Troubled pop star BRITNEY SPEARS has failed to regain visitation rights to her children after an emergency custody hearing in Los Angeles.
The singer had been due to make a desperate plea to a judge at L.A. County Courthouse to allow her to see her sons but arrived at the building and then left before entering the courtroom.
And her absence may have affected the outcome as it has been reported that the star’s current visitation rights will remain the same, according to TMZ.com. The star allegedly entered the building through the basement to avoid the waiting paparazzi but turned and fled soon afterwards, without going into the room where the hearing was taking place.
A member of Spears’ legal team told a court official, "I don’t know whether she’ll be here or not. I don’t want to delay the hearing." The star’s ex-husband Kevin Federline arrived on time and was sworn into the session before the media were cleared from the room.
Spears was stripped of all her custody and visitation rights to Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, one, earlier this month (Jan08) following a string of bizarre incidents including an apparent breakdown which saw the star hospitalised under a mental health order.
The singer’s lawyers reportedly scheduled Wednesday’s (23Jan08) hearing to ask for Spears to be allowed "monitored visitation in a therapeutic setting".
It had been feared the Toxic hitmaker would not attend the session after she missed a previous hearing earlier this month (Jan08) . Spears’ actions on Wednesday (23Jan08) mirror those of 14 January (08) when she arrived at Los Angeles Superior Court for a crucial custody hearing, but left without entering the courthouse.

Fellow Australians CATE BLANCHETT and GEOFFREY RUSH have paid tribute to HEATH LEDGER after learning of his death at the age of 28.
Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment on Tuesday (22Jan08) after suffering a suspected drug overdose.
Blanchett - who recently starred alongside Ledger in Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There - says, "I am shocked and very saddened by the news. I deeply respect Heath’s work and always admired his continuing development as an artist. My thoughts are with his family and his close friends." Rush, who appeared alongside the late star in 2006 Australian independent movie Candy, adds, "This is such a sad event. I admired Heath enormously. He was such a sensitive and committed and daring actor. This truly is a tragedy." He was an amazing man, an incredible actor and I can’t believe this has happened."

JOHN CLEESE’s second marriage failed because he couldn’t get over the death of a number of close friends, according to reports.
The Monty Python star announced earlier this month that he and his wife, psychotherapist Alyce Faye Eichelberger, were divorcing after 19 years of marriage.
The split was caused by a "period of melancholy" brought on by the funerals of several of Cleese’s pals, sources tell the Sydney Daily Telegraph.
A friend tells the newspaper, "They just have felt that the relationship is not going to continue and I think they are very sad but fairly resolved about it."

U.S. President GEORGE W. BUSH has postponed a campaign against prescription drug abuse, following the death of actor HEATH LEDGER.
Bush was scheduled to launch an ad campaign at the White House on Wednesday (23Jan08) to raise the awareness of abuse of prescription painkillers.
But White House press secretary Dana Perina reveals the event has been rescheduled because it falls just a day after Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment after suffering a suspected drug overdose.
Perino says, "We thought it would be better to postpone the event, rather than run the risk of anyone thinking that we were being opportunistic in highlighting the issue."

THE ROLLING STONES star RONNIE WOOD has flouted the U.K. smoking ban for a second time - by lighting up at KATE MOSS’ recent birthday celebrations. The rocker was reportedly asked by staff not to smoke inside London’s Punk nightclub in Soho but ignored their pleas - telling them to "f**k off", according to British magazine Closer.
The 60-year-old star was at the venue last Wednesday (16Jan08) celebrating the 34th birthday of supermodel Kate Moss, along with his wife Jo and a select group of the catwalk beauty’s close friends.

Scottish singer KT TUNSTALL has snubbed the chance to duet with AMERICAN IDOL star KATHERINE McPHEE - because she hates reality TV pop stars.
McPhee performed Tunstall’s hit Black Horse and the Cherry Tree during her run to the programme’s season five finale and admitted she would love the chance to record with her idol.
But Tunstall says, "I’m not a big fan of the reality TV-show-pop-star thing.
It chokes the market in terms of young original talent. There’s a strong element of karaoke in pop TV shows.

Rapper LIL’ WAYNE has been arrested on suspicion of a series of drug offences.
The hip-hop star - real name Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. - was detained by police in Arizona early on Wednesday (23Jan08) morning when his tour bus was pulled over and searched by the U.S. border patrol.
He was arrested on three felony counts - possession of dangerous drugs, possession of narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to TMZ.com.
The website have also reported that the arrest was carried out in connection with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.
Carter is currently in the custody of the Yuma County, Arizona, Sheriff’s Department awaiting arraignment.
The 25-year-old was previously arrested on drugs charges in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2006. He is also currently facing illegal gun possession charges and is due to appear in court in New York on 25 February

