Chilean opera singer ERNESTO ‘TITO’ BELTRAN has been convicted of rape by a Swedish court and sentenced to two years in prison.
The tenor, who has lived in Sweden for over 20 years, was found guilty of raping an 18-year-old nanny employed by actress Maria Lundqvist during a 1999 tour.
Beltran had denied the offence, which was not reported until 2007, by claiming he was the victim of a smear campaign He was also ordered to pay his victim $17,000 (£8,500) in damages.
Beltran plans to appeal the verdict.
