LAW & GILLEY’S PEACE EFFORTS APPLAUDED BY PRESIDENT KARZAI
British actor JUDE LAW and filmmaker JEREMY GILLEY have been praised by Afghanistan’s PRESIDENT HAMID KARZAI for promoting peace in the war-torn country.
The pair has been in Afghanistan to urge feuding parties to call a one-day ceasefire - to coincide with the United Nations’ global Peace Day on 21 September (08).
That event was prompted by Gilley’s Peace One Day project, for which Law is an ambassador.
And their efforts have been applauded by Karzai, after he met Law and Gilley at his palace in Kabul on Tuesday (03Sep08).
A statement released by the President’s office reads: "Karzai praised their efforts and said, ‘Afghanistan, too, hopes and makes lots of efforts for the establishment of peace in Afghanistan, the region and the world’." Afghanistan has been rocked by gunfight and bombings by militant fighters since the Taliban was removed from power with the help of the U.S. and U.K.
armed forces in 2001, in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
