PRODUCER & OPERA STAR VON DASSANOWSKY DEAD AT 83
Austrian-born film producer and opera singer ELFI VON DASSANOWSKY has died three months after having her leg amputated to stop an infection.
The 83-year-old suffered an embolism while holidaying in Kona, Hawaii in July (07) and had to be flown to Queen’s Hospital in Honolulu, where the surgery took place.
Von Dassanowsky became a major independent filmmaker when she moved from Germany to Hollywood and worked with movie mogul Otto Preminger.
She has been named a Living Legacy by the Women’s International Center and has received the UNESCO Mozart Medal and the French Chevalier Of The Order Of The Arts And Letters.
She has been hailed a "renaissance woman" and a "film pioneer", and the Cambridge Biographical Encyclopedia refers to her as a "leading figure in post-war European culture".
Von Dassanowsky died in Los Angeles on 2 October (07) of heart failure.
