Britain’s Queen Elizabeth was pictured in fits of laughter at Scotland’s annual Highland Games on Saturday (01.09.07).
The queen appeared close to hysterics as she and husband Prince Philip joined 17,000 spectators at The Braemar Gathering in Royal Deeside to watch traditional Scottish events such as tossing the caber and throwing the hammer.
The competition, held at The Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park, also featured Highland dancing and a performance from the Inverurie Pipe Band.
The queen awarded the winner’s trophy - presented to the competitor who gains the most points across all five events - to Bruce Aitken, who won the competition’s top honour for an amazing ninth year in a row.
This year the queen and Philip were the only royal representatives at the event. Last year they were joined by Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.
The Braemar Gathering, of which the queen is patron, coincides with her and Philip’s annual break at their Scottish residence, Balmoral.
On Friday (31.08.07), the royal couple joined 500 guests at London’s Guards Chapel in for a memorial service to the 10th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death.
The Braemar Gathering was cancelled in 1997 as a mark of respect following Diana’s death in a Paris car crash.
