LATEST: NICOLE RICHIE was "pleasantly surprised" to be released from prison after just 82 minutes of her four-day jail sentence.
The pregnant socialite - who was jailed for a second DUI conviction - was booked, released and sent home in an 80-minute spell at the Century Regional Facility in Lynwood, California on Thursday (23Aug07).
Richie’s attorney Shawn Chapman Holley claims the star was surprised by her early release and was prepared to serve a four-day sentence.
He tells People.com, "Nicole was aware that most people with sentences similar to hers are booked and released in a matter of hours and she was hoping to be treated like everyone else. "Nevertheless, she was prepared to serve her entire four-day sentence had the Sheriff’s Department required her to do so." Richie was arrested on 11 December (06) when she found driving her Mercedes Benz the wrong way down California State Route 134 highway in Burbank, California.
Richie was charged with a misdemeanour DUI on 27 July (07) and was sentenced to 36 months of summary probation. If she violates probation, she will have to serve one year in jail.

BRITNEY SPEARS is being investigated by an animal charity after her dog was recently seen wearing a cast.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) arrived at Britney’s Los Angeles home on Saturday (25Aug07) to ensure the animal is receiving adequate medical attention.
It was reported the singer’s new pet terrier, London, suffered a broken leg after her young sons Jayden James and Sean Preston reportedly injured the dog.
Madeline Bernstein, President of SPCA, tells TMZ.com, "We have received various sources of complaints throughout the day. Some said that Britney’s Yorkie dog was injured and had a cast on and some said the dog had a broken leg and was not treated. "After the calls started pouring in, we did go to Britney’s house but were just able to leave a note with the housekeeper. The matter is not if the dog had an accident, but if the dog is getting proper care."

ALICIA KEYS is stunned her teenage romance has made national headlines in America after actress pal CLARE DANES revealed the pair dated the same guy on TV.
Danes told MTV she and Keys had both romanced Billy Cherry in high school, and revealed the Fallin’ singer is still in touch with her childhood sweetheart.

Reality TV star BRODY JENNER is sporting a hand cast after "snapping" his finger during a game of football.
The socialite Princes of Malibu star had surgery on his finger, and now admits he’s determined to take better care of himself - because he can’t stand the pain.
He tells WENN, "It’s so painful. I’m just trying to get better. I never really realized how important the tendons in your finger are. I snapped it and it retracted. I had surgery to pull it back up.
"It’s been the most nightmare experience of my life. Eight weeks and I can’t use my hand. I am just hating life.
"I almost think this happened for a reason - so I could appreciate my hands and everything in my body. When something like this happens, it really makes you stop taking your body for granted."

New Mexico state authorities have launched an investigation into the filming of a controversial new reality TV show, which offers kids the chance to create their own community without any adults.
Officials at the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office fear the families who took part in Kid Nation violated truancy laws and filmmakers broke state laws.
The much-hyped new show doesn’t air until 19 September (07), but it’s already caught up in a storm of controversy after family concern groups raised issues about the idea of young children being left to fend for themselves in a deserted town.
In reality show, which was filmed in remote Santa Fe, New Mexico a group of innocent kids attempt to create a society without adults.
The show’s `contestants’, aged from eight to 15, were cut off from their parents for 40 days.
Critics have slated the programme and network bosses at CBS after trailers showing the child stars crying and fighting among each other started airing earlier this month (Aug07).
And now the New Mexico authorities have reason to believe there are serious legal matters, surrounding the filming of the series, that need to be addressed.
Attorney General Office spokesman Phil Sisneros tells the Los Angeles Times newspaper that producers may have illegally refused to allow inspectors onto the film set for routine health and safety checks.
Sisneros also alleges that another official was not allowed on the set to inspect work permits.
CBS bosses claim the child stars of the show were not employees, and, therefore, didn’t require work permits.

Brazilian supermodel GISELE BUNDCHEN has cancelled the Sydney leg of an Australian promotional tour amid rumours her personal life is in turmoil.
The 27-year-old was scheduled to promote her Ipanema shoe line in the city but pulled out - a day after the birth of boyfriend Tom Brady’s first child with ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan.
A spokesperson for Ipanema says, "It’s very disappointing that she’s not coming but unfortunately we have to just work with her schedule, "I know Tom Brady will not be accompanying her but she will have some female support as her twin Patricia and other sister, Gabriela, will be travelling with her.
"We are hoping to bring her back to Sydney some time next year."

Hollywood director JOHN SINGLETON has killed a 57-year-old woman in a car crash in Los Angeles.
The Boyz in the Hood filmmaker was driving his SUV in the city on Thursday (23Aug07) when Constance Russell stepped in front of his car.
A spokesman for Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Singleton was neither speeding nor under the influence of drugs or alcohol and described the incident as "a very, very unfortunate accident." The spokesman added Singleton waited at the scene for police and an ambulance to arrive.

Rockers PARAMORE almost missed their set at England’s Reading Festival this weekend (25Aug07) after their flight from the U.S was cancelled.
The band - who were forced to pull out of the festival last year (06) because frontwoman Hayley Williams was sick - feared flight cancellations would put this year’s performance in jeopardy.
But they finally managed to board a flight to the U.K in time to perform at the festival.
Williams says, "We had to cancel last year because I was really sick and I think it’s time for another apology. But our flight got here today and now we’re all together".

The singer died four days after suffering a heart attack at his home in Oxfordshire, England, on 8 August.
Walker played a major role in the American music scene in the 60s, 70s and 80s and was best known as the lead singer with Bill Pinkney’s Original Drifters and The Coasters. Walker had returned to the U.K. this year (07) after being treated for heart problems in the U.S.

MORRISSEY is serving up a ticket deal to his most devoted fans in New York and Los Angeles - the chance to see all of his upcoming shows and sit in on rehearsals.
The former Smiths star, who was forced to scrap a series of concerts due to illness on his last U.S. tour, will play 10 nights at Los Angeles’ Palladium and five at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York as part of his autumn (07) tour, which begins in Tijuana, Mexico on 20 September (07).
And he’s offering superfans the chance to buy a ticket package, which will allow them access to every show.
The "season ticket" will offer fans a reduced price on tickets and entitle them to early access to the venue.

LATEST: Italian opera legend LUCIANO PAVAROTTI has been released from hospital following a two-week stay to undergo treatment for cancer.
The 71-year-old was admitted to the University Policlinico in northern Italy on 8 August (07) after suffering from a high fever.
But a hospital spokesperson, says "all diagnostic tests having been completed" and the famous tenor can return home "to convalesce in the serenity of his family surroundings." Pavarotti underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer last year (06) and has since had at least five rounds of chemotherapy

PRISON BREAK star LANE GARRISON has begun an enforced 90-day psychiatric evaluation behind bars.
The actor arrived at the California Institute for Men in Chino, California on Friday morning (24Aug07).
He will undergo a thorough evaluation there, so that the authorities can determine if he’s suitable for probation.
A hearing to decide if he’ll be sentenced to serve more jail time will be held on 31 October (07).
Garrison pleaded guilty to charges of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence, driving under the influence and providing alcohol to a minor earlier this month (Aug07).
In December 2006, Vahagn Setian was a passenger in Garrison’s Land Rover when the actor lost control of the vehicle and crashed after leaving a pre-Christmas party. The 17-year-old was later pronounced dead in hospital.
During a hearing at Los Angeles County Superior Court on 2 August (07), Judge Elden S. Fox ruled he needed to see the results of a "diagnostic" test on Garrison before deciding his sentence.
