COUNTRY STAR THOMPSON DEAD AT 82
LATEST: Country music icon HANK THOMPSON has lost his battle with lung cancer.
The 82-year-old honky-tonk singer was released from hospital and transferred to his home in Keller, Texas earlier this month (Nov07), after he was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer.
Thompson, who was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1989, died at his home on Tuesday (06Nov07).
The singer/songwriter’s career spanned more than six decades and he enjoyed more than 70 hits on the U.S. country chart, including Humpty Dumpty Heart and The Wild Side of Life.
He was also credited as the creator of the honky-tonk swing genre of country music.
Thompson also hosted his own radio and TV shows. His self-titled television breakthrough was one of the first American shows to air in colour.
He tasted his first musical success with Whoa Sailor, a song he wrote while serving in the U.S. Navy. Country legend Tex Ritter helped Thompson land a deal at Capitol Records, where he spent more than two decades releasing hit after hit.
Thompson was still touring up to his death - he was forced to cancel a series of concerts and announce his retirement after learning he was dying of lung cancer.
