Shoe crime
A US shopkeeper could face jail after taking shoes from criminals. Gabe Fidanque from Colorado had a bizarre policy of telling shoplifters they could either give up one of their shoes or he would call police. Fidanque claims he was losing £500 a month to thieves but little action was taken by local law enforcement. He said: “I give them the choice. I say, ‘I’m either going to call the cops or you give me one of your shoes’. They’re too humiliated to come back and ask for their shoe, and that also means they won’t steal again." Unfortunately Fidanque’s scheme ran into trouble after police told him asking for shoes counts as robbery, a more severe crime than shoplifting.
