MERYL STREEP has ended an almost two-decade-long myth suggesting she angrily attacked MADONNA after missing out on the lead in movie musical EVITA, insisting she never said what was reported.
In a 1991 New York Times article, the Oscar winner allegedly savaged Madonna, stating she could "rip her throat out," after the pop star landed Evita.
But Streep insists she would never have said such a thing.
She says, "That’s one of those things you can never erase from whatever it is, the Internet. Why would I say that? "I was out of the running by the time they got the musical together."

BRAD PITT is the "happest dad in the world" after partner ANGELINA JOLIE have gave birth to twins, according to the mayor of Nice, France.
Christian Estrosi claims Pitt is beaming after the birth of Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline at Nice’s Fondation Lenval hospital on Saturday 12 July (08).
Mayor Estrosi tells Nice-Matin newspaper, "(Brad) told me, `We chose one of the best hospitals in the world, one of the best doctors, one of the best medical teams. And also the most beautiful bay in the world.’"

New parents BRAD PITT and ANGELINA JOLIE helped a small French publication beat the world’s media to the news of the birth of their twins babies - by inviting a reporter to visit their hospital suite.
While TV shows, newspapers and magazines were forced to camp outside Nice, France’s Fondation Lenval hospital awaiting news about the birth, Nice-Matin journalist Jean-Francois Rouboud was handed the scoop from the couple themselves.
Rouboud was tipped off to the happy news and then given special access to the clinic and Jolie’s obstetrician Dr Michel Sussman.
Nice-Matin editor Olivier Biscaye says, "It was Brad Pitt who chose to give the scoop to Nice-Matin. He said to the doctor that the local media should be the first informed about the birth. We knew we would be the first in the world.
"Rouboud spoke to the doctor… We had all the details: the names, weight, one boy, one girl." And the proud editor insists it is his publication’s reputation that served to land him and his reporter the big scoop.
Biscaye adds, "Nice-Matin has always chosen not to play the game of paparazzi towards the celebrities who have chosen to live in the region. We respect them, and they do likewise.
"We let them have a peaceful life. This is why I think Brad and Angelina have chosen to make this gift to Nice-Matin."

Actress GILLIAN ANDERSON fears the success of the new X-FILES movie will give fans the chance to check out one of her most embarrassing moments.
The flame-haired star taped a spoof audition for the American Idol Gives Back charity telethon in 2007, but her singing was deemed so bad the clip was cut from the show.
And now Anderson is back in the spotlight as the star of the much-anticipated X-Files movie sequel, I Want To Believe, she worries the awful footage will be unearthed.
She says, "I pretended to audition for American Idol acapella, and do a really bad job, which of course they never used. But I’m sure it will pop up at some point now to embarrass me."

America’s first couple of comedy, JIMMY KIMMEL and SARAH SILVERMAN, have ended their five year romance.
A representative for late night U.S. TV host Kimmel and the comedienne has confirmed the split, insisting it was mutual.
Just five months ago the pair hit the headlines when their star-studded parody sketches for Kimmel’s show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, became an Internet sensation.
Silverman’s I’m F**king Matt Damon tune and video was followed by Kimmel’s I’m F**king Ben Affleck.
The videos featured a host of A-list stars including Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford, Robin Williams and Cameron Diaz.

A woman convicted of murdering actress SHARON TATE in 1969 has launched a desperate bid for freedom, after learning she has just six months to live.
Susan Atkins was part of the infamous Manson Family cult, which brutally slaughtered Tate at the Los Angeles home she shared with director husband Roman Polanksi.
Atkins stabbed Tate and scrawled "pig" on the wall of her home with the actress’ blood. She was handed the death sentence for her crime, but it was commuted to life behind bars after the state abolished executions.
Atkins has been been diagnosed with brain cancer and has appealed for Compassionate Release Consideration.
But Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley has vowed to fight her release.
Cooley says Atkins "has failed to demonstrate genuine remorse and lacks insight and understanding of the gravity of her crimes".
Atkins will learn of her fate at a hearing in the state capital, Sacramento, on Tuesday (15Jul08).

Pregnant MINNIE DRIVER has applauded the angry surfers who came to her rescue when a quiet day at the beach turned into a paparazzi invasion last month (Jun08).
Driver, actor pal Colin Farrell and his young son were relaxing at Paradise Cove in Malibu, California when an army of photographers targeted them for pictures.
Farrell himself challenged one group of snappers but when he was outnumbered, local surfers stepped in to let the cameramen know they weren’t welcome.
A brawl broke out between snappers and surfers, with some paparazzi forced to defend themselves from beatings as they were dragged into the sea with their expensive equipment.
Driver says, "We were chased off the beach by these paparazzi and then my local community and my lovely friends and neighbours took serious umbrage at the fact that their community had been so disrupted by these people, who were just total piranhas.
"Whilst I don’t condone the violence at all, I think they (surfers) were just defending people trying to have a normal afternoon.
"Colin has a little son and I’m pregnant, so it was just sort of disgusting and wrong. It wasn’t a happy experience of taking lovely pictures; it was rabid and weird.
"The Malibu community was defending us, which was really nice. It didn’t stop the guy from selling his pictures for $80,000, but, hey, maybe a punch in the mouth was worth it for him." And Driver is happy the incident has prompted local officials to boost the police presence on the beaches, so celebrities can sunbathe in peace: "Now we have sheriffs patrolling our beach, which I kind of love."

R&B sensation ESTELLE has been crowned the queen of Europe after taking her hit AMERICAN BOY to the top of the pop charts in her native Britain, France, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, and Ireland.
The track, which became only the third single to hit the top of the U.K.
charts on digital sales alone, tops the new European Airplay Chart and several countries’ iTunes Stores’ Top Songs countdowns.

