A leading celebrity skin expert has urged AMY WINEHOUSE to seek a second opinion for her swollen cheek, fearing she has something far worse than impetigo.
A spokeswoman for the Rehab singer on Monday (03Mar08) revealed the British star’s swelling is the result of the highly contagious skin disease, and the 24-year-old is on antibiotics.
But top U.S. skin doctor Vail Reese, who hasn’t treated Winehouse, suggests the singer is actually suffering from Staph Aureus.
Dr. Reese insists this is more of a problem - and antibiotics won’t help.
He tells WENN, "While it is certainly possible that Winehouse is fending off a routine case of skin strep (impetigo), certain aspects are not typical.
"Usually strep impetigo is seen in children, who are still developing a mature immune system. The affected area may be red and tender but not usually swollen.
"The appearance of Winehouse’s markedly bloated cheek raises the possibility of an infection with Strep’s sinister cousin, Staph Aureus. This pesky pest tends to cause more swelling and blistering than strep, and commonly affects adults.
"Certain strains have developed a resistance to certain antibiotics and can be particularly hard to clear… and surgical drainage of the swollen area may be necessary. I’m definitely seeing a rise in Staph Aureus at my clinic."

ANNA NICOLE SMITH’s baby daughter DANNIELYNN has been named the late star’s sole heir.
A Los Angeles judge made the ruling after Smith’s boyfriend and executor Howard K. Stern appealed for clarification of the former Playboy model’s will, which was drafted in 2001 five years before Dannielynn was born.
Judge Mitchell L. Beckloff declared that the 18-month-old is the only heir, and established a trust on her behalf, which will be governed by Stern and her biological father Larry Birkhead.
The ruling means Dannielynn stands to inherit the estate of Smith’s former husband, billionaire J. Howard Marshall. Marshall left Smith much of his fortune, but his family is currently contesting the will.
Smith died of an accidental drug overdose in February 2007.

Actress REESE WITHERSPOON has launched a global United Nations campaign to end violence against women.
The Walk The Line star, who is cosmetics giant Avon’s Global Ambassador to promote women’s empowerment, kicked off the beauty company’s new partnership with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) on Tuesday (04Mar08).
Avon is selling Women’s Empowerment Bracelets online for $3 (£1.50) each to benefit UNIFEM.
Witherspoon said, "Every purchase of the bracelet will help empower women 100 per cent of the profits will go directly to the Avon Empowerment Fund to support UNIFEM in their work to end violence against women.
"I hope to see this bracelet on the wrists of women all around the world as a sign of solidarity and hope that one day every woman will be empowered and live a life free from violence."

STAR TREK star PATRICK STEWART is returning to Broadway in a production of WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’s MACBETH.
The thespian will star in the play at New York’s Lyceum Theater from 8 April (08), six months after conquering London’s West End as the tragic king.
It’s not the first time Stewart has performed on the New York stage - he has previously starred in Broadway productions of The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

STEVE CARELL was left red-faced during a TV appearance on Tuesday (04Mar08) because he was wearing the same clothes as he was in footage that aired on the show.
The funnyman was midway through an interview on U.S. television’s Today programme when a clip of him in a studio voicing his character in new animated movie Horton Hears A Who was screened.
And Carell was shocked to realise he had on the exact same suede jacket and pair of jeans.
Watching the footage, Carell said, "Do you know what I’m noticing? I’m wearing the same jacket.
"I need to get some new clothes. That is so embarrassing."

Actress VALERIE BERTINELLI has blamed GISELE BUNDCHEN and her supermodel pals for modern eating disorder trends - because the leading fashion names are doing nothing to promote a healthy image.
The Jenny Craig weightloss spokeswoman insists too many girls and young women are starving themselves to emulate "skinny" catwalk stars, and the models fail to understand that sizes zero and two are not the norm.
Bertinelli tells Ladies Home Journal magazine, "When there were several of those models dying from anorexia and I read that Gisele Bundchen said something about it’s not being the designers’ fault but the parents’ fault, I was like, ‘Well now, wait a minute, Miss Skinny Girl.’ "(I said), ‘Designers do have something to do with this because they hire women like you.’ "There was one designer who was proud of herself because she hired models that were a size four. And when asked why she didn’t hire a (size) six or eight, she said, ‘Because the clothes don’t look good. They don’t hang right.’ "Aren’t you supposed to design clothes that look good on real women?"

LATEST: VAMPIRE WEEKEND drummer CHRIS THOMPSON is recovering from a head injury sustained after he was hit by a car with the help of veteran rocker TOM PETTY.
The U.S. star was involved in a collision with a vehicle outside the Hoxton Hotel in London following last Thursday’s (28Feb08) NME Awards, and taken to the Royal London Hospital.
And now the percussionist is recovering with the aid of takeaway food and some words of wisdom from Petty’s 1996 song Walls.
Thompson writes on the band’s MySpace.com webpage: "I would sincerely like to thank everyone who lent me their support and good vibes. I feel incredibly lucky to have sustained only minor injuries, and would also like to thank the Royal London Hospital (Dr. Lewinsohn!) for taking care of me.
"I’m currently recuperating with a steady diet of Nando’s chicken and Tom Petty, who, appropriately, pointed out that even walls fall down."

