The royal couple have posed for pictures at the Oslo mansion to reveal the loving restoration they have made to the property, which took six years and cost over £15 million.
Photographs released of the villa - which dates back to 1733 and was the late King Olav’s favourite residence – show the interior has been decorated in a modest but contemporary style, with impressive chandeliers, oil paintings, antique furniture and even some modern art.
Hello magazine described the décor as “restrained by regal standards, with the main impression being of simple Nordic style with wooden floors and comfy textiles.” Several modern art works on display in the bathroom reflect the 70-year-old queen’s interest in art and design. The villa - located on Oslo’s Bygdoy peninsula – is one of several the king and queen have been restoring.
The largest and most expensive project is the Royal Palace in Oslo.
The renovation of the place caused some controversy in Norway after the cost reportedly exceeded a staggering £42.5 million.
The royals have also spent money restoring the official residence of Crown Prince Haakon and his family at Skaugum in Asker.
