TOM CRUISE’s movie studio has made a breakthrough with striking writers after agreeing a deal with the picketers to allow people to go back to work on feature films.
United Artists, owned by the actor and his longtime partner Paula Wagner, managed to negotiate an interim deal with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) which will see the studio resume production on a number of their new projects.
The deal is said to be similar to that of U.S. talkshow host David Letterman, who returned to the air earlier this week (ends04Jan08) after securing backing from the WGA.
Neither party has confirmed the reports, but a formal announcement is expected to be made on Monday (07Jan08), according to industry publication the Daily Variety.
However, the deal does not include moviehouse MGM - the majority owner of United Artists.
The WGA members have been on strike over royalties since November (07).

AMY WINEHOUSE will not face any charges in relation to a bribery plot involving her jailed husband BLAKE FIELDER-CIVIL.
The Rehab singer was released on bail in December (07) after turning herself in at a London police station for questioning on the suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
Fielder-Civil is currently being held on remand at London’s Pentonville Prison and is awaiting trial on a similar charge after he attempted to fix the outcome of his trial for grievous bodily harm.
He is alleged to have assaulted barman James King in June last year (06), and stands accused of trying to pay off King with $400,000 (£200,000) and a free holiday in return for withdrawing his statement.
Winehouse was initially believed to have offered finance for the deal, but the charges against her were dropped this week (ends04Jan08) due to lack of evidence.
Meanwhile, Fielder-Civil has been placed in solitary confinement after prison guards found him getting drunk behind bars and making calls on a cell phone he had smuggled into the jail, reports British newspaper the News of the World.

Hollywood beauty REESE WITHERSPOON has been named the most-likeable female celebrity in a new poll.
The Walk The Line Oscar winner, 30, beat Jennifer Aniston to the top spot with 74 per cent to the former Friends actress’ 70 per cent in the survey of more than 1,000 women aged 13 and over. Participants were asked to judge which celebrities, from a list of the 10 women who regularly graced magazine covers and gossip columns in 2007, they found the most appealing, confident, glamorous, interesting and over-exposed, among other qualities.
Angelina Jolie came in third position with 53 per cent, closely followed by singer/actress Jennifer Lopez in fourth place with 52 per cent. Tom Cruise’s wife, Katie Holmes, also makes it into the top five with a mere 32 per cent.
Meanwhile, on the other end of the scale, Paris Hilton edged out Britney Spears to be voted the least appealing star with a 9 per cent likeability rating to the Toxic singer’s 11, while the hotel heiress topped the list for most over-exposed celebrity with 75 per cent to Spears’ 68 per cent.

BRITNEY SPEARS refused to return her children to her ex-husband KEVIN FEDERLINE on Thursday night (03Jan08) because she feared her youngest son had become a victim of child abuse.
Spears was involved in a major stand-off with emergency services outside her Beverly Hills, California, mansion on Thursday when she reportedly barricaded herself in the bathroom with one-year-old Jayden James.
But according to British newspaper the Sunday Mirror, Spears was acting in defence of her children, who she believed were being abused while in the care of their father.
A source says, "When the kids arrived, she says Jayden’s legs were covered in bruises. He’s a toddler and learning to walk so it’s not that surprising - but Britney was terrified he was being abused.
"After a few hours Ronnie the bodyguard arrived to take the kids back to Kevin, but she went berserk and refused to hand them over. No one knew what to do and she got more and more stressed about handing the kids back…
"That’s when Britney started to panic. She kept the children behind her and told no one to touch them. She demanded to see Kevin and told Ronnie to get him to the house there and then. That was never going to happen…" Spears was later taken to Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for a mental evaluation, where she remained until Saturday afternoon (05Jan08), when she checked herself out to return home with her father Jamie.
Federline has temporarily been given "sole legal custody and sole physical custody" of the kids following an emergency hearing on Friday (04Jan08). The custody order lasts until 14 January (08).

LATEST: BRITNEY SPEARS threatened to commit suicide in front of her two children during her three-hour stand-off with emergency services at her Beverly Hills, California, mansion, it has been revealed.
The troubled pop star dramatically refused to hand over her sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline following a scheduled visit on Thursday night (03Jan08), when she reportedly locked herself and one-year-old Jayden James in a bathroom. Her court-appointed monitor called 911 after witnessing Spears’ apparent mental breakdown.
During the deadlock, Spears sobbed hysterically and screamed at police to get out of her house - or face having her dead body on their hands.
One of the first emergency officers to have arrived on the scene told how Spears shouted, "Get out of here. Leave me and my babies alone. Get out or I’m going to kill myself. I’ll do it. I’ll do it." Spears then demanded to speak to Federline in person, but when her request was refused by his lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan, she again vowed to end her own life.
A source tells British newspaper the Sunday Mirror, "Britney told Kaplan she wanted to ’sort this out with Kevin face-to-face’. Kaplan said ‘no’ and she started raising her voice and pacing up and down. She told him: ‘Tell him to stop pushing me. Tell him to stop making me feel like I’m not part of my own family. He doesn’t want to have to tell his children he killed their mother.’" According to various U.K. tabloid reports, Federline added to the panic when he remembered Spears kept two guns in the house - one of which was a present he gave to the star during their short-lived marriage.
And, in a last-ditch attempt to keep hold of her sons Jayden and Sean Preston, Spears phoned Federline and offered to pay the dancer $100 million (£50 million) in return for full custody of the boys, reports the News of the World.
Another insider adds, "Britney said that Kevin could have an incredible $100 million if he’d give her the kids and never see them again. He’s used to Britney going off on one, but he knew from her voice that this was a while other thing entirely. He hung up straight away and called his legal team in a panic.
"He told them that Britney was capable of anything and admitted that she still kept two handguns at the house… The lawyers called the police immediately." Spears was later admitted to Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for a mental evaluation, where she remained until Saturday afternoon (05Jan08), when she checked herself out to return home with her father Jamie.

