Britain’s Princess Diana would have been saddened by the controversy surrounding her memorial service, friends have claimed.
On Friday (31.08.07), it will be 10 years since the princess was tragically killed in a Paris car crash and her two sons, Princes William and Harry, have organised a service to celebrate her life.
However, there has been a huge amount of controversy after it was revealed Diana’s ex-husband Prince Charles’ new wife, Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall, had been invited.
Camilla, who Diana blamed for the breakdown of her marriage to Charles, has now decided not to attend because she fears her presence would be a distraction – news which has threatened to overshadow the actual event.
A close friend of Diana’s told Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper said: “It is just so sad that all of this has overshadowed what should have been a happy occasion to celebrate the life and many good works of Diana. I think Diana would also have been very sad.
“Diana loved her boys and would have been sad for them that this has cast a shadow over what they were trying to do. I am sorry but this should have been resolved months ago not five days before.” Vivien Parry, one of the original trustees of the Diana memorial committee, also believes the service should have been held six months after her death.
She said: “Instead, Diana has been left like an open wound, which has never been allowed to heal, and that is the fault of the very people who so wanted the closure.” About 500 guests are set to attend the service at the Guards’ Chapel near Buckingham Palace.
