather is a calculating, pathological liar and the biggest b**ch on the planet." Mills filed the suit the day after the newspaper hit the streets (08Sep08), claiming breach of confidence and falsehood over allegations about her failed marriage to McCartney.
Elyzabeth worked for Mills for four years until earlier this year (08). Mills alleges she sacked the publicist after losing faith in her judgement, but Elyzabeth claims she resigned because Mills was impossible to work for.
The case is expected to be heard within eight weeks, reports Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper.

Actress PAMELA ANDERSON refuses to hire a maid to keep her house clean because doing household chores keeps her grounded.
The former Baywatch babe admits she is actually a fan of washing and cleaning, and the acts prevent her from feeling "helpless".
She says, "It’s really important for me as a woman to do stuff that keeps me grounded. I like to vacuum and do laundry.

Actor BALTHAZAR GETTY has called for the U.S. government to curb the paparazzi after his alleged romance with SIENNA MILLER made him a target for photographers.

Teen pop star NICK JONAS celebrated his 16th birthday in style - by hiring out a baseball ground to mark the occasion with pals.
The youngest Jonas sibling was joined by elder brothers Kevin and Joe at Los Angeles’ Dodgers Stadium on Wednesday (17Sep08), the day he turned 16.
The singing trio were surrounded by 15 friends for the evening bash, which cost more than $30,000 (£16,000), according to E! Online.
