Veteran country star HANK THOMPSON is battling inoperable lung cancer.
The 82-year-old has been released from hospital and transferred to his home in Fort Worth, Texas, where he remains under hospice care.
As a result of his illness, Thompson has called off the remainder of his U.S.
tour and has officially retired.
According to his spokesperson Tracy Pitcox, the singer, who was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1989, has been fighting lung cancer for some time.
Pitcox says, "We are hoping for the best."

Actress ANGELINA JOLIE was bashful after seeing herself in a simulated nude scene in forthcoming animated movie BEOWULF.
The Tomb Raider star - who plays a temptress killer lizard, painted gold and fitted with a tail - admits the motion capture technology was so shockingly real, she phoned her partner Brad Pitt to warn him about the nudity in the family movie.
She says, "I was really surprised that I felt that exposed. There are certain moments where I felt actually shy - and called home, just to explain that the fun movie that I had done that was digital animation was, in fact, a little different than we expected.
"I didn’t expect ourselves to come out as much. I didn’t expect it to feel as real, and so because of especially the type of character I play, it was kind of funny at first."

CHRISTINA AGUILERA has no regrets about her raunchy music video for hit single DIRRTY - because it made her feel "empowered".
The singer, who stripped down to a pair of leather chaps for the promo, insists she enjoyed expressing her inner self in the controversial video - and reveled in the controversy that accompanied its release.
She tells Glamour magazine, "I definitely stirred the pot a bit but I had fun.
"If it’s under the mark of respectability then it’s prudish, if it’s over the mark, it’s slutty. That’s really unfair, so I’m happy I’ve been able to express myself and be on both sides. People have loved it, hated it, been undecided, and been empowered by it." And the now-pregnant Aguilera has not ruled out donning the chaps at a later date.

Hollywood actress MERYL STREEP angered former ABBA member BENNY ANDERSSON while shooting the big-screen adaptation of MAMMA MIA! - because she did not know the words to his songs.
Streep, who stars alongside Pierce Brosnan in the film version of the hit musical, thought she could remember the lyrics to the 1970s hits perfectly until she realised the words were completely wrong.
She says, "The funny thing is, I didn’t even know I knew much about Abba before I met Benny Andersson and (bandmate) Bjorn Ulvaeus, but then when I thought about it, I realised that all of their music was stuck in my head without my knowing it, that I knew every word to every song.
"Except that I got most of them wrong, which caused a little tension with Benny, because he’s quite the perfectionist."

KATIE HOLMES’ family have hailed as the actress as "amazing" for taking part in the New York City Marathon.
Holmes completed the 26.2 mile (42.1 kilometer) race in five hours, 29 minutes and 58 seconds on Sunday (04Nov07) - and her loved ones couldn’t be happier for her.
Mum Kathy says, "Isn’t she amazing? She’s such a good girl. We’re so proud (of her)." And hours after crossing the finish line, the actress stepped out to accompany her husband Tom Cruise for the New York premiere of his new film, Lion For Lambs.

TV networks ABC and Univision have teamed up to produce a Spanish-language version of hit U.S. show DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.
The programme has begun filming in Argentina, with Latin stars Lucia Mendez, Scarlet Ortiz, Lorna Paz, Ana Serradilla, Gabriela Vergara and Julieta Rosen taking on the roles of their Wisteria Lane counterparts.
The production manager of ABC Latin America, Leonardo Aranguibel, says, "There is no doubt that this joint production between Univision and our company is going to have a significant impact on the U.S. Hispanic television audience." Otto Padron, vice president of programming for Univision, adds, "The worldwide success of Desperate Housewives is due in great part to the actors who give life to the fascinating characters. We’re confident that our viewers will really enjoy the new show."

Chatshow host LARRY KING has filed a lawsuit against his former insurance brokers, accusing them of conning him out of $15 million (£7.5 million) in personal life insurance policies.
King, who filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles’ U.S. District Court on 22 October (07), claims he was swindled out of the cash in an elaborate scheme by the Meltzer Group in 2004.
He has also named the head of the company, Alan Meltzer, in the suit, after being convinced to engage in a series of "highly complex life insurance transactions" which resulted in the buying and selling of policies worth a total value of $15 million.
In one instance, King purchased a $10 million (£5 million) policy, which he was instructed to sell immediately for $550,000 (£225,000) profit. The 73-year-old also claims he was told to sell a $5 million (£2.5 million) policy for just $850,000 (£425,000).
In the legal papers, King accused Meltzer of being driven by "greed" to steer him into deals which were against his financial interests, without considering the "likelihood of his future uninsurablility". He also claims the deals were organised to benefit Meltzer financially through commissions and bonuses.
King - who has not specified monetary damages - is suing Meltzer and his company for breach of fiduciary duty, reports website TheSmokingGun.com.

Rapper SHAWN ‘JAY-Z’ CARTER is taking over the airwaves - he’s turning DJ for hip-hop station Sirius Satellite Radio.
The 99 Problems star will play host on the station’s Hip-Hop Nation channel which will be suitably renamed Jay-Z Nation - for one week starting on Monday (05Nov07), when he will be playing some of his own tracks as well as those of his favourite rappers.
Chief executive of Sirius, Scott Greenstein, says, "Jay-Z is one of the pre-eminent creative forces in the music industry. Over the last decade, he has truly changed the face of hip-hop and music culture."

