Academy Award winner REESE WITHERSPOON surprised children at a school in New Orleans, Louisiana recently - by becoming a volunteer teacher for a day.
The kind-hearted mother-of-two visited the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School, where at-risk kids learn to become community leaders.
During her trip, which was filmed for upcoming American Idol charity special Idol Gives Back, Witherspoon helped the children study and at one point read a book to a class of students.
The Walk The Line star isn’t the only celebrity taking part in the U.S. TV special - Brad Pitt, Bono, John Legend, Snoop Dogg and Carrie Underwood will also feature during the show, which is set to air on 9 April (08).

Pop star-turned-sitcom secretary BRITNEY SPEARS has been offered a job working as a real receptionist for animal rights group People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (PETA).
Inspired by Spears’ recent performance as a secretary on U.S. comedy show How I Met Your Mother, PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk has made the Toxic singer a written job offer.
PETA bosses, who insist their offer isn’t an early April Fool’s Day (01Apr08) joke, are targetting Spears because she has previously worn fur and bought animals from pet stores.
Newkirk writes, "After seeing your excellent performance on How I Met Your Mother, PETA would like to offer you a real job as a receptionist.
"It could be for as little as an hour, and you would see - from the inside why we are so concerned about issues like fur and homeless dogs and cats.
"As a ‘thank you’ for your willingness to learn and help, we would donate $1,000 to a children’s charity."

KEITH RICHARDS has a warning for illusionist DAVID BLAINE ahead of his sleep-deprivation stunt - the rocker ended up with a broken nose when he stayed awake for nine days.
Blaine plans to go a record-breaking 13 days without sleep later this year (08).
Rolling Stone Richards claims he managed to stay awake for nine days back in the 1970s, thanks to a cocktail of narcotics - but the feat ended badly.
He reveals, "On the ninth day I was putting a tape into a tape deck. In 0.3 of a second I fell asleep and crashed head-first into a JVC speaker, smashing my nose apart. I just lay there and let it bleed. It was a chemical thing."

Singer/actress JESSICA SIMPSON has been hospitalised with a minor kidney infection.
The 27-year-old checked into Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Friday (28Mar08) complaining of "feeling achy" and suffering a "fever", reports U.S. publication In Touch Weekly.
Simpson has responded well to treatment and is expected to be released later on Monday (31Mar08), according to her representative.

KEITH RICHARDS was left bewildered when CHRISTINA AGUILERA joined THE ROLLING STONES to perform a song during their new MARTIN SCORSESE-directed concert film - because he had no idea who she was.
The guitarist looks a little puzzled on film as Aguilera takes the stage for a rendition of Live With Me in new rockumentary Shine A Light, and he freely admits he thought she was a fan invading the stage.
Richards says, "This girl came out and I was like, ‘Who is that?’ I had no idea.
"I’m still not sure who that is. She can sing, though. And she looked good."

JIM CARREY’s animated movie HORTON HEARS A WHO! is the world’s number one film after topping the international box office chart over the weekend (28-30Mar08).
The family cartoon, in which Carrey voices an elephant, climbs a place to lead the countdown of movie takings outside the U.S. with $13.2 million (£6.6 million).

MADONNA attributes her phenomenal success to the years she suffered at the hands of school bullies.
The Material Girl admits she was considered a "weirdo" during her high school days in the 1970s, but decided to use her classmates’ cruelty as a springboard to success.
She tells Vanity Fair magazine, "I wasn’t a hippie or a stoner, so I ended up being the weirdo.
"I was interested in classical ballet and music, so the kids were quite mean if you were different. I was one of those people that people were mean to.
"When that happened, instead of being a doormat, I decided to emphasise my differences. I didn’t shave my legs. I had hair growing under my arms. I refused to wear makeup, or fit the ideal of what a conventionally pretty girl would look like. So, of course, I was tortured even more."

BEYONCE KNOWLES’ manager/father MATHEW KNOWLES has laughed off reports his three-year-old grandson is to become the family’s latest star.
Singer Solange Knowles’ young son Daniel Julez has been part of rumoured negotiations for a new TV show on the Nickelodeon network - but his grandfather insists the reports are untrue.
He says, "Although there have been several discussions with Nickelodeon and (my company) Music World Kids… there has been absolutely no conversation regarding my grandson, Julez, and no plans to discuss Julez in entertainment in the near future.
"When my grandson is old enough to decide what his passion is in life, we will support his dreams wholeheartedly, but it has to be his dreams." Meanwhile, Mathew Knowles admits a TV venture featuring a toy range he and Solange created and developed last year (07) is on the slate.
He says, "(There’s an) announcement coming soon with an existing Nickelodeon franchise."

HOUSE star HUGH LAURIE hates talking to the press about his past - comparing the experience with putting his "testicles on a chopping board".
The British actor, who has previously admitted to suffering from clinical depression, tries to remain upbeat by focusing on the future.
But reporters like to delve into his background, and their questions often trigger a negative mood swing in Laurie.
He says, "Obviously you are in a very vulnerable position (when you give an interview). You are putting your testicles on a chopping board.
"I get anxious about a lot of things, that’s the trouble. I get anxious about everything. I just can’t stop thinking about things all the time.
"And here’s the really destructive part - it’s always retrospective. I waste time thinking of what I should have said or done. I can’t bear going through the same f**king dance of despair."

