GOLDEN COMPASS TOPS U.S. BOX OFFICE

Fantasy film THE GOLDEN COMPASS limped to the top of the U.S. box office chart, with disappointing opening weekend takings of $26.1 million (£13.05 million) The Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig-starring movie made just a fraction of the takings of previous December releases Lord Of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia - but enough to beat Enchanted to the top spot.
The Disney film took $10.7 million (£5.35 million) to claim second place; This Christmas took $5 million (£2.5 million) to land in third; Fred Claus was fourth with $4.7 million (£2.35 million); and Beowulf finished fifth with $4.4 million (£2.2 million).
