THOMPSON’S U.S. PRESIDENTIAL HOPES RIDICULED
Veteran Hollywood actor FRED THOMPSON’s hopes of contending in 2008’s U.S.
presidential election have been dashed after his campaign was savaged by critics.
The former Tennessee senator and ex-Law & Order star - who was recently announced as a Republican candidate - has come under fire for recently evading five crucial debates, opting instead to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
Thompson, 65, finally met with fellow Republican candidates earlier this week (09Oct07) for a televised debate that one critic likened to Britney Spears’ recent MTV Video Music Awards performance debacle, while right-wing columnist George Will has described the actor’s presence in the political ring as, "More belly-flop than swan dive." Thompson had previously been regarded as the most plausible threat so far to Rudy Giulianai, who was the frontrunner for the Republican nomination.
