Thailand’s Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will display her private pictures of India in a public photography exhibition.
The princess’ photographs detailing village life for the poor in India are being exhibited in Mumbai today (23.08.07) as part of ongoing celebrations to mark the 60 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and India.
The collection of pictures, titled ‘Bharata in Reflection’, were taken by the princess during her many visits to India since 1987.
This includes her trip in 2005, when the princess travelled to India to receive the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development.
The show features images including Sari-clad women going through their daily rituals in a village temple in Oeissa, a cow in a rural shelter, street dogs enjoying a nap in the sunshine and a series of smiling faces both young and old.
Jesada Chavarnbhark, Thailand’s consul-general in Mumbai, said: ‘She has an easy, down-to-earth image and is easy accessibility to the common man.
‘I was amazed to see how she ate food without any qualms offered by strangers off the road during her last visit to Gujarat and the Amul dairy. Her visits to Mysore, Kolkata, Sikkim and other places in India apart from Gujarat also find a reflection in these pictures.
‘They are very positive pictures and that’s why they got a very positive response in Delhi, where the exhibition was inaugurated by the princess on August 9.’ Chavarnbhark officially opened the week-long exhibition to be held at the Premchand Roychand Gallery. It will then travel to Kolkatta, formerly known as Calcutta, and Cehnnai, formerly Madras, in September.
