SPECTOR JURORS CAN ONLY CONSIDER SECOND-DEGREE MURDER CHARGE
LATEST: Jurors in the PHIL SPECTOR murder trial can only consider whether the music producer is guilty of second-degree murder or not.
Judge Larry Paul Fidler also considered whether the jury could ponder over voluntary or involuntary manslaughter charges, instead of murder, but decided against it.
The Los Angeles Superior Court judge told lawyers on Wednesday (29Aug07), "I don’t see it." He added, "The only verdict from they (the jurors) will get is second-degree murder." Attorneys for both sides agreed that the legal definitions of the lesser manslaughter crimes don’t fit the Spector case.
Final arguments will be presented next week (05-06Sep07) and jury deliberations are expected to begin on 7 September (07).
Spector is accused of the fatal shooting of Clarkson at his Alhambra, California mansion in 2003. He has pleaded not guilty.
