NOLAN SISTER SUFFERED SEXUAL ABUSE DURING CHILDHOOD
THE NOLAN SISTERS star ANNE NOLAN has opened up about the childhood abuse she suffered at the hands of her father - insisting the trauma eventually destroyed her marriage.
The 57-year-old claims dad Tommy Nolan began forcing himself on her when she was 11 and the abuse continued for years, sometimes on a daily basis, without the rest of the family realising what was happening.
The Irish star hid the secret even as The Nolan Sisters found fame in the U.K. - but it was not until after her father’s death in 1998 that the eldest sibling was able to confide to her sisters about her ordeal.
In her new autobiography Anne’s Song, she writes: "They (her sisters) just sat there open-mouthed - they couldn’t believe what they were hearing.
Incomprehension gradually gave way to anger, directed at him." And the abuse eventually undermined the singer’s 27-year marriage to professional soccer player Brian Wilson, who was overcome with guilt that he had allowed their young children, Amy and Alex, to be looked after by their grandfather. The couple divorced in 2007.
She adds: "What a terrible violation of a vulnerable child. I don’t know how he (Tommy) could look at me - and himself - after he’d done it. I’m convinced Mum knew nothing about it. I think it might have killer her if she had. All that followed - and we were to have a fabulous career as The Nolans - is tainted by what he did. He killed stone-dead the love a daughter should feel for her father." The Nolan Sisters enjoyed global success before eventually disbanding in 2005.