The Jam founder admits he shudders every time he sees Lydon on reality TV shows or hears of another planned Sex Pistols reunion.

Singer CARNIE WILSON has found a novel way of losing weight - cooking for her reality TV pals.
The Wilson Phillips star was asked by actress pal Maureen McCormick to help her run a Tennessee inn as part of an upcoming U.S. reality TV show.
Wilson spent a month with McCormick and R&B star Bobby Brown on the show, Outsiders Inn - and she was so busy cooking Southern treats for the cast and crew, she didn’t have time to sit and eat with them.
The singer, who underwent a gastric bypass in 2000 and faces a constant battle with her weight, says, "I just wanted to feed people. I got to cook every day, and that brings me a lot of comfort.
"I’ve been really changing how I eat. It’s great. I cooked really fattening food on the show but I lost 11 pounds while we did it.
"I cooked for everybody on the set every day. I’d wake up early and bake and then I wouldn’t be eating the food. I would eat and spit, taste and spit.
"Then I made my tofu. We were cooking healthy. I was doing a bunch of dishes at the same time. I made my vegetables." The weight she lost was transferred to the inn’s entertainment director Brown Bobby, who spent the shoot eating up Wilson’s just fried catfish.
He says, "I gained 12 pounds on this show."

LATEST: A DAVID LEE ROTH imposter faces obstruction of justice charges after convincing police in Ontario he was the real VAN HALEN frontman.
Two Canadian police officers claimed they helped to save the rocker’s life last month (Jun08) after finding him suffering from anaphylactic shock in a car by the side of a highway.
The man they found in trouble told them he was Lee Roth, explaining he had suffered a severe allergic reaction to a nutty snack.
But the baffled rock star released a statement last week (ends11Jul08) explaining he isn’t allergic to anything - and the cops had the wrong guy.
His comments prompted Ontario officials to launch an investigation into the mix up.
And one local police spokesman claims the doppelganger has "scammed a lot of people" and now faces charges for giving a false name to cops.
Meanwhile, new reports suggest the faux Roth discharged himself from hospital, before police realised they had been fooled, and was spotted partying at a Hamilton, Ontario nightclub hours after the cops found him in distress.

LATEST: Canadian crooner MICHAEL BUBLE’s split from girlfriend EMILY BLUNT has left his family devastated - because they loved the actress.

MADONNA and her brother CHRISTOPHER CICCONE lived like husband-and-wife following her divorce from actor SEAN PENN, he reveals in his new tell-all book.
He claims she turned to him after the 1989 divorce, and he became like a husband to her.
Speaking on U.S. TV on Monday (14Jul08) to promote his book Life With My Sister Madonna, Ciccone says, "Not very many brothers find themselves on their knees in their sister’s dressing room wiping sweat off of her naked body. It was an odd situation, I couldn’t really tell my friends. But I wanted to be there for her. I knew she needed someone there that she could trust.
"We were living in the same house together after her divorce from Sean. I was the last person she spoke to at night before she went to bed. I was the first person she saw in the morning. We ran together, we had sour dough toast together, we had our coffee together. We were very close brother and sister. It was a bit like a marriage. It was kind of weird."

PAMELA ANDERSON has starred in the last Australian version of reality TV show BIG BROTHER - because it has been axed after seven years.
Network Ten has confirmed the show will not return after the current series ends in July (08).

Actress SELMA BLAIR is proud to be starring in the U.S. version of Australian TV comedy KATH & KIM - because she had to battle network bosses to land the role.
The Hellboy star has signed up to appear in the NBC adaptation of the hit Aussie show alongside funnywoman Molly Shannon.
It focuses on the dysfunctional relationship between a daughter and her mother.
And Blair had to fight hard to make TV executives believe she was the right candidate for the part - because no one wanted her to be involved in the project.
She explains, "We’re trying to do it on our own terms. But it’s a different show. This one has a little more heart than the Australian one.
"I really fought to do it. No one really wanted me, but it was great material. I really wanted to be on the show and stay put (in Hollywood) for a while. I think it will really work."

The actress admits she was "stupid" to keep the weapon, but insists it was part of her "controversial, Angelina Jolie" phase.
She tells Interview magazine, "That was my controversial stage where I’d just started acting. I went through my little Angelina Jolie phase, like I was really tough. I had just come out in Training Day and I was nude in it, so I was getting a certain kind of attention.
"And I did carry a little blade. My God, with obviously no intention to ever use it. I had Mace as well. But the blade sounded cooler in interviews. I was young and stupid."

SHIRLEY MacLAINE has late Hollywood star AUDREY HEPBURN to thank for her new role playing fashion icon COCO CHANEL - because she recommended her for the part more than forty years ago.
MacLaine, who will take the role in a forthcoming mini-series - entitled Coco Chanel - claims Hepburn likened her to the French fashion designer, when the pair starred together in 1961 movie The Children’s Hour.
MacLaine says, "She told me I should play Coco Chanel. I said, ‘She was a little scrunched over and very short.’ "And she said, ‘But the spirit of the woman is what matches your spirit’.
"She was obviously right." And the 74-year-old admits the comparison isn’t necessarily flattering: "I think we are both colourful, we are both rude, and we are both spontaneous. We can’t hold what we feel to be the honest opinion in. And I think we are both probably dead."

Actor PATRICK STEWART has been awarded a professorship at an English university.
Stewart - who plays Professor Xavier in the X-Men franchise - took on the new role of Professor of Performing Arts at Huddersfield University, where he is also chancellor, in a ceremony on Monday (14Jul08).
He also lead 400 students in the university’s inaugural graduate procession through the town centre. The 68-year-old - who was born in nearby Mirfield - says, "I’m truly honoured to receive this title."