Rock legend RAY DAVIES was so traumatised after he was shot by a thief, he used the incident to inspire an upcoming album.
The Kinks icon, 63, was shot in the leg while chasing a man who had stolen his friend’s wallet in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 2004.
And the singer was determined to take positives out of the terrible experience.
He says, "I was on a drip, waiting and watching them (the medical staff) talking to an orderly. I started writing notes which I’ve still got on a hospital pad. I haven’t changed the words much and the song is basically the same as it was written at the time.
"Maybe I wouldn’t even have finished a record because I was on the verge of moving to New Orleans. If nothing had happened to me on that trip, I probably would have stayed there. That gunshot put me on a course."

R&B singer TREY SONGZ has been arrested in connection with a shooting in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The Can’t Help But Wait star - real name Tremaine Aldon Neverson - was among a group of men taken into custody on Sunday (04Nov07) following the incident in the parking lot of The Hippodrome, where Songz had performed the previous evening (03Nov07).
The shoot-out left one man injured and he was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The alleged gunman, 29-year-old Anthony Williams, has been charged on multiple counts, including assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm without a licence and assault with intent to murder.
Neverson, 22, was charged with behaving like a disorderly person and resisting arrest for his part in the crime, although it is unclear whether he is connected to either man. He was released after posting $500 (£250) bond.
According to Lieutenant John Slepchuck of the Springfield Police Department, cops were present when shots were fired behind the venue in the early hours of Sunday morning.
He tells AllHipHop.com, "Our disorderly person charge can involve several different things including the use of certain language, failure to do what an officer asks.
"(Neverson) was interfering with an active crime scene involving a victim."

Police investigating the murder of hip-hop icon JAM MASTER JAY have gotten one step closer to identifying the killer, after it emerged the alleged gunman had a distinctive tattoo on his neck.
The Run DMC DJ, real name Jason Mizell, was gunned down in his Queens, New York, studio in October 2002 - but his murder has gone unsolved due to lack of evidence.
Only one man has been named for his involvement in Mizell’s death - convicted drug dealer Ronald ‘Tinard’ Washington - but he has not been charged.
But now evidence given by witness Randy Allen, Mizell’s longtime business partner, has been made public for the first time - revealing details about the killer and how the gunman embraced the producer before shooting him in the head at point-blank range.
In the witness account, Allen recalls, "Jay looked up at the guy to say what’s up. And the next thing you know, a shot goes off." In an interview to the New York Daily News, he adds, "My buddy’s lying there, bleeding from his head. I’m looking at Jay and my head is gone. All I know is he’s not moving. And all I could think about was who the f**k had just left." Cops hope the newly-released information will help to prompt people’s memory in an attempt to identify the killer.

British singer AMY WINEHOUSE is so pleased with her recent collaboration with music producer MARK RONSON, she does not trust anyone else to produce her next album.
Winehouse - who teamed up with Ronson for a cover version of The Zutons hit track Valerie - is keen for the DJ to produce her next LP.
And Ronson, 32, reveals it will be nothing like her Back to Black album and will opt for a new sound.
He says, "As soon as I finish up the Daniel Merriweather record, I am going back into the studio with Amy Winehouse to work on her new record. She is actually dying to go back into the studio already.
"We can’t do the same thing again, it can’t be like a Sixties element or Motown. If anything, I’d really like to make it sound older or more morbid."

CASEY AFFLECK was left red faced after a confrontation with MORGAN FREEMAN on the set of their latest film GONE BABY GONE - because he turned up late for work.
Affleck claims the incident occurred following a timing miscalculation, when Freeman was brought on set earlier than required - and was forced to wait in his trailer for the younger star to show up.
He tells chatshow host Larry King, "Morgan was fantastic. He is Morgan Freeman. The first day he came to work, everyone is a little on edge because Morgan was coming and it was a big week.
"And I guess they brought in Morgan a little bit early. You know, they thought he might need a hair cut or something.
"But Morgan didn’t need a haircut. So he was sitting in his trailer for half an hour, waiting for everyone else to show up. And so when I got there, Morgan had been told that he was waiting there because I was late.
"No one wanted to admit that they had brought him in early. So I went up to Morgan’s trailer, and knocked on the door. And I thought, I’m going to introduce myself to Morgan Freeman. And he came out and gave me a lecture for 15 minutes about being late and being professional. And so I had live with that."

Pregnant HALLE BERRY has angered diabetes experts, after claiming she had succeeded in downgrading the severity of her disease with a healthy diet.
The actress was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes early on in her Hollywood career, but recently (Oct07) alleged that she has reclassified herself as a Type 2 diabetic simply through good living.
But medical experts are enraged with her claims and have accused her of "confusing" fellow diabetics with her comments.
A diabetes specialist tells PerezHilton.com, "If you come off insulin, then you were always a Type 2. She is feeding into all the confusion in the world." People diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes cannot reverse their condition because their pancreas is destroyed, whereas Type 2 sufferers still internally produce some insulin.
