ROCKER WAY CALLS FOR AN END TO `EMO’ ATTACKS IN MEXICO
MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE frontman GERARD WAY called for an end to violence against Mexican `emo’ fans during a concert in Mexico City on Saturday (12Apr08).
Way told the Zero Fest crowd he was appalled by the current wave of attacks against city teenagers who have adopted the dark, goth-like, dressed-down `emo’ look.
And he used the group’s performance as a platform to speak out.
He raged, "Recently we’ve been hearing a lot of stuff about some violence here in your country, having to do with kids who want to wear black T-shirts, or some kind of bulls**t stuff like that.
"We don’t want to see any f**king violence. We came here for one reason, and that’s to be at the f**king rrock show." Attacks on `emo’ fans in Mexico hit the headlines at the beginning of 2008 when the country’s media highlighted a growing hatred for the angry and confused adolescents. The emo attacks have reportedly spread to other South American countries.
My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy are among the bands connected to the `emo’ movement.
