ATONEMENT emerged victorious at London’s Empire Awards on Sunday (09Mar08), taking home three prizes including Best British Film.
The drama also netted its stars James McAvoy and Keira Knightley the trophies for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively at U.K
. movie magazine Empire’s annual awards ceremony.
Elsewhere, Best Film went to Matt Damon sequel The Bourne Ultimatum, while David Yates took home Best Director for Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix.
Hot Fuzz was named Best Comedy and American Gangster claimed the Best Thriller prize.
Control, a biopic of late Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis, won two awards - Best Newcomer for star Sam Reilly and Best Soundtrack.
Scottish actor Ewan McGregor was honoured with the Empire Icon Award.

The father of late actor HEATH LEDGER has vowed to make sure the star’s young daughter MATILDA and ex-fiancee MICHELLE WILLIAMS are financially "taken care of", after they were left out of his will.
The Brokeback Mountain star, 28, was found dead in his New York City apartment in January (08) after suffering an accidental drug overdose.
Details of Ledger’s will - filed in Australia in April 2003 - were revealed on Saturday (08Mar08), in which he leaves everything to his parents Kim and Sally and his older sister Kate.
A series of documents filed in Manhattan, New York’s Surrogate’s Court, obtained by the New York Daily News, shows Ledger had less than $145,000 (£72,500)-worth of assets in New York at the time, including a $25,000 (12,500) Toyota Prius and $20,000 (£10,000) in furniture.
But the will was compiled before Ledger made the Oscar-winning Brokeback Mountain in 2005, when he met his fiancee-to-be Williams - the mother of two-year-old Matilda.
However, both Ledger’s representative Mara Buxbaum and his dad Kim have dismissed speculation Williams and little Matilda will not be provided for, reports People.com.
Buxbaum says, "The story is getting taken out of context and media is speculating that this means Matilda and Michelle will not be taken care of. I want to make it very clear nothing could be farther from the truth." And in a statement released on Saturday afternoon, Kim adds: "Matilda is our absolute priority and Michelle is an integral part of our family. They will be taken care of and that’s how Heath would want it to be." Ledger and Williams split in September 2007.

Actress SIENNA MILLER is to marry boyfriend RHYS IFANS after his third proposal, according to reports.
The Factory Girl star is said to be planning a summer wedding with the 39-year-old actor, who first asked for Miller’s hand in marriage in August (07) by sending her a cryptic message in Welsh, his first language, which read: "Marry the Misfit." He proposed for a second time in December (07) at her 26th birthday party by hiding an engagement ring in a pile of gifts.
But it proved to be third time lucky for the Notting Hill star after Miller accepted his proposal earlier this month (Mar08).
And the one-year couple is reportedly keen to keep their forthcoming nuptials low-key.
A source tells British newspaper the Sunday Mirror, "Rhys has admitted he and Sienna are getting married
. Everything is supposed to be hush-hush, but Rhys is over the moon and finding it hard to keep quiet
. He can’t believe she finally said yes.
"Although Si and Rhys have a lot of famous friends, they will keep it low-key

Hollywood star TOM CRUISE’s marriage to KATIE HOLMES was set up by the Church of Scientology after a series of fake casting calls for actresses including JENNIFER GARNER and JESSICA ALBA failed to deliver a suitable wife, according to sensational new claims by a former Scientologist.
Cruise and Holmes wed in a fairytale ceremony in Italy in 2006 after a whirlwind 20-month romance and have one-year-old daughter Suri together.
But ex-Scientologist Marc Headley - who used to produce promotional films for the controversial religion - claims Holmes was set up with the Mission: Impossible star after he split from Penelope Cruz in 2004 after three years together.
Headley alleges Scientology leader David Miscavige organised an audition process for potential wives disguised as a casting call for a new movie in which Cruise was the leading man.
He tells British tabloid News of the World, "After that (splitting from Cruz), he started complaining to his best buddy David about his luck with girls
. So Miscavige assigned a high-ranking official with the order: ‘Find a wife for Tom Cruise.’ "The official put out a casting call to female actresses, including Scientologists, saying, ‘There’s an upcoming Tom Cruise movie you might get a part in
. Come for an audition.’ But in the end no movie was made
. They had to be single, they had to be pretty and in their 20s.
"First they rounded up Scientologist actresses like Erica Christensen, Erica Howard and Sofia Milos
. But they were all rejected." The unnamed official then tried to lure Electra star Garner - who had just started dating Ben Affleck at the time - with the beauty ranked top of the priority list, before Holmes was spotted gushing about Cruise and called to Los Angeles to meet the actor.
Headley adds, "Then..
. they went for Jennifer Garner, Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Alba, in that order
. They came up with the same plan
. Jennifer and Jessica didn’t bite but Scarlett took the bait and came in for an audition.
When she arrived at the audition address and found out it was the Scientology Center in Hollywood she freaked out and didn’t do a tape…

