ESTRADA JAILED FOR LIFE
Former actor JOSEPH ESTRADA has been jailed for life, after he was found guilty of corruption following a six-year trial.
The ex-president of the Phillippines was found guilty on Wednesday (12Sep07) of receiving huge amounts of money from illegal gambling and taking a cut of profits from selling shares to government pension funds during his three years in office in 1998.
The 70-year-old, who had always maintained his innocence, was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to turn over his mansion and more than $15.2 million (£7.6 million) which he had held in two separate bank accounts.
However, the Deadly Brothers star was cleared on charges of perjury in relation to the reported misrepresentation of earned income. His son Jinggoy, was also found not guilty of corruption.
Estrada, who was ousted from office after a military coup in 2001, is expected to appeal the verdict.
