A thrilling prison

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:21 pm

A video posted on the internet featuring 1,600 Filipino prisoners dancing to Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ has become a worldwide hit.
The clip, which shows inmates from a prison on the Philippine island of Cebu wearing orange jump suits and dancing in unison, has attracted more than 1.9 million views on video-sharing website YouTube.
The prisoners also dance to Queen hit ‘Radio Gaga’ and the soundtrack to the movie ‘Sister Act’.
The dance routines happen twice a day after special security consultant Byron Garcia decided it was a great way to instil discipline in the prisoners.
He said: "I thought it would be easier to communicate with them using music.
"When they perfected the marching, we started the more difficult routines, even hiring a choreographer for them." Choreographer Vince Rosales said the ‘Thriller’ dance took a month to perfect.

Pigeon contraceptive

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:21 pm

Hollywood residents are combating their ever-expanding pigeon population by feeding them a birth-control drug.
The birds have descended on Tinseltown over the past few months and an estimated 5,000 now live in the area.
Residents are so fed-up with the dirty birds they are planning to use OvoControl P, a drug which interferes with egg development, to try and cut their numbers.
Laura Dodson, president of the Argyle Civic Association, the group leading the new campaign, said: "We think we’ve got a good solution to a bad situation. The numbers of pigeons have become unmanageable." The population growth has been partly blamed on a woman known locally as the ‘Bird Lady’ who has dumped large bags of pigeon feed in dozens of areas.

A double jackpot

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:21 pm

A British man scooped two shares of the jackpot after accidentally buying two lottery tickets with the same numbers.
Derek Ladner picked his regular numbers, 3, 9, 10, 13, 46, 47, when he bought his first ticket for the July 11 draw. However, he later forgot about this and bought another ticket with the same numbers.
When his numbers came up he claimed his £479,142 share of the £2,395,710 jackpot.
A week later he found his second identical ticket and claimed another £479,142.
If he had stuck at one ticket, the jackpot would have been shared by four winners, each taking £598,927.
But Derek’s extra ticket made it a five-way split and netted him almost £360,000 more.
A Camelot spokesman said: "This chap has doubled his money. It must have been a happy surprise."

Britain’s Driving and Vehicle Licensing Association (DVLA) have banned a list of controversial number plates before the new 57 registrations arrive.
The association was warned some of the number combinations could be interpreted as rude or offensive words, with the 57 being used to represent the letters S and T or S and Y.
The blocked registrations included: TE57 CLE (Testicle), EC57 ASY (Ecstasy), BA57 ARD (B*****d), MY57 ASH (My Stash), H057 AGE (hostage), HE57 ABS (stabs) and EA57 GAL (Easy Gal).
A DVLA spokesman said the offensive plates were banned "to avoid causing general offence or embarrassment".
However a spokesman for the Association of British Drivers said: "The DVLA should be setting their priorities on more worthwhile issues - like reviewing safety."

Sheep trial

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:21 pm

A Dutch man was cleared of having sex with a sheep because the animal could not testify.
The man - from Haaksbergen, near Utrecht - was reported to police by a farmer who caught him having intercourse with the four-legged animal.
But the case was thrown out of court because the sheep couldn’t take to the stand to testify it had not consented and had suffered emotional stress.
Bestiality is not illegal in the Netherlands unless it can be proven the animal did not want to take part.
Animal rights campaigner Jos van Huisen said: "Short of putting the sheep in the dock, at the moment these perverts cannot be prosecuted." Minister of Justice Ernst Hirsch Ballin has announced plans to change the law.

Phone fungus

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:21 pm

Austrian scientists have created a mobile phone with the facility to identify mushrooms.
The team of researchers from Hagenberg college created software which can tell the difference between poisonous funghi and edible mushrooms, in an effort to prevent people being poisoned by accident.
Dozens of people mistakenly eat poisonous mushrooms every year and several are even killed by it.
Now wild mushroom lovers just need to photograph the funghi on the phone so it can be compared with the systems database to determine whether it is edible.
The new software can identify 600 different funghi.