Troubled rapper BUSTA RHYMES has escaped jail after a judge handed him a fine and three years probation on charges of assault and driving under the influence.
The hip-hop star, real name Trevor Smith, entered a plea of not guilty to four separate charges, according to TMZ.com.
Two assault charges relate to separate incidents in 2006 after the star was accused of beating fan LeBron James on Randall’s Island, New York in July (06) and his driver Eddie Hatchett in December (06).
The judge sentenced Smith to three years probation - he will spend a year in jail if he violates the terms - and also issued an order of protection for the victims.
Smith was fined $750 (£350) and ordered to enrol in a drunk-driving program relating to the DUI charge. And the final charge - driving with a suspended licence - will see the rapper give up his driver’s licence for six months. The driving charges relate to two incidents last year (07). Last February (07), he was arrested for driving on a suspended license and aggravated driving, then three months later (May07), he was stopped again and charged with driving while ability impaired and driving while intoxicated.

HEATH LEDGER’s supermodel ex-girlfriend HELENA CHRISTENSEN was on her way to visit the star when she discovered he had died.
Christensen had stayed close to the Brokeback Mountain star following their brief fling last September (07), and she claims she left him a phone message and was heading to his Soho apartment when news of his death from a suspected drug overdose broke on Tuesday (22Jan08) afternoon.
The 39-year-old tells PageSix.com, "I am just beyond sad at this point and shocked. I was on my way over to pay him a visit when I found out. I had just left him a message and heard his voice on the machine. He was such a special and genuine person, so extraordinarily talented because he was so raw and honest with his feelings.
"He was so full of life, so electric. This is immensely sad." Actress Naomi Watts, who dated Ledger from 2002 to 2004, yesterday withdrew from all Sundance Film Festival interviews and engagements after learning of the actor’s death.

LATEST: An autopsy on the body of tragic actor HEATH LEDGER has failed to reveal how the star died.
The Brokeback Mountain star, 28, was found dead in the bedroom of his New York apartment on Tuesday afternoon (22Jan08).
Police believe his death is drug-related, as sleeping pills were found strewn around his home, but it has also been reported that the star was suffering from pneumonia at the time.
And now U.S. medical examiners, who carried out an autopsy on Ledger’s body on Wednesday (23Jan08), have announced that their findings were inconclusive. Officials will now have to wait for the results of a series of toxicology tests which may hold further clues into what caused the 28-year-old’s death. A spokesman for the medical examiner assigned to the case insists it may take up to 10 days to conclude their investigation.

SPICE GIRLS star MELANIE BROWN is planning to wed her husband STEPHEN BELAFONTE for a second time later this year (08).

Hollywood star NICOLAS CAGE once escaped death on a U.S. highway - after his car spun out of control and he ended up facing traffic head on.
The 44-year-old insists he is a thrill-seeker who normally doesn’t fear "heights, speed, water or any dangerous situation" - but the experience was so frightening he was left in a state of shock for days afterwards.
He recalls, "I nearly killed myself in my favourite car. I had an Austin Healey with a Ford V8 engine placed into it like a makeshift AC Cobra. Then I hired a mechanic to put in an automatic gearbox.
"I was driving on the 405 (highway) in Hollywood, went to light a cigarette and my hand got stuck in the transmission. I shifted the car from drive into park and the car fish-tailed on the freeway. I went into a 180-degree spin and ended up facing traffic head on. "All I could see was this huge truck coming towards me; the driver got on the CB loudspeaker and screamed at me to put the car in reverse. I was in total shock and I just did it. I reversed all the way back until I found an exit. It was crazy. I could have died - so for awhile I was in a very odd state of mind.
It’s probably the most dangerous thing I’ve survived."

Hollywood actor NICOLAS CAGE has hit back after KATHLEEN TURNER accused him of behaving like a diva when they starred in 1986 comedy PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED.
The film - which earned Turner a Best Actress Oscar nomination - was directed by Cage’s uncle Francis Ford Coppola and Turner insisted the actor went to great lengths to disobey his famous relative.
In her forthcoming autobiography, Send Yourself Roses, Turner, writes, "Everything Francis (Ford Coppola) wanted him (Cage) to do, he went against to show that he wasn’t under his uncle’s wing. "Which was ridiculous. Oh, that stupid voice of his and the fake teeth! Honestly, I cringe to think about it. He caused so many problems." She also went on to accuse the Face/Off star of getting in troubled with the police while they were filming.
She adds, "He was arrested twice for drunk driving and, I think, once for stealing a dog. He’d come across a Chihuahua he liked and stuck it in his jacket." But Cage, insists the 53-year-old’s book is inaccurate.
He tells New York Post gossip column PageSix, "While I recall Kathleen Turner being a great lady and wonderful actress, the credibility of her biography and her memory is at stake . . . Fact credibility should have been exercised on (her) part."

Actress GWYNETH PALTROW has vowed to stay away from the U.S. after a recent traumatic confrontation with photographers in New York.
