Musical protest

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 7:20 pm

A US man was arrested after climbing on top of a convenience store roof to serenade commuters with his musical protest of high gasoline prices.
Jay Weinberg, 29, got to the roof of the Family Express and, above pumps dispensing fuel at $3.78per gallon, performed his ditty called ‘Price Gouge’n.’ Dozens of supporters chanted: "I can’t afford it. I’m banging on my dashboard. I can’t believe they think I’m a fool." The performance lasted about 15 minutes before three police officers arrived and arrested Weinberg on charges of trespassing and disorderly conduct.
Police said he was cooperative. The crowd, made up of Weinberg’s friends and other people who just happened to be pumping gas, continued singing.

NASA are to pay volunteers $17,000 to lie in bed for three months.
The space company wants people to do nothing to simulate some of the effects of zero gravity.
As well as staying in bed and doing nothing, volunteers will also have astronauts visit them.
The job advert said: "In order to study a person as if they were in space without gravity, NASA scientists are paying subjects $17,000 to stay in bed for 90 straight days. The study will follow the Bed Rest Project standard model and be conducted at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Participants will live in a special research unit for the entire study and be fed a carefully controlled diet."

A Romanian man has lodged an official complaint after he got drunk on one can of beer.
Iancu Boroi, 35, said he had bought the beer at a local supermarket in Arges but was so drunk after drinking just one can that he nearly passed out.
He said: "I am more than capable of holding my drink and it is ridiculous to think one can of beer can get me so drunk.
"There must have been something wrong with it and I am demanding compensation." He has written to Romania’s Consumer Protection Office demanding they investigate the case.

A French doctor has urged his fellow countrymen to start letting off wind.
Frederic Saldmann says they should give free rein to break wind, burping and sweating to reduce the risk of cancer.
In his book, ‘Le Grand Menage’, Dr. Saldmann says the French should feel comfortable to fluctuate.
Getting rid of the two litres of gas produced each day is a "natural process" and retaining it can be harmful to the intestines.
Similarly, he says his countrymen should feel free to belch at will and certainly after each meal.
This, he says, is the best way to reduce the risk of getting a hiatal hernia, an ailment which affects almost a third of French people.

  • Bear security

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 7:20 pm

Authorities at a US prison are happy a 400lb bear is roaming the grounds of their prison - because they view it as an extra layer of security. Warden Burl Cain, of the Louisiana State Penitentiary, said: "I love that bear being right where it is. "I tell you what, none of our inmates are going to try to get out after dark and wander around when they might run into a big old bear. It’s like having another guard at no cost to the taxpayer." Prison officials believe they have eight to 10 bears on the grounds, said Gary Young, head of the executive management office at the prison. The last recorded escape at the prison was nearly three years ago, and the inmate was quickly recaptured before leaving the grounds.

A Romanian pre-school teacher is being investigated after allegedly asking a policeman to threaten her pupils with jail for being naughty.
School authorities in the county of Vrancea launched an investigation after one parent lodged an official complaint about teacher Nusa Arghene.
Ioon Popa, from Negrilesti village, wrote: "We, the parents, are outraged by the teacher’s attitude.
"She brought a policeman in the class and threatened the kids they would spend the night in jail if they didn’t behave. All of them are now terrified and don’t want to go to the kindergarten any more." The parent also claims the teacher shouted at and slapped some of the children before making them stand in the corner with their hands raised.
The teacher is refusing to comment.

  • Goldfish limbo

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 7:20 pm

A US man has taught his pet goldfish to limbo dance under a bar.
Dr. Dean Pomerleau, 41, from Los Angeles, has also trained Comet to play football, basketball, fetch with a hoop, slalom around a series of poles and push a rugby ball over a set of posts.
He used a training technique called positive reinforcement to train two-year-old common goldfish Comet to carry out the tricks.
He said: "There is mounting evidence that fish are more intelligent than people give them credit for.
"With the correct tools and the basic promise of a food reward, fish can very quickly learn complex tricks - like the limbo, slalom or playing fetch.
"Now people in the market for a dog might want to consider a fish instead."