Bible bashing

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:21 pm

A scheme to give away free Bibles with newspapers in the US has sparked outrage.
The International Bible Society, Send the Light, wants to distribute custom-designed New Testaments with 11 newspapers, in an effort to spread the Christian message.
The Texas-based society plan to put the books in promotional packages on the front of papers, like other sample books or promotional CDs.
But news of the scheme has infuriated readers and has started a protest.
One Fort Worth Star-Telegram reader wrote: "Do you have any idea how blatantly offensive this boneheaded move is to the thinking public?" The society has put aside hundreds of thousands of dollars to distribute Bibles during 2007 and 2008.
Society Paul Tolleson said: "It’s disappointing that anyone would object to getting a Bible.
"Do they object to getting a bag of Quaker oatmeal or Tide detergent or an AOL disc?"

Ashes to art, dust to drawings

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:21 pm

A Canadian artist has launched a service drawing commemorative portraits of the dead using a pencil created from their ashes.
Lucas Seaward, from Alberta, uses about a tablespoon of your loved one’s ashes to make the pencil.
The 26-year-old artist has founded a company, Honor Industries, and plans to offer his service through funeral homes. He has also applied to patent the pencil-making process.
He said: "There are limited options for leaving a memorialised essence of an individual. I personally don’t think an urn does justice." Seaward’s portraits can take between 30 and 200 hours and prices start at 5,000 Canadian dollars, depending on the size and detail involved.
Seaward said: "There are only so many high-quality professional artists that can do the work that’s necessary. It definitely isn’t something we’ll be able to do on a 24-hour turn-around."

Rent-a-pet

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:21 pm

A pet rental service has been launched in the US.
FlexPetz allows its customer to enjoy spending time with its crew of dogs for a fee of $49, without the hassle of caring for them fulltime.
Founder Marlena Cervantes said: "Our members are responsible in that they realise full-time ownership is not an option for them and would be unfair to the dog.
"It prevents dogs from being adopted and then returned to the shelter by people who realise it wasn’t a good fit." FlexPetz hire out Afghan hounds, Labrador retrievers and Boston terriers.
Part-time owner Jenny Goddard said the service was perfect for her busy family, who rent a black Labrador named Jackpot.
She said: "It’s funny. He is so friendly and immediately playful with us, people are surprised he is a rental dog."

Puppy pilgrimage

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:21 pm

A dog in China swims 4km every day to feed her newborn puppies who are stranded on an island.
Huahua - a stray dog from Chongqing city - gave birth to four puppies on Shanhuba Island, but heavy rain means the road linking the small isle in the Yangtze River to the mainland has become inaccessible.
Twice a day Huahua swims 1.2 km to the island every day to nurse her babies before swimming another 1.1 km back to the city to feed herself.
The dog makes her pilgrimage once in the morning around 7am, and again at 7pm, when she spends the night with her puppies.
Two days ago, the water rose again, and the mother has moved her children to a higher point on the island.

Poo present

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:21 pm

Chinese researchers have started making souvenirs out of panda excrement.
The authorities at the Chengdu Centre select, smash, dry and sterilise the poo produced by 60 giant pandas a year before turning it into bookmarks, photo frames, fans and statues.
However the souvenirs are relatively odour-free.
Jing Shimin, who works at the base, said: "They don’t smell too bad because 70 per cent of the dung is just remains of the bamboo that the pandas are unable to digest.
"We used to spend at least 6,000 yuan a month to get rid of the droppings but now they can prove lucrative as half of them will be sold as souvenirs." There are now plans to create statues of pandas performing various athletic feats to be sold as ’special gifts’ at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:21 pm

A spokesman for the Titisee-Neustadt police department, Dieter Klipfel, said: "As they got closer to it, they realised it was a giant stuffed animal. It had been put there by a local archery club to use as a target."
