STARS’ SEASIDE RETREATS THREATENED BY MALIBU WILDFIRE

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:26 pm

Seaside celebrity enclave Malibu Colony in California has been ravaged by a fast-paced wildfire, which broke out early on Sunday morning (21Oct07).
The blaze has already claimed an animal hospital and landmark buildings Hodge Castle, which was reportedly once owned by Bob Dylan, and Malibu Presbyterian Church.
Locals are mourning the loss of socialite Lilly Lawrence’s castle home because it included a private museum featuring letters from Grace Kelly, Princess Diana and six U.S. presidents.
More than 500 firefighters are battling the blaze as WENN goes to press, but Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Sam Padilla admits the fire is far from under control.
Residents of Malibu Colony were evacuated to nearby Zuma Beach as the wildfire threatened their homes.
Built in the 1930s, the cluster of luxury homes that is Malibu Colony has been a favourite of celebrities over the years.
Linda Ronstadt, Larry Hagman, Jeff Bridges, Mel Brooks, Sting and Bill Murray are among the stars who reportedly own and rent homes in Malibu Colony.
In January (07), a smaller fire hit near the Colony area, and claimed the oceanfront home of actress Suzanne Somers.
Malibu fires in November, 1993 destroyed Sean Penn and Ali MacGraw’s homes, and came close to claiming estates owned by Mel Gibson and Richard Gere.
Students at nearby Pepperdine University have also been evacuated from their rooms to a campus cafeteria.
The wildfire is expected to blaze throughout Sunday and Monday as hot weather and heavy Santa Ana winds marked the height of traditional wildfire season after one of the driest rain years in Southern California on record.
Arson experts have already started to investigate the cause of the fire.

BRITNEY OFFERED PERSONAL APOLOGY TO HIT AND RUN VICTIM

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 4:38 pm

BRITNEY SPEARS has offered a personal apology - as well as financial compensation - to the owner of the car she hit.
The troubled pop star offered to visit Kim Robard-Rifkin’s house to make a personal apology after her alleged hit-and-run on August 6 (07).
But Ms Robard-Rifkin, whose 1999 Mercedes-Benz station wagon was damaged in the incident, said that a personal apology was not necessary as she was content with an offer to have her car repaired with a rental car provided in the meantime, as well as a telephone apology from Spears’s attorney.
She says, "(Spears) has way more than enough problems right now." Lawyer J Michael Flanagan has confirmed a cheque "in the $1,000 (£500) range" was to be delivered to Robard-Rifkin on Monday (22Oct07).
Two misdemeanour criminal charges of hit and run causing property damage and driving without a valid California driver’s license against Spears still stand.
But when the court sees proof of Robard-Rifkin’s compensation, the hit-and-run charge is likely to be dropped.

CENSORS SLAMMED FOR RELEASE OF EASTERN PROMISES

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 4:32 pm

British censors have been criticised over their decision to allow violent film EASTERN PROMISES starring NAOMI WATTS and VIGGO MORTENSEN to be screened uncut.
The David Cronenberg film centres on the Russian mafia in London, and includes shocking scenes including one in which a knife is twisted into a man’s eye and two victims have their throats cut in graphic detail.
The scenes were so gruesome that members of the audience at the premiere last Wednesday (17Oct07) at the London Film Festival gasped and turned away from the screen.
Now the decision by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to award the film an 18 certificate without any cuts has come under fire from former censors.
Andreas Whittam, former president of the BBFC, says, "If I thought this was the type of film that was likely to make people leave the cinema, or even make them have to look away for quite a while, then I would question why the scene should be left in." But the BBFC stood by the decision, a spokesman adds, "Scenes that make people turn away are part of the fun of going to movies. These days we are not here to cut; we are here to provide information and let people then make up their minds."

OLDFIELD QUITS BRITAIN OVER SMOKING BAN

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 4:26 pm

Musician MIKE OLDFIELD has quit Britain - because he hates the country’s smoking ban.
The Tubular Bells composer is selling his $7 million (£3.5 million) Gloucestershire, England, mansion to prepare for a move to Spain, as he insists life in the U.K. has become "intolerable" following the ban on smoking in public places, which came into effect on 1 July (07).
He says, "I went to a very strict prep school. You were so restricted. It was one of the worst times in my life. Britain has been getting more and more like that, what with this health-and-safety business.
"It is too intrusive. Imagine if Winston Churchill was given a £50 fine for smoking his cigar. He would never have stood for it. I don’t want to live in a country where a little old lady has to wear a hard hat and a luminous vest just to look after the village green. It’s ludicrous.
"It seems we have lost our freedom."

PAVAROTTI DIED ‘OWING MILLIONS’

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 4:26 pm

Opera legend LUCIANO PAVAROTTI died owing more than $24 million (£12 million) in debt, according to reports.
The Italian tenor is reported to have had an overdraft of more than $14 million (£7 million) and owed more than $10 million (£5 million) in mortgage payments at the Monte dei Paschi di Siena bank in Bologna, Italy.
Pavarotti was believed to have left a personal fortune of more than $400 million (£200 million) - but his personal fortune is believed to be much less.
It is thought the finances of Pavarotti’s estate could put an end to the rift between his second wife Nicoletta Mantovani and his three daughters who reportedly fell out over claims on his will.
Italian newspaper La Republica reported earlier this week (ends21Oct07), "There was no fortune of £200 million and so there will be no family squabbles." Pavarotti lost his battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 71 on 6 September (07).
