French ballet choreographer MAURICE BEJART has died. He was 80.
The former dancer passed away at a Swiss hospital on Thursday (22Nov07). He had been admitted to hospital on numerous occasions in recent months, citing exhaustion, kidney and heart problems on his previous visits.
Bejart rose to fame in 1959 with the production of Russian composer Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. He is also remembered for his work on Bolero and Souvenir of Leningrad.
Roxanne Aybek, a spokeswoman for his troupe Bejart Ballet Lausanne, confirms, "He died early this morning at Lausanne hospital." Bejart was working on new production Around the World in 80 Minutes prior to his death, and the show will premiere in Lausanne, Switzerland on 20 December (07).
Aybek adds, "We’re all upset, but the show will go on."
