WINFREY ‘HAPPY’ CHILD ABUSE SCANDAL HAS HIT HEADLINES WORLDWIDE

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 11:42 pm

LATEST: OPRAH WINFREY is glad the allegations of child abuse at her all-girls academy in South Africa have garnered the attention of the world’s media, because it allows her to correct the school’s faults before they get even worse.
The media mogul visited the Henley-On-Klip Leadership Academy, which she co-founded in 2006, last month (Oct07), after hearing reports a matron at the boarding school had molested a pupil. A total of 15 victims have since come forward.
Former employee Virginia Mokgobo, 27, was arrested on Thursday (29Oct07) on numerous charges, including assault, indecent assault and soliciting underage girls to perform indecent acts, after a local newspaper article brought attention to the matter. Mokgobo has been bailed pending further investigation.
But Winfrey believes it is not the school that is to blame - it is the "systems" in place in the academy which led to the situation.
She says, "I’m happy for it to get the attention (it has); it is my goal in life to put abusers - whether it be in the home, the academy, at work - where they belong, which is behind bars. The attention is justified.
"I don’t think we’ve failed the girls as a school, because there are many people at the school who are caring, dedicated and want the best for all the girls.
"The systems in the school failed the girls. Once you remove the systems and put in a new leadership, all that will change.
"No one is ever happy to have this kind of scandal or crisis, but I am happy it happened now and not one, two years from now, because we can now move to correct it. And as I’ve said to the girls, it is an opportunity to clean house."

GARRETT PITIES SPEARS & LOHAN’S PLIGHT

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 11:42 pm

Former child star LEIF GARRETT sympathises with troubled stars BRITNEY SPEARS and LINDSAY LOHAN, insisting young celebrities are bound to make mistakes when they’re in the public eye so much.
Singer/actor Garrett, who has famously battled drug addiction as an adult, hopes the Hollywood starlets can sort out their problems before it’s too late.
The now-clean 45-year-old says, "It’s really tough, what Britney’s going through right now, and Lindsay. When you’ve got the media in your face the whole time it’s kind of tough.
"We’re all human… you make mistakes, and that’s what happens. It’s just not being publicised." Garrett checked into rehab last year (06) after police found him in possession of heroin in what was the latest of a string of drug-related arrests. After quitting the treatment centre, he was sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years probation in May 2006, but was credited with the time already served in police custody.

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 11:33 pm

Former LAW & ORDER star FRED THOMPSON’s bid to become the next U.S. President have been dealt a huge blow - one of his advisors has a drug record.
Newspaper The Washington Post has discovered Philip Martin, the man the Republican politician hired to help front his fundraising campaign, has a criminal record for dealing drugs.
Thompson has been using businessman Martin’s private jet as his leading mode of transport on his political campaign.
The Post has unearthed details of a drug bust in 1979, which led to Martin pleading guilty to selling marijuana.
Thompson’s communications director, Todd Harris, insists the presidential hopeful didn’t know anything about Martin’s criminal past.
Harris says, "There’s not a campaign in the world that has the ability to research every one of its supporters going back more than 20 years."

EVANS GOES PUBLIC WITH 1973 AC/DC SPLIT

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 11:30 pm

Original AC/DC frontman DAVE EVANS was kicked out of the band because he was too popular with female fans.
Evans has opened up to website Blasting-Zone.com, exploding myths surrounding his departure from the Thunderstruck hitmakers in 1973.
History suggests Young brothers Malcolm and Angus kicked Evans out of the band because he was too much of a glam rocker, but the frontman, who was replaced by Bon Scott, has another tale to tell.
He explains, "Some guys get jealous if you’re getting too many girls, and the other guys are missing out. I didn’t really pay too much attention to it, but is just started getting worse and worse until the end where I was virtually going out without them (bandmates)." But Evans claims things came to a head when he fought with the group’s manager over his finances.
He adds, "We were worried where all the money was going to. We were doing top gigs… We’d had a top five hit and we were scraping together money. So we were all a bit worried about what was happening.
"I’m sure if the manager had explained to us where all the money was going, it would have been OK, but we didn’t know what was going on and it came to a head one time. I learned very quickly that you don’t go beating up your manager. That was the end of it, really."

MYSTERY ILLNESS FORCES DECEMBERISTS TO CANCEL DATES

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 11:27 pm

Cult rockers THE DECEMBERISTS have scrapped the remaining dates on their U.S.
tour to allow an unnamed band member to recover from a serious illness.
All 28 shows in cities like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego have been axed.
A band statement released on Monday (05Nov07) reads, "One of our band members has been ill for a while but we thought all would be well in time for these tour dates.
"After a couple shows, though, it has become clear that the illness is much worse than we had initially realised. We need to return home so our friend can mend.
"It saddens us to disappoint our fans. We hope everybody understands it is only because of an extreme situation that we had to cancel a tour we’ve all been excited about doing since the idea was originally hatched." The group and staff at The Decemberists’ record label refused to name the ill band member or release more information about the ailment.
