ORGAN KING McGRIFF DEAD AT 72
Bluesman JIMMY McGRIFF has died at a nursing home in New Jersey. He was 72.
The organist, a former Philadelphia, Pennsylvania police officer, was a student of blues greats Jimmy Smith and Richard Holmes.
He hit it big when his arrangement of Ray Charles’ I’ve Got A Woman became a hit in the early 1960s. He also enjoyed chart success with the follow-up, All About My Girl.
McGriff became a respected touring session man and used the cash from his successes to found a club in Newark, New Jersey.
He lived out his life battling multiple sclerosis and reportedly died from heart failure on Saturday (24May08).
