American star GEORGE CLOONEY has accepted a prestigious French award, marking his achievements in cinema.
The Hollywood heart-throb was presented with the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres medal by French Culture Minister Christine Albanel at a ceremony in Paris over the weekend (1-2Sep07).
Speaking at the event - part of the Deauville American Film Festival Albanel recognised Clooney as the "quintessence of an American actor," noting his "limitless talent" and "irresistible charm."

TOM CRUISE has paid tribute to late German acting star ULRICH MUEHE at a Berlin ceremony to commemorate his life.
The Hollywood star - currently filming his new movie Valkyrie in Germany was accompanied at the event on Sunday (2Sep07) by filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who directed Muehe in the Oscar winning movie The Lives Of Others.
It took place at the capital’s Schaubuehne theatre.
Muehe died of cancer on the 22 July (07). He was 54 years old.

STAR TREK star LEONARD NIMOY has been teaching protege ZACHARY QUINTO how to play his legendary character MR SPOCK, for the next installment of the sci-fi series.
The actors will play the Vulcan at different ages in Star Trek 8, due for release next year - and Heroes actor Quinto is determined to draw from Nimoy’s decades of experience in the role.

British director KEN LOACH has used the Venice Film Festival to campaign for better rights for immigrant workers in the U.K.
Loach is premiering his new movie It’s a Free World at the event. It focuses on a woman who sets up an illegal employment agency in London for immigrant workers.
The director claims the issue is very real, telling an audience at the festival, "We’ve allowed the working infrastructure of our country to disintegrate. Workers in our factories and supermarkets, in the agriculture and manufacturing industries, have no protection and no voice.
"We now have to think about (it) every time we shop in the supermarket for a packet of salad or strawberries, or whenever we employ a builder.
"Both sides are losing out - Britain has an unmonitored workforce while other countries are losing people in the prime of their working life who are taking their talents out of their home nations."

Illness has forced Costa Rican singer CHAVELA VARGAS to cancel a Mexico appearance, where she was scheduled to receive a career honour.
The Paloma Negra star, 88, was set to be honoured at the XIV Encuentro Internacional del Mariachi festival in Guadalajara on 30 August (07).
Her representative says, "Although her health has improved in the last few days, she has a medical problem and her doctors requires her to remain in complete rest."

Rock icon MARC BOLAN’s former girlfriend GLORIA JONES has hit out at claims the late star beat her during a drunken rage.
A former friend of the T-Rex star makes the claim in a new British TV documentary, which is due to be aired next week (08Sep07).
But singer Jones, the mother of Bolan’s son Rolan, has only positive memories of their time together.
She says, "Who are these people to know anything? Were they in our house? Were they in our bed? No. We had privacy.

The Spice Girl’s security team were alerted after they heard suspicious rustling in the bushes of the Beverly Hills mansion.
Her bodyguards attempted to catch the intruder but the trespasser managed to evade them.
The Spice Girl was in the mansion on her own, after husband David had taken their three sons, Brooklyn, eight, Romeo, five, and two-year-old Cruz to watch his soccer team, the Los Angeles Galaxy play.
A spokesman for Victoria said: "There was a man in the bushes. Security didn’t catch him but he has been tracked down since. I am not sure if any action will be taken, but the house is secure and he didn’t get close to the family." Last month, the couple endured a separate scare after a female fan managed to get past David’s security cordon and reach his hotel room.
Although she didn’t get into his room, it left the couple worried about their safety.
A source said: ‘It was like something out of a stalker film. She was using her feminine wiles but everyone was worried about the intense look in her eyes.
"It’s still not clear if this was an attempt by the girl to have a romantic liaison with David or whether she actually wanted to do him some harm."

If he is inducted, Ringo will join ex-bandmates John Lennon, Sir Paul McCartney and George Harrison who have all been individually honoured as well as collectively.
A source said: "Ringo’s work as a solo artist has never been taken as seriously as the other ex-Beatles but he’s actually enjoyed a lot of success in his own right, particularly in America. It’s hard to imagine, but there was even a point in the 70s when his records were briefly outselling those of John, George and Paul." An album of Ringo’s greatest hits as a solo artist, entitled ‘The Very Best of Ringo Starr’, was released last week.
The 67-year-old musician continues to perform live with his All Starr Band and his other group, The Roundheads.
The source added: "Having your own place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is generally considered to be one of the biggest honours a musician can have. Ringo is now among the favourites to be inducted next year." The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a museum in Cleveland, Ohio, which celebrates the achievements of artists who have had a major influence on the music industry.
A handful of artists have been inducted into the Hall in a special New York ceremony every year since it was created in 1986.
Inductees include Elvis Presley, Prince, U2, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.
