BLONDIE frontwoman DEBBIE HARRY has blamed MADONNA for keeping her from topping the charts, insisting she is "not very happy" with the pop star’s reign.
The Tide Is High singer quit touring at the height of her solo career in the mid-1980s to nurse bandmate and then-boyfriend Chris Stein through a potentially fatal skin disease.
But by the time she had reunited with Blondie to return to the spotlight in 1997, Material Girl Madonna had catapulted to fame and become the world’s most successful female artist.
The 63-year-old admits she was "kind of shocked and not very happy" the pop star had such a triumphant hold on the music scene.
She says, "I had been performing all along, with one or two solo albums. But we could not get back with Blondie because of legal problems. We had publishing issue, messy record company deals, management problems.
"But I think that is one of the things that Madonna was very smart about.
That is something she can be commended for." The Heart Of Glass singer insists, however, that she bears no hard feelings towards Madonna, adding: "She says that she listens to me for inspiration and I have to take that as a compliment. But we are vastly different."

Bollywood stars including AISHWARYA RAI are the latest celebrities to join the green movement, after teaming up for a world tour focusing on climate change.
Rai will join Amitabh Bachchan and Shilpa Shetty to perform on eight dates of the forthcoming Unforgettable Tour, which will highlight the dangers of global warming.
The three-hour event will feature dance routines choreographed by Shiamak Davar.
The first concert kicks off in Toronto, Canada on 18 July (08) and culminates on 24 August (08) at London’s O2 Arena.

Welsh actor RHYS IFANS is ready to move on with his life after his recent split from SIENNA MILLER - insisting all he wants to do his have fun with his pals.
Miller parted ways with Ifans last month (Jun08) amid rumours he was becoming too possessive.
Pals of Ifans have been worried over his erratic behaviour since the split.
He has been seen on several lonely boozy nights out in London – one of which ended with him reportedly trying to hit a photographer.
But the actor insists he is very happy being single - and just wants to forget about his former lover.
He tells Britain’s The People newspaper, "I’ve forgotten about Sienna, trust me. F**k Sienna, I’m over it. I’m having a great time. I won’t be going for any more wrong ‘uns (ones) though.
"There aren’t any other women at the moment, I’m not ready for all that again. I’m just having fun with my mates." He adds, "Everyone thinks I am sad. I was, but I’m not anymore. I know people have been worried about me but there’s no need, honestly. I’m fine.

Actor JOSH BROLIN was arrested on Saturday (12Jul08) after a bar brawl in Louisiana.
The actor was on a break from shooting his role as George W. Bush for filmmaker Oliver Stone’s forthcoming biopic W, when he allegedly got involved in a fight between revellers at a bar in Shreveport, Louisiana.
According to the state’s The Shreveport Times, the actor, as well as W co-star Jeffrey Wright, were arrested at 2am after they tried to impede local police officers who were splitting up the brawl.
The pair received misdemeanour charges for interfering with police, according to Usweekly.com.
Brolin was charged at the city jail and was forced to pay a $334 (£668) cash bond.

Actor JASON PRIESTLEY has refuted reports he will be returning to BEVERLY HILLS, 90210 in the new spin-off series.
Filming is currently underway to bring the programme back to small screens, with stars Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling among the actors reprising their original roles.
But Priestley, who played hunk Brandon Walsh in the TV series, insists he has declined offers from U.S. network CW to appear in the new show.
He says, "I think I sort of ran the gamut with Brandon – 249 episodes. I think Brandon did his time." But the 38-year-old claims he hasn’t turned down working behind the scenes, and would love to direct a few of the new episodes.
He adds, "They’re talking to my people about seeing if they can slot me in over there. I directed more episodes of 90210 than anybody. I directed 18 episodes."

A man is in a serious condition in hospital after he was stabbed several times at a Scottish music festival.
The 22-year-old was attacked at the T in the Park festival near Kinross, Scotland on Saturday night (12Jul08). He is in a serious but stable condition at a nearby hospital.
The three-day event, which attracts around 80,000 revellers, is this year headlined by U.S. rockers REM and British dance group The Prodigy.
Police are looking for two men in connection with the stabbing and have urged witnesses to come forward with any information about the attack.

Teen sensation MILEY CYRUS has been caught up in yet another photo scandal after an internet hacker accessed her phone’s memory and found a series of saucy snaps.
The new pictures allegedly show the singer posing seductively in the shower with only a wet t-shirt covering her modesty, as well as a photo of her showing off her stomach in a skimpy top.
The snaps were reportedly downloaded from the star’s personal picture phone memory by a hacker calling himself the Digital Gangster.
According to celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, who has the controversial new photographs on his website, the hacker is shopping the snaps around to several publications in the hope of landing a big pay cheque.
And Digital Gangster claims to have a whole host of raunchy snaps he has found on the 15-year-old’s phone.

Fielder-Civil is currently awaiting sentence in London’s Pentonville Prison after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice and causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) in relation to an attack on a pub landlord James King in June 2006.
The 25-year-old is expected to be sentenced on 21 July (08). He faces a maximum of five years behind bars for the GBH conviction, while perverting justice charges carry a maximum life sentence - although the judge is unlikely to impose such a severe penalty.
And Winehouse is sure her husband will receive the minimum possible sentence for his crimes and will walk free, having already served seven months on remand.
She says, "Blake’s the best thing that has ever happened to me. I live for visits, even when they’re behind glass. My Blake will be out in 11 days.
"That’s all I care about. He’s my best friend, he’s everything to me."

An unheard interview with JOHN LENNON has revealed the late singer believed his group THE BEATLES were a Christian band.
The star famously caused controversy after claiming in 1966 that the Fab Four were "bigger than Jesus", and predicting Christianity would "vanish and shrink".
But in a previously undiscovered 1969 interview with Lennon, aired for the first time on BBC Radio on Sunday (13Jul08), the Imagine singer claims his infamous remark was misunderstood.
And he even hoped his music would encourage people to turn to the Christian faith.
Lennon told a reporter: "It’s just an expression meaning the Beatles seem to me to have more influence over youth than Christ.
"Now I wasn’t saying that was a good idea, ’cause I’m one of Christ’s biggest fans. And if I can turn the focus on the Beatles on to Christ’s message, then that’s what we’re here to do." The interview was conducted by Ken Seymour of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation when Lennon and wife Yoko Ono were at the Bed-In For Peace protest in Montreal.

ANGELINA JOLIE has given birth to a son and daughter in Nice, France with partner BRAD PITT at her side.
The actress delivered her twins by Caesarian section at the Fondation Lenval hospital on Saturday (12Jul08).
The twins, baby girl Vivienne Marcheline, after Jolie’s late mother Marcheline Bertrand, and baby boy Knox Leon, weighed 5 pounds (2.27 kilograms) and 5 pounds 3 ounces (2.35 kilograms) respectively.
Jolie’s obstetrician, Dr Michael Sussmann, is said to have told reporters the operation, which was slated for Tuesday (15Jul08), had to be moved forward "for medical reasons".
Sussmann tells People.com, "The babies are doing well. The operation went just perfectly. Angelina is in very good spirits. Brad Pitt was at her side. He was there and all was well." He adds, "The mother and father are very, very happy." Jolie and actor partner Pitt are already parents to adopted children Maddox, 6, Pax, 4, Zahara, 3, and biological daughter Shiloh, 2.