Canadian electronic rockers CRYSTAL CASTLES have cancelled eight concerts after singer ALICE GLASS was left with two broken two ribs after a car accident.
Glass received hospital treatment for her injuries after she was struck by a vehicle on Saturday (01Mar08).
The group is expected to return to touring at the South By Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas on 14 March (08).
Bandmate Ethan Kath says, "It’s a bit of a disaster… The doctor said she needs six weeks off but she wants to start playing again next week."

Country singer MINDY McCREADY cringes every time she recalls her tearful interview on TV show OPRAH last year (07) - because she swore undying love to the boyfriend who almost beat her to death.
McCready’s ex, Billy McKnight, was jailed for his savage and bloody attack on the singer, but that didn’t stop her from sitting down with Oprah Winfrey and telling the talk show host she still loved her former boyfriend.
Winfrey attempted to reason with McCready as the singer sobbed about her feelings for incarcerated McKnight.
But, after her own recent six-month jail sentence for violating probation gave her the chance to think about her life, McCready admits her Oprah appearance is one of the many things she’s ashamed of.
McCready says, "That whole Oprah show is so embarrassing for me to look at now. There I was still pining over someone that tried to kill me." And the singer, who was once engaged to TV Superman Dean Cain, admits she’s now convinced the only positive thing to come out of her relationship with McKnight was their son Zander.
She adds, "Billy and I made a beautiful child together and it was definitely by far… the only good thing in that relationship."

GNARLS BARKLEY’s new video has been banned from U.S. TV after failing the Harding Test, which monitors strobe effects that trigger epileptic seizures.
The promo for Run, which features a cameo from Justin Timberlake, will only be available online until director Happy can make changes that meet guidelines established to prevent TV images from disturbing epileptic viewers.
Gnarls Barkley star Danger Mouse tells Billboard.com, "We’re having issues (with the video). I think it’s cool. It works for me. But I’m not necessarily that easily seasick.
"We can’t predict how people are going to interpret it."

KENNY CHESNEY is leading the charge at the annual Academy Of Country Music Awards after landing 11 nominations.
The 39-year-old is up for prizes including Entertainer Of The Year, which he has previously won three times, Top Male Vocalist and Album Of The Year for If You’re Going Through Hell.

BJORK has upset Chinese officials by calling for Tibetan independence during her first show in the country.
The defiant Icelandic singer yelled "Tibet" throughout her politically-charged Declare Independence song at the end of her first concert in Shanghai on Sunday (02Mar08).
In doing so, Bjork opposed the beliefs of Chinese political leaders, who insist Tibet is an integral part of their country.
Angry Chinese officials have made their thoughts and feelings clear in a number of website posts following the gig, while Bjork fans have called her comments "very brave".
Others suggest this will be Bjork’s first and last mainland China show as a result of her remarks.
Last week (ends29Feb08) reports circulated that Bjork had been dropped from the line-up of Serbian music festival Exit after she allegedly made pro-Kosovan remarks at a concert in Japan.
The promoter of the event has dismissed the reports.

Pop star LILY ALLEN no longer enjoys partying in London - because she has little in common with her fellow clubbers now she’s quit alcohol.

Allen suffered a tragic miscarriage in January (08), but chose to continue with her sobriety - even though it has isolated her from her pals.
And the 22-year-old admits she is starting to get sick of her own company.

Soccer star and humanitarian DAVID BECKHAM has visited sick children in hospital during a charity trip to China.
In his role as goodwill ambassador for the United Nation Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Beckham surprised young leukaemia patients at the Xinhua Hospital in Shanghai.
The trip forms part of Beckham’s soccer tour of the far east with his team Los Angeles Galaxy. In January (08), he visited Sierra Leone with UNICEF to play soccer with poverty-stricken kids.

BILLY RAY CYRUS has denied reports he deleted LINDSAY LOHAN’s number from his daughter MILEY’s cellphone - insisting he "loves" the troubled star.
The pair were alleged to have met at the Grammys last month (Feb08) and exchanged digits, which were later erased by protective father Billy Ray.
However, speaking on KIIS-FM radio, he told host Ryan Seacrest, "We love Lindsay." And Cyrus senior added he’s just one of the 15-year-old’s pals, as well as her father: "I wanna be the person (Miley) wants to talk to. I just want to be one of those friends."

Heist movie THE BANK JOB has stolen the top spot in the U.K box office beating WILL FERRELL’s SEMI-PRO into second place.
The Jason Statham-starring film about a 1971 bank robbery covered up by the British Government took $1.9 million (£951,013), against the basketball comedy’s $1.55 million (£774,698). After two weeks in the number one spot, Jumper has plunged to number three, taking $1.52 million (£758,003).
The top five’s third new release, An Accidental Husband, is at number four, with $1.41 million (£703,631), while Oscar-winning movie Juno fell to five with $1.38 million (£690,686).
Last week’s number three movie, Rambo, plummeted to number nine. It is thought British cinema chain Odeon’s ban on screening Rambo, owing to undisclosed "commercial reasons", has considerably affected the film’s positioning.
