OPERA GREAT GENCER DEAD AT 79
Turkish opera star LEYLA GENCER died at her home in Milan, Italy on Friday (09May08). She was 79.
The world-famous soprano died of respiratory problems and heart failure.
Gencer’s career spanned over 30 years and she became a regular at La Scala in Milan after wowing audiences with her Madame Lidoine in Francis Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmelites.
But her most famous role was her first - as Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana - which she reprised several times at opera houses all over the world.
Gencer retired from opera performances in 1985 and dedicated the last two decades to finding and nurturing new talent.