The desert retreat FRANK SINATRA dubbed Villa Maggio - after his character in FROM HERE TO ETERNITY - has been put up for sale.
The Palm Desert estate, which lies in the mountains above El Paseo, California, is on the market for $5 million (£2.5 million).
Sinatra lived at the property for 15 years and built a helicopter landing pad on the estate.

NICOLETTE SHERIDAN’s ex-boyfriend is set to reveal all about his romance with the actress and her "bitter flights" with her DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES co-stars in a new book.
Sheridan ditched Swedish personal trainer Nicklas Soderblom in 2005 when she began dating singer Michael Bolton.
Three years on, Soderblom has teamed up with journalist Bonnie Robinson and is trying to find a publisher for his tell-all book, reports the New York Post.
Robinson claims the book - Not A Desperate Houseman - contains "many, many insights" about "jealousies, fights, etc" on the Desperate Housewives set.
She describes Soderblom as "a man who fell passionately in love with a self-centered celebrity" and that Sheridan was "a stressed out middle-aged woman in Hollywood who sees Desperate Housewives as her last big break".
Robinson adds that the actress is "barely interested in sex; except as a means of manipulation to get what she wants. In fact, she couldn’t be more opposite in real life than the sexy Edie Britt she portrays on Desperate Housewives."

British rockers KASABIAN are following in MORRISSEY’s footsteps by protesting against Canada’s annual seal hunt.
Former The Smiths star Morrissey has long criticised the country for its yearly cull and has vowed never to perform in Canada while the practice is still in force.
And now Kasabian have signed a petition, launched by People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (PETA), which appeals against the Canadian government’s decision to allow the killing of baby harp seals.
Frontman Tom Meighan says, "I think it’s just common sense really, I mean, of course I don’t think it’s OK to smash a baby seal’s skull. I’d never wear fur, it’s such an ugly thing to do."

Rapper 50 CENT has vowed to continue putting out mixtapes for free, despite his label boss and close pal EMINEM advising him to stop doing so.
The Candy Shop hitmaker has released three mixtapes in the last six months, and recently let fans download his latest freestyles on The Elephant In The Room mixtape from his website free of charge.
But Shady Records CEO Eminem doesn’t approve of 50’s marketing methods.
50 tells MTV.com, "They think I’m crazy. Sometimes (Eminem) misses why I put it out. He goes, ‘Why did you put it out?’ "But I can’t be as hot as I’m gonna be if I don’t play around. I gotta spar before I go fight the champ. That’s my concept of it. If I don’t go out and make material and lock in (get fans’ response to his music), I’m not gonna make the best possible material for the next (official) project."

LATEST: ANNA NICOLE SMITH’s son DANIEL died from an accidental drug overdose, a jury looking into his death has ruled.
Daniel died in the Bahamas in September 2006, just three days after his mother Anna Nicole Smith gave birth to her daughter Dannielynn.
The inquest aimed to establish the 20-year-old’s exact cause of death, and, in the five months since its November (07) start, has heard testimony from Anna Nicole’s former lovers Larry Birkhead and Howard K. Stern, as well as a number of Daniel’s friends.
Autopsy results released in December (07) found Smith died as a result of a lethal combination of methadone and anti-depressants Zoloft and Lexapro.
Earlier this month (Mar08), the magistrate instructed the jury to discuss four possible options as the cause of death - accident, misadventure, non-dependent drug use and an open verdict - after banning the option of homicide.
The seven-member jury at a Nassau, Bahamas deliberated for less than two hours before delivering its verdict on Monday (31Mar08).
The jury has recommended no criminal charges be filed.

KNOCKED UP star KATHERINE HEIGL has dismissed reports she is to quit GREY’S ANATOMY, insisting her Hollywood career comes second to her role in the hit TV show.
The 29-year-old made her big-screen breakthrough in Judd Apatow’s 2007 romantic comedy and has since been hailed by critics as the next Julia Roberts.
It had been feared Heigl would abandon the medical drama in order to take advantage of her considerable film success, but she insists she’s looking forward to returning to her TV role as Dr. Isobel Stevens and won’t be leaving just yet.
She says, "When I come back to Grey’s, I am actually really excited. After nine months a year for four years, of course you’re going to think, ‘I want to be someone else for a while.’ "I landed really good things and I did them in my breaks. It broke up the monotony of the character and I’m very, very grateful for opportunities. But Grey’s is such a good cast. Everybody is amazing."

Hollywood actress RENEE ZELLWEGER would hate to be a journalist - because she wouldn’t be able to print negative stories about celebrities.
The Leatherheads star plays an undercover reporter in her latest role, and, despite training to be journalist before she took up a career in acting, insists she would hate the moral responsibility that comes with the job.
She tells Parade magazine, "I don’t know that I’d want that kind of responsibility of having the power to hurt someone with a public disclosure.
But, ironically, I intended to be a reporter before I got into acting.
"I majored in journalism, so it was kind of fun to explore that. But I could never write a story that would have a big, negative impact on somebody’s life.
I don’t think I’d sit well with that."

The photojournalist who inspired the Oscar-winning 1984 movie THE KILLING FIELDS has died at the age of 65.
Dith Pran survived the Cambodian genocide of the 1970s, while working as a translator and reporter for The New York Times.
He became the subject of the Roland Joffe movie, which won three Academy Awards, about the Khmer Rouge regime in the south-east Asian country.
Pran died on Sunday night (30Mar08) in a New Jersey hospital, just months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
