Soul star AMY WINEHOUSE won a major songwriting honour at the 2008 Ivor Novello Awards in Britain - and sent her dad to pick it up.
The troubled Rehab singer was honoured for her Love Is A Losing Game track, but couldn’t make it to the prizegiving in London on time.
So it was left to her father Mitch, who had hoped his daughter would join him at the event, to accept the Top Song award on the hitmaker’s behalf on Thursday (22May08).
As he was speaking, Winehouse suddenly appeared in the audience.
Before her arrival, her father told guests, "Unfortunately Amy couldn’t make it, but she is getting better and sends you all her love.
"She has asked me to thank the Ivors for being the first to recognise her songwriting talents." After the awards, the tardy singer said, "I’m very excited and very flattered (to win)." Winehouse used her appearance at the Ivor Novellos to pay tribute to jailed husband Blake Fielder-Civil; the singer wore a heart-shaped hairpin with his name on it.
The gesture counters tabloid claims the couple is planning to divorce, amid reports they have both cheated since their wedding in Miami, Florida last year (07).
Fielder-Civil is currently being held on remand at London’s Pentonville Prison, where he will remain until at least 9 June (08), on charges of perverting the course of justice, relating to a previous charge of grievous bodily harm.
Back at the prizegiving, Winehouse lost out to Shakira and Beyonce Knowles in the other category she was nominated for - Best-Selling Song. The divas took that honour for their duet Beautiful Liar.
Meanwhile, Take That’s Shine was named Most Played Song, Phil Collins won the International Achievement Award, Gabrielle took home a Outstanding Song Collection prize and Mika was named Songwriter of The Year.
The annual Ivor Novello Awards honour the best British music publishers, songwriters and composers.

The CHRISTIAN LACROIX gown CHRISTINA AGUILERA wore on her wedding day has earned the pop star the top spot on a new best bridal gown list.
The Spanish-style gown, which Aguilera wore when she exchanged vows with Jordan Bratman in November, 2005, has been chosen as the top wedding look in a new In Touch magazine poll.
Aguilera beat Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross and Avril Lavigne to the top of Most Glamorous Wedding Gowns list.

TOM CRUISE has slapped the owners of a top Los Angeles baby boutique with a cease and desist letter, accusing them of going public with purchases he and wife Katie Holmes have made without their permission.
The movie star’s legal team has fired off documents to the bosses of Petit Tresor, warning them to stop talking to the media about private Cruise family matters.
According to the documents, obtained by TMZ.com, Cruise was particularly upset when store bosses allegedly leaked false information suggesting the actors have spent more than $350,000 (GBP175,000) on wardrobe items for their daughter Suri in the two years since her birth.
The lawyers insist no one at the store should "say anything (whether true or false) about Mr. Cruise and Ms. Holmes’ shopping habits."

MADONNA hopes her long and drawn out battle to adopt Malawian toddler DAVID BANDA will make it easier for others to follow in her footsteps.
The pop superstar is still waiting for a final hearing - due later this month (May08) - that is expected to end a 20 month long process to make two-year-old David her legal son.
Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival in France, the singer has compared the "painful struggle" to adopt David to natural child birth.
She says, "Hopefully, after we get through this adoption, it will be easier for people to adopt children. It was painful, and it was a big struggle, and I didn’t understand it.
"But, in the end, I rationalised that, when a woman has a child and goes through natural childbirth, she suffers an enormous amount.
"So I sort of went through my own kind of birthing pains with dealing with the press on my front doorstep, accusing me of kidnapping or whatever you want to call it." Madonna also hopes her efforts will pave the way for future adoptions from the African nation, adding, "This adoption essentially was the beginning of the creation of adoption laws in Malawi. I am the template or the role model so to speak for future adoptions."

A Hawaii farmer has named a baby yak JACK after the calf’s mum attacked JACK BLACK while she was pregnant.
The funnyman was shooting new film Tropic Thunder on Kauai when he approached the mum-to-be on a hike.
Co-star Brandon T. Jackson recalls, "We were going down a steep hill and then a yak, who was very pregnant and named Bertha, threw him 10 feet in the air.
"The next day Bertha had a 12-pound baby and the owner named it Baby Jack."

U.S. model CARIDEE ENGLISH will take time to drink between catwalk assignments after passing out at an event in Connecticut at the weekend (17May08).

The Oscar-nominated screenwriter who adapted JAMES JOYCE’s ULYSSES for the big screen has died, aged 72.
Fred Haines lost his battle with lung cancer at his home in Venice, California on 4 May (08).
Haines’ controversial Ulysses, which featured a cast full of Irish actors, was banned in Ireland until 2000, but, despite mixed reviews, it earned the screenwriter an Oscar nod.
Haines also adapted and directed Hermann Hesse’s Steppenwolf, which became a cult success in the mid 1970s.

LIL WAYNE has licked the competition in the Billboard pop charts again by returning to the top of the countdown three weeks after his LOLLIPOP hit was dethroned.
He jumps over Leona Lewis, who ended his brief reign on top last month (Apr08), and Rihanna, who stormed to the top of the charts with Take A Bow last week (15May08), to reclaim the number one spot.

Cancer-stricken GHOST star PATRICK SWAYZE and his wife LISA NIEMI have renewed their wedding vows, according to U.S
. reports.
The couple jetted off to their New Mexico ranch to exchange vows again, before a small group of close friends.
The actor was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the beginning of 2008, and is fighting for his life, according to America’s the Globe.
Swayze and Niemi will celebrate their 33rd wedding anniversary on 12 June (08) and the actor is determined to live up to that date and beyond.
An insider tells the publication, "He is refusing to give up, but right now he’s living for today." The source insists the renewed wedding vows were very special for the couple: "It was very important to him (Swayze) to express his love and commitment to Lisa
. They both mean the world to one another." The Globe recently revealed Swayze has drawn up his will to include plans for his own funeral, and he has settled all his affairs - just in case he suddenly loses his cancer battle.
The Dirty Dancing star continues to undergo treatment in Stanford, California, but close friends insist the future doesn’t look too bright for the movie star.
One pal tells the Globe, "It’s deadly serious
. Doctors have told him that if or when the cancer spreads to his brain he has two weeks to live."

Funnyman ADAM SANDLER is to be a father for the second time - his wife JACKIE TITONE is three and half months pregnant.
The Big Daddy star, 41, and Titone, 33, will welcome the new addition to their family in October (08).
Sandler went public with his baby news during an appearance on Wednesday’s (21May08) The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
He said, "We’re having another baby. (Jackie) is pregnant. She’s very sick…
she vomits a lot.

PINK FLOYD have been honoured in Sweden with the 2008 Polar Music Prize.
The rockers and American opera star Renee Fleming were named the recipients of this year’s (08) honour.

The woman accused of breaking up SHANIA TWAIN’s marriage is speaking out, insisting she’s not the villain.
Marie-Anne Thiebaud, 37, worked as a secretary for the split couple and manages the home in Switzerland that Twain and producer Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange share.
Reports suggest a romance between Thiebauld and Lange ended the 14-year marriage.

Filmmakers Steven Spielberg and George Lucas wanted him to cheat the ageing process by covering his silver streaks - but 65-year-old Ford fought them and won.
Ford says, "There was some early discussion about whether or not that would be a good idea. And I thought , ‘Why can’t Indiana Jones have grey hair? What’s the difference?’ And finally I did prevail. Look at (directors) George (Lucas) and Steven (Spielberg) - a bunch of grey-haired guys. It was their idea."