MADONNA was left stunned by her daughter LOURDES’ caring and sharing efforts during the pair’s first trip to Malawi, revealing the trip made her realise she was mother to an amazing human.
The pop superstar took her daughter to the African nation just after launching a charity drive there - and she was amazed by the then-10-year-old’s willingness to help AIDS-stricken orphans.
Madonna admits the Malawi adventure gave her a new respect for children.
She tells America’s Interview magazine, "She spent several weeks working in the orphanages, particularly one with newborn children, and most of them were HIV-positive.
"She so came into her own and was so responsible and stayed for eight hours every day and worked tirelessly. I thought, ‘Why am I babying her so much? She’s capable of so much more.’ "We don’t let kids do anything. We think, ‘Oh, they’re kids - they can’t take care of other kids; they can’t do this; they can’t do that.’ And after you go to Africa, you drop all that silliness." On a subsequent trip to Malawi, Madonna fell for a little orphan called David Banda. She has since adopted the African child.

Pop superstar MADONNA has infuriated the biological father of her adopted Malawian son DAVID BANDA by insisting the child would be dead if she hadn’t rescued him.
The Vogue hitmaker and her director husband Guy Ritchie caused outrage in the African country in 2006 after she brought two-year-old Banda back to Britain, amid claims the couple side-stepped the official adoption process.
And the singer is set for more controversy after saying in the upcoming issue of U.S. magazine Interview: "He (David) wouldn’t have lived if I hadn’t taken him. It’s not even a possibility." But the remark has reportedly left Yohane Banda, the toddler’s peasant farmer father, "stunned", with a source close to the Malawian family telling U.K.
newspaper The People: "Madonna should choose her words a bit more carefully. To say these things about David’s life before she adopted him is just not right." It is possible Madonna’s comment could be examined at next month’s (Apr08) hearing at a Malawian court, where an official decision over the adoption case will be made by a human rights panel.

Fallen star TOM SIZEMORE is hoping to stage a major comeback after battling a series of legal and drug problems - with a new TV drama.
The Black Hawk Down star has been offered the chance to bounce back after a career-threatening jail spell as the star of a groundbreaking new action/adventure internet and TV series called The Acquirer.
Sizemore will play a mysterious ex-CIA agent opposite the show’s director and star Matt Schulze, who plays a master thief.
The actor says, "I’ve been away from filming for a while now, and it feels great getting back in front of the cameras again.
"Matt is a powerful presence in this series, both in front of and behind the camera, and I am truly grateful that he has welcomed me to The Acquirer so openly.
"I plan on giving him, and my fans, the best I have to offer. I’m back, and I’m having a great time." And Schulze says, "I am extremely happy to welcome Tom as a series regular on The Acquirer. He’s a great talent who brings intensity and determination to every role he plays." The first episode of the multi-media series, which airs in the U.S. later this month (Mar08), was shot in Paris, France and the globe-trotting action drama is now heading for locations in San Francisco, California and Rome, Italy.
Sizemore was released early from a 16-month prison sentence in December (07).
He was incarcerated for eight months after violating his probation in relation to a 2004 methamphetamine conviction.

British comedian DAVID WALLIAMS has reportedly been caught on CCTV footage enjoying a raunchy romp with a stripper at an exclusive London lap-dancing club.
The actor, who found fame on U.K. TV hit Little Britain, was visiting the private gentlemen’s club on Tuesday night (04Mar08) when he laid eyes on the busty blonde.
Walliams was then escorted to a VIP area at the back of the club where staff removed the lightbulb before leaving the couple in the dark room.
In video tape footage obtained by British tabloid News of the World, Walliams can apparently be seen relaxing on a couch as he is given a private dance by the scantily-clad woman, before she strips off her bra and underpants and teases the 36-year-old.