  • Young driver

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 7:20 pm

A three-year-old Bulgarian girl managed to ‘drive’ her dad’s car half a mile through a busy market.
Karolina Gjursel climbed into the driving seat the automatic when father Gjunai got out at a street market in Beli Lom and left his keys in the car.
She turned on the engine, pressed her foot on the accelerator and drove off with her two young cousins also in the car.
Karolina went half a mile before driving into a river where the children were rescued by passers-by. A police spokesman said: "It was completely irresponsible for a parent to leave children in a car with the keys in the ignition and it is a cause for concern that such a young child appeared to know not only how to start a car but to somehow drive it."

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 7:20 pm

A US man has custom-built himself a coffin to resemble a giant can of his favourite beer.
Bill Bramanti, 67, says he doesn’t plan on using the coffin for its official purpose yet and has instead filled it with ice and beer to use as a cooler.
Bramanti - who paid £1,000 to have the coffin painted like a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer - said: "I’m going to use it as a cooler until I really need it. You see, I’m going to get my money’s worth. Hopefully I get to use it many times." Bramanti said he revealed the unusual coffin to his family during a mock-wake at his house.

  • Naked work

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 7:20 pm

A new British TV show will ask people to go to work naked.
The plan is first for BBC cameras to follow fully clothed employees at work and get their views on nudity before being asked to pose for life-drawing classes to see how comfortable they feel naked in public.
After several weeks, the firm’s staff will all be asked to come to work in the nude for an event called Naked Friday.
The idea is to look at people’s attitudes to nudity, body image and the role clothes play in office hierarchy.
In a letter inviting companies to take part in BBC3’s ‘Naked Office’, producers assure potential participants the project would be a "very productive day as well as a day to remember".

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 7:20 pm

A British singer has had hiccups for 15 months.
Christopher Sands - who suffers every day, sometimes every two seconds for up to 12 hours at a time - will now undergo an operation to help cure him.
The guitarist and professional backing singer believes he must have hiccuped 10 million times since September 2006.
He said: "They might stop for a bit and I can have a kip. But I’ve lost count of the sleepless nights and I can never eat enough to keep my energy up.
"I’ve tried everything to stop them. I must have drunk water a hundred different ways.
"Sometimes if I hunch into a ball I can hold them off for a bit, but it freaks people out." Doctors have diagnosed a faulty stomach valve and will operate to create a new one.

A Japanese civil servant has been demoted after he viewed pornographic websites more than 780,000 times during office hours over a nine-month period. The man, an employee of the Kinokawa government in western Japan, visited porn sites from June last year to February 2008, Kinokawa official Tomiko Waki said. Despite his frequent porn viewing, none of his colleagues noticed his activities. Waki said: "Each desk is set apart from each other." The man’s superiors discovered his extensive porn site visits after his computer became infected with a virus, prompting officials to examine his web browser’s history.

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 7:20 pm

A 72-year-old Chinese man walked more than 600 miles to visit his son in prison.
The man walked for 71 days from his hometown at Taihe town, Anhui province, to the prison at Lianping town, Guangdong province.
The pensioner had planned to take the train but had his savings stolen shortly after leaving home.
The father, who walks with a stick, says he begged all the way, and sometimes ate rotten food from bins during his two month journey.
He said: "I didn’t see him for two years. I am here to visit him and tell him not to worry about me and transform himself for good, while in prison." Prison wardens were so touched by his story that they even bent the rules to allow him to see his son.

  • Fireman flag

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 7:20 pm

A British fireman is set to be prosecuted after he flew a skull and crossbones flag outside his home for his daughter’s pirate-themed birthday party.
David Waterman, 41, faces legal action for refusing to remove the Jolly Roger flag he hoisted to celebrate his girl’s eighth birthday after a neighbour complained.
Under current UK laws, any flag flying outside a residential property has to have planning permission unless it is a national flag.
Waterman said: "It’s a £5 flag, not hurting anyone, and they’re probably spending hundreds of pounds of our cash getting me to take it down.
"That could be spent on improving the local area - it’s disgraceful." A spokesman for his local council said: "We received a complaint about the flag flying outside Mr. Waterman’s house and are duty-bound to investigate."
