The prince visited Northumberland’s Alnwick Garden - the only public plot in Britain licensed by the government to grow the Class C drug - on Saturday (22.09.07).
He was invited to inaugurate the second phase of the £35 million horticultural development and given a guided tour by the Duchess of Northumberland, who helped establish the project.
During his trip, the prince toured the Poison Garden section where dangerous and illegal plants, such as cannabis and coca leaves, used to make cocaine, are grown.
Charles made a joke about who wore the trousers in his relationship with wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, while he was being show round the garden by 18-year-old Aaron Oliver.
Aaron said: ‘I explained to him that rosemary in a garden means that the woman is in charge of the household. Prince Charles replied, ‘I’ve got lots of it in my garden!’ ‘The prince also knew a lot about the potent strain of cannabis, skunk, and seemed very aware of drug issues.’ The prince has always had an interest in plants and gardening in general, and once revealed he loves talking to his green friends.
He said: ‘I just come and talk to the plants, really- it’s very important to talk to them, they respond I find.’