U2 rocker BONO has designed a limited edition T-shirt which will be sold to benefit impoverished African farmers.
The singer has teamed up with the Hard Rock group to create the Bono Signature Series T-shirt which will be sold through the company’s various outlets, with proceeds going to the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Conservation Cotton Initiative - a scheme aiming to educate organic cotton farmers in Zambia about protecting local animals and plant life.
The T-shirts will also be sold through Edun, a socially conscious clothing company set up by Bono and his wife Ali Hewson in 2005.

LINDSAY LOHAN’s sexual exploits have hit the headlines again - one of her Italian lovers has revealed all about his passionate one-night-stand with the actress.
Alessandro diNunzio, an aspiring rocker, alleges to have recently spent a blissful night with the Mean Girls star in Italy, where she was honoured for her acting achievements at the Capri Film Festival.
The 27-year-old, who was working as a sound engineer at the festival, met Lohan at a bar, when she invited him to join her and her friends at their table. And he claims that encounter led to an amazing night of lust with the 21-year-old star.
He tells British newspaper the News of the World, "I couldn’t believe it when she asked if I could come to dinner… Then she invited me to a couple of clubs with her two friends. Despite her recent troubles she was downing alcohol vodka cranberry and vodka soda…" After kissing in the club, the star invited diNunzio up to her hotel room, where she stripped off and jumped into bed.
He recalls, "I was shocked she had made the first move… To be honest I felt a bit intimidated. But I took my clothes off and we started to make love… It was very passionate and intense and lasted for one-and-a-half hours, maybe more. Lindsay was very, very good and surprisingly experienced. She wanted to do everything, every position. She was extremely flexible and adventurous." But diNunzio was shocked and saddened to discover he was just one of Lohan’s three conquests while in the country: "I was hurt and sad when I found out about the other guys. DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER star TIM CHAPMAN has been arrested in Hawaii after allegedly performing a lewd act in his truck.
Chapman - who is not related to his reality TV co-star Duane ‘Dog’ Chapman was confronted by a security guard from a local shopping mall on Thursday night (03Jan08) when he was spotted naked in his vehicle.
According to reports, Chapman began to drive away after putting on some clothes, but lost control of the steering and veered into the sidewalk, almost running into the security guard.
Chapman turned himself into a Hawaiian police station five hours later - but claims he is completely innocent.
His attorney, Brook Hart, says, "It was simply a man who wet his pants with orange juice inadvertently and was changing them, doing nothing wrong at all and believing he had sufficient privacy to do it." Police are currently investigating the incident to decide whether or not to charge the 42-year-old.

Actor JACK BLACK is celebrating after learning his wife Tanya Haden is expecting for the second time.
The Holiday star, 38, confirmed the news on Saturday (05Jan08), but declined to reveal when the baby is due.
He tells People.com, "Yes, she’s expecting", before joking: "I’ve been told that two children is three times as hard as one child, but then strangely, three children is (sic) easier than one." Black and Haden are already parents to 18-month-old son, Samuel Jason.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD has been hailed as the Best Picture of the Year for 2007 by the National Society of Film Critics.
The movie, which was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, beat competition from Joel and Ethan Coen’s No Country for Old Men and Julian Schnabel’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly to take the award, while he beat the same filmmakers for the Best Director prize.
There Will Be Blood was also praised for Daniel Day Lewis’ portrayal of an oil-hungry businessman, winning him the honour for Best Actor. Best Actress went to Julie Christie for her starring role in Away From Her, while Best Supporting gongs were awarded to Casey Affleck for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and Cate Blanchett for I’m Not There.
Other winners included the Romanian 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days as Best Foreign-Language Film, while No End in Sight, by Charles Ferguson, won the award for Best Non-Fiction Film.
The National Society awards - voted for by America’s top movie critics - is a good indicator as to who will go on to Oscar glory.

THE STREETS frontman MIKE SKINNER closed his record label because he deemed the system old-fashioned.
The star co-owned The Beats label with hip-hop vocalist Ted Mayhem but the pair decided to close the company in December 2007 after they lost funding from the Warner Music Group.
Skinner even claimed to have held a funeral for the label, which had been home to acts including The Mitchell Brothers, Example and Professor Green.
But he insists they made the right decision.
He says, "It just comes down to the fact that the traditional record label is dead. The Beats represents me growing up. Spectating was more nerve-wracking than performing.
"What I’m doing now is looking for the thing you can create that embraces the next generation. I’m really into what you can do online and I’d rather be at the centre of it."

Rapper T.I. is to become a father for the fifth time - his longterm girlfriend Tameka ‘Tiny’ Cottle is pregnant.
Cottle, a former member of R&B group Xscape, announced she is to have a baby boy on her personal MySpace.com page earlier this week (ends04Jan08). The couple, who have been dating on and off for several years, already has a three-year-old son, King Harris, together, while the Bring ‘Em Out star - real name Clifford Harris Jr. - has three other children from previous relationships.
The news is sure to lift T.I.’s spirits - he is currently on house arrest after being caught allegedly attempting to purchase illegal weapons in October (07). He has continued to plead his innocence, and is due back in court next month (Feb08).

Teenage pop star JOE JONAS was hospitalised on Saturday (05Jan08) after hitting his head backstage at a concert in New Jersey.
The Jonas Brothers singer was messing around after a gig in Atlantic City when he "ran into a wall", according to celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.
He sustained a minor head injury, but was released from a local hospital shortly afterwards, having received a few stitches.