The Hollywood premiere of children’s movie HORTON HEARS A WHO! was turned into a protest on Saturday (08Mar08) when a group of pro-life activists crashed the event to campaign against abortion.
Campaigners were overheard shouting the message of the film, an adaptation of the 1954 Dr Seuss story, which is based on the motto: "After all, a person is a person, no matter how small." After chanting, the group put red tape labelled with the word "life" over their mouths and proceeded to parade around the Mann Village Theater, where the film’s stars Steve Carell and Jim Carrey were in attendance, reports TMZ.com.

British actress SAMANTHA MORTON was left close to death after suffering a severe stroke two years ago - which almost brought her successful career to an abrupt end.
The Golden Globe-winning actress has spoken out for the first time about the debilitating illness - which has remained a secret, until now - which left her unable to walk after part of the ceiling of her new home collapsed on top of her in 2006.
As a result of the incident, Morton pulled out of the thriller Transiberian and was replaced by fellow Brit Emily Mortimer as she took a year-and-a-half break from acting to recuperate from her head injuries.
But her health crisis was a lot worse than the public had been led to believe - a few days after the accident, she had a stroke brought on by the impact of the ceiling collapse, and she was left almost bedridden after losing control of her legs.
But with the support of her friends and family, she soon learned to walk again and has since made a full recovery.
However, she credits her close pal Jason Pierce - the singer from rock band Spiritualized - with helping her to overcome her bad health after his own life-threatening experience with pneumonia.
She says, "Jason and I have been mirroring each other. He was really sick and then I had a stroke at the beginning of (that) year.
"He was the only person I knew who understood what that was like, being near to death. He’s just an incredible person. He’s very courageous, and he helped me get through it all." Morton is now back to full health and in January (08) gave birth to a daughter, Edie, with filmmaker fiance Harry Holm.

MILEY CYRUS has sent respected U.S. broadcaster BARBARA WALTERS a golden toilet bowl as a quirky gift.
The toilet at the Cyrus home overflowed after one of Walters’ crew members used it during an interview taped for the TV host’s Oscar night special last month (Feb08).
Walters felt terrible about the incident, telling The Huffington Post blog, "When one overflowed, the whole plumbing system went wrong in the house, and all the toilets overflowed." And, just to prove there are no hard feelings, the Cyrus family have sent Walters a golden toilet figurine with the note, "So you’ll always remember the Cyrus family."

Hip-hop mogul RUSSELL SIMMONS’ ex-wife KIMORA LEE SIMMONS is reportedly pregnant - with the child of actor DJIMON HOUNSOU.

THE NOLAN SISTERS star ANNE NOLAN has opened up about the childhood abuse she suffered at the hands of her father - insisting the trauma eventually destroyed her marriage.
The 57-year-old claims dad Tommy Nolan began forcing himself on her when she was 11 and the abuse continued for years, sometimes on a daily basis, without the rest of the family realising what was happening.
The Irish star hid the secret even as The Nolan Sisters found fame in the U.K. - but it was not until after her father’s death in 1998 that the eldest sibling was able to confide to her sisters about her ordeal.
In her new autobiography Anne’s Song, she writes: "They (her sisters) just sat there open-mouthed - they couldn’t believe what they were hearing.
Incomprehension gradually gave way to anger, directed at him." And the abuse eventually undermined the singer’s 27-year marriage to professional soccer player Brian Wilson, who was overcome with guilt that he had allowed their young children, Amy and Alex, to be looked after by their grandfather. The couple divorced in 2007.
She adds: "What a terrible violation of a vulnerable child. I don’t know how he (Tommy) could look at me - and himself - after he’d done it. I’m convinced Mum knew nothing about it. I think it might have killer her if she had. All that followed - and we were to have a fabulous career as The Nolans - is tainted by what he did. He killed stone-dead the love a daughter should feel for her father." The Nolan Sisters enjoyed global success before eventually disbanding in 2005.
