The service – to mark the tenth anniversary of Diana’s death in a 1997 Paris car crash – has been organised by her sons, Princes William and Harry, and will see 500 guests gather at Guards’ Chapel in London’s Wellington Barracks.
Those expected to attend include Diana’s brother Earl Spencer and her sister Lady Sarah McCorquodale, as well as Prime Minister Gordon Brown and former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Other guests include Sir Cliff Richard, Lord Attenborough, celebrity photographer Mario Testino, and Sir Elton John, who sang a specially adapted version of his hit ‘Candle In The Wind’ at her funeral.
Prince Charles’ second wife, Camilla, The Duchess of York, has confirmed she will not be attending.
The duchess – who was famously described by Diana as the “third person” in her marriage to Charles - had originally planned to go after William, 25, and Harry, 22, invited her, but reportedly changed her mind on the advice of Queen Elizabeth.
In a statement, she said: ‘I’m very touched to have been invited by Prince William and Prince Harry. I accepted and wanted to support them.
‘However, on reflection I believe my attendance could divert attention from the purpose of the occasion which is to focus on the life and service of Diana.’ It is believed Camilla’s decision was also influenced by a public backlash against her going, with many believing her affair with Charles during his marriage to Diana meant her attendance would be deeply inappropriate.
